Photo Board Assignment: Summer Scavenger Hunt, June-September, 2012

I am going to try this again. Every time I have tried to add pictures my internet connection goes on the fritz. I also aplogize in advance if the pics are too big. I use photobucket and since they changed things around I can't figure out how to resize.

Black and White - this was taken at my DGD's dance recital. The one girl is the instructors daughter. I was actually very happy with how my pics came out this year
126.jpg

General Store - taken on the boardwalk in Wildwood NJ. Not a place I expected to find a general store
312.jpg

Grapevines - my mom grows her own grapes to make into jelly
179.jpg

and a close-up of the grapes
181.jpg

irate - she may not look it but my youngest DGD was quite mad that she couldn't go on one of the roller coaster rides. She's about 18 inches to short. I will have better ones when she finds out how many rides she can't go on in Disney
329.jpg

Ladybug and macro

plane pulling a banner
297.jpg

and a boat pulling a banner. I saw more boats than planes
254.jpg

roses - miniature ones that I bought my mom last year
177.jpg

splash - I couldn't decide so I have 3. My DGS was just officially diagnosed with Autism and this is the first year he has ever gone in the ocean. He has always run away from it.

299.jpg

What is it - we were looking out at the ocean and saw something breaking the surface. There was a great debate as to what it was and the answer was - a trashcan
296.jpg

My DGD found this at her softball game and she wanted me to take a pic of it. It is an Asian Multi-colored Lady Beetle. I googled
018.jpg

And as a non-counting bonus - several hunts ago there was a bird's nest in the categories. I could never find one. While at my swim club I found this.

Not the best pic because it was the cheap P&S I take to the pool but I found a birds nest. It may also be as close to a chickadee as I come since I have no idea where to even find one. Instead I give you a Swallowtail and babies.
010.jpg

Love it - an ice arena on the beach! And now I'm hungry from all those food pics too. I need those eggs benedict for breakfast this morning. Great photos everyone!

I've been quiet, but paying attention. I tend not to comment on pics individually and just appreciate them (and secretly get jealous of the shots, and the ability to just head out and go shooting...not having a car here in Mobile kinda sucks :(). So, a collective thumbs up to all since last time I posted.

And why am I posting this now? Because I finally got off my butt and walked home to shoot this evening. I even had the list in mind when I did it. I missed the Zig-Zag, as there was a group of college kids sitting on the boardwalk I wanted to shoot, but next time.

So, without further ado...
We'll start with some chilled noshery. It's not particularly decadent, but it's quite tasty. This also amounts to my dinner one night. I eat healthy, what can I say...
IMG_5273_small.jpg

(Yes, I put my mark on that...just in case someone want to snag it from the internet for no apparent reason....or, you know, it could just simply be my export setting for that size :p)

With that out of the way, we'll head on outside my office building for an Upside Down lizard.

We have quite a few of these guys hanging around. This one in particular is a baby (or, at least very tiny). I suppose this could fall into the macro category as well.
IMG_5283_small.jpg

While we're outside my building looking at lizards, this one was pretty irate. I had moved a little too closely to him and he wasn't happy about it. I think he remembered me from doing the same when he was on one of our tables outside earlier in the day. (And a few days later... maybe even a couple weeks, he was on top of a sign outside our building, and wasn't happy when I walked by. He really doesn't like me :()
IMG_5224_small.jpg

So, away from the lizards, but still outside our front door we come to some flower-like things hanging from one of the palm trees. This morning, when I walked in, they were all abuzz with bumble bees. They were swarming this thing, it was pretty neat to see. What's also not shown here is the fact that throughout the day, there were 3 different type of bees that were farming this plant. These in the morning, some yellowjacket types later on in the morning, then some bright yellow and black hornets later on in the day.

Ahem, at any rate...
IMG_5284_small.jpg

And, as you can see, they were all Black & White (see, I knew I wouldn't have to cheat to get this category :p)
IMG_5289_small.jpg

And this one happens to be Upside Down
IMG_5291_small.jpg

Eventually, I moved on from our office building, as I kinda needed to be home at some time that night (and I didn't want my coworkers stopping to drive me home, I wanted to make sure that I actually got to shooting today, I may have pulled this off by leaving a little early too...just maybe.)

So, now we meander over to the University of South Alabama campus (hm, we call it "USA," does that count as Patriotic? :p (I got plans for that one over the next few days though.)) For another take on Upside Down
IMG_5346_small.jpg

And with that, I'll leave you with another entry for Macro. Don't inspect this too close, it won't hold up, but I love it at web viewing size...
IMG_5298_small.jpg

So, that makes 11 (I didn't count "Black & White" before, since making a photo black & white to call it part of the category is cheating imo :p)

And before you ask. Yes, I have developed a "thing" for lizards. They're so cute, not particularly cuddly, but still cute. They make me happy just watching them.

LOL, Allan. Great work! :lmao:

Loving everyone's work!

I've gotten some of the categories here and there (finally got the turkeys!) but I've got to get them uploaded.

I spent the day yesterday celebrating my 20th anniversary in Oregon wine county. I took this pano of grapevines on my phone with an app called Photosynth.

I finally have some more to post.

Great pictures everyone! Love the bees by cafeen and twigs.
I'm particularly jealous of your fireflies, twigs. We don't have any fireflies in Oz...but that is really just a minor detail, really! ;)

Barrie - Congrats on your 20th anniversary. That's a great panoramic effect. :thumbsup2

I removed a post that may steal the thunder from Princess' sails (mixed metaphors are the win). So, instead, I'm just going to say... um... something! (Though, I do have a great idea for it, but I'm not going to be able to do it myself :()

We don't have fireflies around my area either, they may have some in Mobile (I don't know), but not where I live :(. Plus, I don't feel particularly safe being outside in my neighborhood with $2000 worth of camera equipment very late at night...

