Photo Assignments,,,, ??

A photography board I surf (Photography Review.com) also has something like this. They call it the monthly Photo Project. They're pretty loose on interpretation of the theme (for instance, this months topic is "Portraits", leading to many wonderful pics of people, but also some portraits of peoples pets).

Pics also don't have to be new or shot during the month of the topic, they can be older pics that you might have laying around that fit the topic. And they don't limit the number of pics a person can post in a topic, although they do ask that people try to keep it reasonable.

They also keep the rules pretty simple - no gross editing in Photoshop, but darkroom-style adjustments such as changes to brightness, hue, saturation, levels, etc. are allowed. Prohibited changes are things like artificial backgrounds, cloning out imperfections, or morphing.

So for instance, this would be okay:

But this would not be okay:

Get the picture?

I'm certainly in. Most of my pics are WDW, but I would be in favor of NOT limiting the topics to Disney-related stuff. We could do a second monthly project limited to Disney parks and resorts if a lot of people want that.

I had a thought about the first shoot, Since it is Memorial day this weekend, Something to relate to Memorial day through your own eyes?

As much as I love WDW... I'd like to use these assignments to take NEW pictures, not use ones I took months ago :)

Excellent feedback everyone. After mulling it over and also reading Wilcad's post I think that if you feel that your picture needs some tweeking to make it a bit brighter or darker or boost the color I think that could work. I personally never did any darkroom work on about 98% of my film pics. Only in high school when we processed our own B&W pics. I only do some minor tweeking now. I guess thats why I said some basic editing. However, this is not a competition. No voting involved. Keep in mind that there is a thread for selective coloring when making posts for this type of project.

We will have seperate subjects/topics each month, however, you may find that a few topics will overlap. Someone mentioned Portraits, one month we'll do portraits. Some may take a portrait of their pet. Pet would also fall under the animal subject/topic.

Here is my idea for the list. I put them in an order so that some topics might relate to the season or month, although I guess any topic could produce great pics in any month.

*Buildings/Structures/Cars
*Water (ocean, lake, pond, river, rain, etc... and anything you might do,,, ie: boating, surfing, swimming, fishing, playing and so on,,,)
*Animals (pets, wild, captive, etc...)
*Sports/Action/Movement
*Nature
*Low Light/Night
*Holidays (decorations, presents, family gatherings, etc, etc...)
*Portraits
*Flash
*Depth of Field (shallow and deep)
*Landscapes
*Children
*Macro/Close-ups

There is a lot of room for creativity within each subject/topic and like I said many will kind of overlap, you may take a picture of your pet (animals) running (action) through the water (water) at night (low light/night). If you happen to be going to Disney, PERFECT. If your not going, PERFECT. You camera will still work ;)

Any other comments or suggestions before we get snapping.

Are you sure? My camera is made by Disney and it won't work unless I'm around Disney area (Disney Stores included).

Funny You mention that Jeff...... I'm off today and decided to make a few modifications to my smoker. I added a better heat diffuser, a few fire bricks and put some high heat silicone around a few of the joints to help hold in more heat and smoke. So I've been outside quite a bit today. Since I need to fire up the smoker to help seal the silicone I figured after an hour I'd throw on a few baby backs. So they're on as I type, cooking up at about 240*.... should be ready to be turned in while,,,,,, YU MMYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

I'll start up the new assignment thread,,,,,,,,,,,

The first assignment is Angst. To make it fair, everyone needs to make a pinhole camera out of a shoebox. All photos must be thoroughly photoshopped so that they include only unadulterated nature and attractive people. You have one fortminute to complete the assignment. It is not a contest. The winner will be excused from the next assignment. A passing grade is required to moving on to the next grade.

Take a look at the Big Green Egg...... Best smoker availible and you can use it for other things like searing steaks at 750 degrees or cooking pizzas... you can't beat it.

I've seen the BGE. I used to use their lump charcoal before the place that sold it went out of business. At one time I used a vertical water smoker, but it was tough keeping a good fire. I'm currently using a CharBroil offset smoker. Going on my 4th season with it. I'm looking to upgrade though. I want to make my own out of a 55 gallon steel drum. But I haven't found one yet. I think I'll make an offset out of one. At Lowe's you can get the firebox seperatly for about $55. I'm undecided where I want to mount the firebox though. I'd love to get it on the front or back but the lid might get in the way. But in this position you'll get the addition heat from the heat rising up. I may end up just putting the firebox on the side, but turn it 90* and set it lower. Mount it making an additional opening in the top to get the heat that way. Might require some additional work but will give me more efficient heat.

I finally found my ultimate smoker, but its over $1400. Falls into the same category as the Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR lens. A lottery winning purchase at this point.
