Something your town in known for:

There is a lot of Indian history my town. The Secatoues called the area Winnecomac which is Algonquin for "pleasant land". This wig wam is authentic in style and structure of those made by Native Americans that lived in this area of Long Island.

Nice pics everyone! I participated in the scavenger hunt in 2010, but have been unable to do the ones since then due to some major life events, but am planning on joining in on this one now that we're back from our long-awaited month-long RV trip out west & thus have a multitude of pics to cull from (as well as time now to go out & get more). :-)

Glasd to see you back pednurse!

I have a few more from yesterday

Love all the great pictures and creativity. Headed out to Palm Springs area for the weekend and taking the list with me. I plan on having a few more contributions.

The pictures I take are with a variety of different digital cameras. "my" camera is a canon T2i. I also use a Kodak 10x zoom, a Nikon AW100 and my droidx camera phone. The best pictures are the ones you actually take so I am not too picky about the camera ... As long as I get the shot. This scavenger hunt is perfect for me!

Nice pics everyone!

pednurse - Welcome back. Looking forward to seeing your pictures from the roadtrip. And I hope that the major life events were good experiences. :goodvibes

Twigs - I love that black and white lily pad shot of yours.

My least used lens in my bag is the macro lens and I posted one of these pics on the Canon thread. So, many thanks to dcg0317 for your tips on using the macro lens. I am determined to use it more!

We have trams in Melbourne - it really is Something This City is Known For.

This is the W-class tram; a rather Antiquated model. There are about a dozen of these trams left and they operate as a free tourist attraction around the boundary of the city.

0703ScavHuntMosaics026.jpg

This model is much more modern.

0702CityWalk004.jpg

Would you believe that the model name is Bumblebee?

0702CityWalk001.jpg

The trams can be used as mobile billboards and there are some that have advertising posted all over! I was walking around the city last week and noticed one of the trams advertising a winery. There were grapevines all over the tram! Sadly, I didn't have my camera handy at that time. Looks like I might be keeping an eye out for this particular tram but it might be a lost cause. :headache:

Something my City is Known For - Festivals and Events. I caught two events this week.

For the last 3 years, during the winter school holidays, the Werribee Open Range Zoo will open late at night. This is exactly like having Extra Magic Hours at Animal Kingdom. The WORZ hours are extended from 5.30 pm - 8.30 pm. They call these nights "Wild On".

0708WildOn003.jpg

We got there past 4 pm and missed the last safari run of the day. But there is a walking trail round.
What is it? These are some of the animals I could find around the walking trail.

The other event? Every Friday night in July, one of the precincts in the city runs fireworks as a means of drawing a crowd in.

I did go last Friday night but traffic was bad and I got there late, with barely enough time to set up the tripod and was horribly out of position.

So, I made the most of the situation and managed to salvage this category....Yacht, with Light Trail

Last night, I headed out again. Got there earlier this time.

OK, here are my first few entries. :) Starting with Dad. This is a pic of my Dad with the students we awarded the first scholarships that we set up in memory of my Mom, who passed away July 12, 2011, after a brief month-long bout of colon cancer. My Dad teaches at the same high school where my mom graduated from, and these are students from that school.

Irate: This crane was very irate at our being outside its enclosure at ICF. We were very glad to be on the other side of the fence as he came charging at us!

I'm a bit new to this, but I'll give it a shot. :)
Heading to WDW in just a few more days, and I'll see how many of these I can find there.

This gives me a good reason to really learn how to use the camera I bought several years ago, which rarely gets out of 'beginner mode'.

Something my City is known for - Festivals and Events.

This week's Event is the Open House scheme. For one weekend in the year, Melbourne opens some of the significant buildings around town to the public - for free. These buildings include offices with significant architectural design, historic buildings that might not be accessible to the general public or any building that might be of interest to Melbournians. The event has been in existence for the last 5 years and the buildings are "manned" purely by volunteers (I believe that there are over 800 volunteers for this weekend's event). For this year, there are about 100 buildings participating in the scheme.

Given the choice, I would happily spend both days from opening to close just meandering through the buildings; but happily and sadly, this weekend is one that is jammed packed with my life events and I only had this morning to dedicate to the event.

This is the South Melbourne Town Hall. We have any number of local councils in Melbourne and there are quite a lot of Town Halls around town. These buildings are effectively community hubs.

0728OpenHouse065.jpg

In times not so long ago, the Town Halls were places for community gatherings, dances, council meetings/protests and some even house libraries and local art galleries. Most are still in operation and are now offices where the local council works are run out of.

Near the Town Hall, this group of historic buildings were also opened. The Portable Iron Houses were pre-fabricated and transported from England in the late 1800's to Australia and reconstructed here. They are considered to be the first form of houses built here by White Settlers.