I do have an idea for "Light Trails" though, but may have to risk life, limb, and more importantly, camera equipment to do it.

So, upon being super bored at work today, I was able to fill out two categories in one.

I present you with... Patriotic Peppermint, with a guest star of Red Clear Vinylmation Mickey.

Don't risk the camera equipment! (never mind the life or limb! :rotfl:)

Nice patriotic mints!

My post for this week is my category stretch as well; or more accurately, I’m stretching one category for this week’s submissions. I resorted to my Favourite Hobby of Stalking for this set and whilst it has been fun, half the fun is in sharing. Stalking more would have been pushing this beyond stupid!

What is It?

0623LightinWinter075.jpg

Every single one these these posts are about Mosaics. And rather like the mosaic on the floor at the entry of this arcade, Welcome to my Marvellous Melbourne Mosaic Madness!

0703ScavHuntMosaics006.jpg

The mosaic on the floor consists of these figures, rather like Mannequins. The guy looks rather Irate!

0702CityWalk009.jpg

Macro view, or close enough.

0623ScavHunt014.jpg

Rope Swing – not quite but, it is a rope!

0623ScavHunt013.jpg

…on an Anchor

0623ScavHunt012.jpg

Somewhere in Melbourne, there is a Century of Centuries.

0623ScavHunt017.jpg

This represents 100 Australian entertainers over the last 100 years! Rather Patriotic, don’t you think?

0623ScavHunt020.jpg

Look closely – Nobility. The entertainer with a crown is called The King of Australian television, Graham Kennedy. He hosted a bunch of game shows and was famous for ad-libbing.

0623ScavHunt021.jpg

Fedora A number of the individuals are wearing hats.

0623ScavHunt023.jpg

This large mosaic is one that I have posted on a previous hunt. (It is a newly taken shot rather than from my collection). This mural, which consists of over 1 million tiles, tells the story of fire.

0624ScavHunt002.jpg

This Horse and Rider (no statue) is the legend of Phaeton, who rode his father’s chariot too close to the earth and started a tragic fire.

0624ScavHunt009.jpg

This raised the ire of Zeus, who cast a bolt of lightning thus burning Phaeton to death. I think it’s more like Fire Flies-ying than lightning! (Stretchy - but I got it in! :teeth:)

0624ScavHunt008.jpg

Mythology also tells us the story of Prometheus, who stole fire from Zeus to give it to man. He’s the one Upside Down.

0624ScavHunt004.jpg

Fire was used by man for Illumination and to power Steam Engines to further enhance civilisation.

0624ScavHunt005.jpg

But fire also brings death and destruction. Take a look at the Tall Ship burning….

0624ScavHunt010.jpg

….and the Spooky Apparition representing Death.

0624ScavHunt006.jpg

Here’s another set of nearly Patriotic type mosaics. These ones are more community related.

0708Mosaics003.jpg

Pamela Irving got a bunch of school kids to participate in this project. She taught them all to make mosaic faces.

0708Mosaics008.jpg

Her shop is located near this train station.

0708Mosaics009.jpg

The underside of the railway bridge was a prime spot for vandals. And rather than living with the graffiti, she decided to beautify it. Check out the I-Beams used for the railway overpass and the mosaics underneath.

0708Mosaics010.jpg

0708Mosaics017.jpg

Here are samples of the mosaic faces….all with Toothless Grins.

0708Mosaics013.jpg

0708Mosaics014.jpg

0708Mosaics016.jpg

Except for this one….which is more like a Yawn.

0714ScavHuntMosaic016.jpg

I did head down the road to take a look at her studio. It was closed; but I’m guessing that the mosaic shown in the window in For….er….On Sale

0708Mosaics019.jpg

I was really only interested in the Bird Bath, with Bird in it.

0708Mosaics021.jpg

Here some more mosaics from around town. This one is found on the front of the Newspaper Building, 1st floor. “I’ll put a Girdle Round About the Earth” represents the story of communication – horn signals, telegraph and wires. Certainly rather Antiquated means of communication in our modern world of bits, bytes and wireless technology!

0702CityWalk014.jpg

The mosaic floor in the Block Arcade is also one that I have previously posted. It is the largest sheet of continuous mosaic in Melbourne and is Heritage Trust listed.

In response to Allan’s (cafeen) comments about Black and White….I used the Monochrome Picture Style in-camera to achieve this Black and White shot.

0703ScavHuntMosaics011.jpg

The mosaic on the floor has a border that consists of stylised Acanthus leaves…Grapevine.

0703ScavHuntMosaics021.jpg

And I rather liked this pattern for ZigZag.

0703ScavHuntMosaics015.jpg

Other miscellaneous mosaic categories...

Fishy

0714ScavHuntMosaic003.jpg

It’s a bird…so I’m going with Chickadee

0714ScavHuntMosaic015.jpg

Lady Bug, with Bumble Bee in the background

Bumble Bee and Rose

Hope you enjoyed my mosaic category stretching collection! :goodvibes

Thank you!

Twigs - I love your firefly pics! Sadly, we do not have fireflies in Portland. I really miss them.

I had no idea what I was going to get for zigzag and then today I happened upon this cool rock. It's much bigger than it appears in this photo.
