I do quite a bit of phone answering at my job.

Why do (mostly men) people say, after I say "may I help you," they say "Yeah, hi, how ya doing?"

And then there's this long pause because they're waiting for me to respond.

UUUGGGHHHH!

Just state your business already so I can get on with my work!

They don't realize how many calls I get, and that my other lines are ringing and I just need to know who they are coming in to see so I can unlock the door!!!!!!!

Okay, I'm done now!

Maybe the men are flirting with you.:p

I make quite a few calls at work, too. I don't get too much of "hi, how ya doin'", I get their life stories instead. Most times that doesn't bother me, but one time I was tied up on the phone for over an hour. The call should've taken 10 minutes AT THE MOST.

If they saw you in person, Blondie, they would either give you a high five, or maybe a shoulder block, and say 'ehhhhhhhh'. A guy's way of greeting. :)

It's because as men, we are biologically opposed to using the phone, so we're not completely sure what to say when we actually have to use one! :p

I guess we were due for another man-bashing thread. It's been a couple of hours.;)

so, BTW, how ARE you doing?;) :jester:

Sometimes we try to be polite to the person instead of saying I NEED TO or CAN YOU...we have to kiss up first..:o

back when i had a job one of my main responsibilities was answering the phone. My line was always the same: MIC Admissions, how can i help you? Pretty much every guy who called would then ask, "hi, is this admissions?" it got so annoying!!!! No, i just said admissions but i was lying to you!!

NOW THAT is annoying..
That's when you say, NOPE wrong number..;)

Let me set up the scenerio;

I work in the Labor & Delivery/Post Partum unit. It's totally locked down. Nobody can enter the unit unless you have pass key access (employees of that unit only) or if you pick up the phone and tell me who you are there to see and I unlock the door from the nurse's station. We can see them calling on our security screens.

I love this one (which can and is used by just about anyone)

Them: "Hi, I'm here to see my cousin"

Me: "Can I have her last name please?"

Them: "Um....I'm not sure!"

Me: "I can't let you in without a last name"

Them: "Can't you look for her, she has brown hair and she just had a 9 pound baby"

Me: "Ma'am or Sir, I can't knock on 40 patient doors to find your cousin, you'll have to go make a phone call and come back with her last name."

Them: "Oh, well can you tell me if my niece is back there with them, she has red hair and should have two little girls with her."

Here's another good one:

Them: "I'm here to see my son and his girlfriend who is in labor, but I don't know her last name."

And it goes on and on and on and on and on.....

It the patient has a common last name like Smith, Brown or Jones, then I have to ask them for her first name as well.
