A few more from me. You'll be "happy" to know that I paid for 6 of these shots by walking home at 4:30pm in the 95+ degree air with 110+ degree heat index...

As such, some thing(s) your city is known for...
In this case, it's humidity. The Gulf Coast in the summer is not the driest of spots in the US...
IMG_5431_small.jpg

This is also my strictly plagiarized submission for Lazy, Hazy ;).

Something else, a bit less annoying that we're known for is these trees with flowers. The crepe-myrtle trees are all over the place down here.
IMG_5438_small.jpg

Well, to be fair, we're not really known for them, but they're everywhere. They're pretty annoying too from what I hear, as they grow stupidly fast.

Moving on, we're also known for our storminess this time of year..
IMG_5412_small.jpg

This is not really the city, but more the region. It counts though since I already put something forth into this category! :p

This may also have been my attempt to catch lightning. Unfortunately, with no ND filter and it still being daylight (~5:30pm), it didn't work too well. And about 5 minutes after this, it was downpouring.

Moving on to 5 more new entries...
Illumination
IMG_5423_small.jpg

This may have been a test shot with my new lens (Sigma 30mm f/1.4), but it works for the category.

Light Trails
Not exactly what you may have had in mind ;)
IMG_5440_small.jpg

Tourist Map (or whatever the category is, I'm going off of shoddy memory here)
IMG_5447_small.jpg

Not the best, the reflection really hurts it, but unless I skip work and head down to 10 minutes (walking) from the office, I'm not likely going to get this at a different time..

Zig Zag
I had tried to get a similar shot to this on my first set of pictures, but there was a group of college kids sitting here drinking. Granted, there may have been another type of Zig Zag available there too...but I don't think these boards support that type of activity ;).
IMG_5450_small.jpg

And lastly...

Welcome to the South...

All but the thunderstorm pic above were taken with my new toy. I'm really liking it so far, and can't wait to use it for actual low-light stuff. You know, like Disney. In less than 2 months now! Woo!

Fabulous pictures, everyone! :goodvibes

I'm really enjoying the little views into your lives and part of the world. Thanks for sharing.

Something your City is Known For - Major Events and Festivals.
It's been an incredibly busy week for me this week, with not much time to get out and about. However, the week has been jammed fully of Major Events.....(and I'm stretching this category a little more than I've already done!)

The first Major Event celebrates my DS 12 birthday. Illumination

080112thBirthday012.jpg

The second Major Event was a DisMeet with Skier_Pete at my home. He's travelled all the way from upstate NY for an Australian holiday. We've been DisFriends-in-a-box for the last 2 years and it was finally nice to covert the friendship into a 3D one. We are good friends, close enough to make this picture Best Friends.

0802DisMeet012.jpg

The third Major Event was an off-site work love-in. Our setting was a little Hazy and Lazy

...and there is always a Fishy option

0803Workfunction118.jpg

We got this one option for dessert. Everyone looked at it, checked the menu and went What Is It? Creme Brulee it is NOT.

0803Workfunction131.jpg

Thankfully, the Chocolate Fondant was exactly as promised....

Decadent

0803Workfunction134.jpg

There was definitely traces of nuts during the night.

0803Workfunction034.jpg

The next morning, we all had to Rise and Shine fairly early for an all-day session.

0803Workfunction213.jpg

But food first!

0803Workfunction210.jpg

0803Workfunction212.jpg

Okay - I admit that these major events are all personal related. But I did say I was stretching this more than normal!

And my category stretch for the week? Well.....it really is only half an effort.

Lazy, not Hazy

The second pic is of trams going up the side of the mountain for viewing.

Lastly, the Old Man of the Mountain, a state symbol, is also viewed from this site.

Unfortunately, several years ago the rocks were broken and the "face" is no longer there.

Surging Spring, which is a hot spring along the West Thumb of Yellowstone Lake

What my city is known for. I live in Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love and the Cradle of Liberty. Picking something was difficult so I have quite a few pics.

Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. The Liberty Bell is actually the second bell cast. The first was made in 1751 but cracked when it was rung. The second bell was cast in 1753 from the metal of the first bell. It actually got its name from Abolitionists in the early 1800's trying to outlaw slavery. It developed a crack in 1846 and was repaired for a celebration of George Washingtons birthday. It was rung at this time and another crack developed. It has not been rung since then.

The courtroom in Independence hall. Independence Hall was originally the state house and trials were held here.
014.jpg

The Assembly room. Perhaps the most famous sight in Independence Hall. It was in this room that George Washington was appointed Commander in Chief of the Continental Army. The Declaration of Independence was adopted here by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, it was not written here. The US Constitution was drafted here in 1787.

where George Washington sat during the Constitutional Convention and The Rising Sun Chair. The sun was carved into the back of the chair and Benjamin Franklin would look at it often. He has said that the artists couldn't tell if it was a rising or setting sun. He would look at it behind the President and "...at length I have the happiness to know that it is a rising, and not a setting sun." He is thought to have felt that it showed a rising sun on the birth of a new nation.

Congress Hall - It was coinstructed as the Philadelphia County courthouse. From 1790 to 1800 it served as the meeting place for the US Congress. The House of Representatives met on the first floor and the US Senate met on the second floor. Philadelphia served as the nations capital during this time period.

Carpenters Hall - the First Continental Congress was held here. It is the home of the Carpenters Union, the oldest trade guild in America dating back to 1770

Betsy Ross House - Birthplace of the American Flag
305.jpg

Tun Tavern plaque - the Tun Tavern was the birthplace of the US Marines and where the first recruitment drive was held. The tavern no longer exists having burnt down in the 1780's and I-95 now goes through where the tavern existed
320.jpg

The Philadelphia Art Museum - a view from the steps that Rocky ran up and practically every visitor reenacts
087-1.jpg

And a statue of the triumphant Rocky. There was a lot of controversy over this statue. It was commissioned for one of the movies and left to the city. The Art Commission said it was not art but a movie prop. It was moved to the Spectrum. It then went back to the Art Museum, back to the Spectrum and finally found its final position near the art museum. It's on a grassy area just to the side of the famous steps.
090.jpg

Love Park - was conceived in the 1960's by Edmund Bacon, Kevin Bacon's father. It became an icon for the skateboarding community. If you look closely you can see the arft museum in the background.
098.jpg

The Delaware River - the river runs from NY down to the Delaware Bay. It is used for pleasure and commerce. This view is from the northeast Philadelphia area

Really enjoyed your tour of Philadelphia, tazdev! I totally remember being there when I was about 10. I would like to take my kids some day.

Thanks PeaNMe. I had a friend visiting who had never been here before. I even found a few things I had never seen. Philadelphia really is a great place to visit and live.

Tazdev - Thanks for sharing Philly. I've never been there and its been on my bucket list for a while now.

PedNurse - Great shot of the pet riding shotgun. :thumbsup2

I've had a busy week at work; so there probably won't be a weekly update from me this week. :flower3:

Loving everyone's pics.

Tazdev - Thanks for sharing Philly. I've never been there and its been on my bucket list for a while now.

Your very welcome. I hope you get a chance to visit one day. I'm always available for tours.

I miss home :( (originally from southern NH, transplanted to AL for work a few years ago...) and I instantly recognized the trails on the tram side of the resort (it's been ~20-25 years since I skied it though) having ridden through the Notch hundreds (or more) times traveling to see family up in the north woods.

Aww, I didn't know you were from NH, Cafeen! The area hasn't changed much!
