PHM 2015-In Pursuit of Cupcakes While Running in Glass Slippers

I use a Gymboss interval timer. I prefer it to one on my phone as that eats through battery life quickly. The Gymboss has a vibration setting, so I can always "feel" when it goes off. You can adjust the interval to whatever you want. I am still playing around with my intervals to see what works best. I also have a Garmin, but don't use it because as mentioned, too many beeping watches during races.

TRUTH x 1000%!!!!!!!!! Luckily I wasn't relying on my Garmin for intervals, was using my Gymboss. But it was hilarious to hear watches beeping & see everyone looking down at their watches to see if it was theirs :lmao:

I was wondering about that. When I was searching for reviews for GSC I found a utube video of a runner who taped a large part of the race. The timer kept going off. It was pretty loud but I think he had it close to the camcorder. I wondered if it was distracting to the people around him.

How do you set it to what you want? I've got the 5k and Half apps of his and when I punched in the time improvement program, it picked out a pace for me. I do sort of hate the app, though, because it doesn't seem to have a lock screen button (my couch to 5k app does, where you can still see it going) and yeah, I can't hear it for crap.

I did notice all the interval alarms going off when I ran PHM too. It was crazy. I almost wanted to pace myself with someone, but they kept going off all over, I couldn't place them. :/

I'm looking at the 5K app now, after you select first 5K or improve time, go down to the next line (5k pace) click it and select the minute per mile of your choosing. I have it as 12 mm. Then click save.
Then go down to the next item that says run/walk/run ratio. Change that to your choosing. Click save.

I have mine set for treadmill so when the app starts it will tell in the top left what my run pace and my walk pace should be. I don't use it enough outside to know if it talks to you with the pacing. I don't think it has a lock button, I wish it did. But I just lock my phone and it still gives me the prompts.

He doesn't tell you the pacing but will give you the walk run que. the app also tells you mile marks. Absolutely insert your play list because his gets quite annoying especially if you use his 10k or half app. It just recycle the beats over and over. Very good app for training and getting familiar with his interval training. His book is good aswell because he goes into more details about practicing glides and acceleration which helps improve your walk/run ratios as well.
I love Jeff and go to his workshop when he speaks at expos. He really is a very nice man and will answer any questions you have.

I do know that run keeper will tell you pacing even when the phone is locked but I also found that the gps is not as accurate as my Garmin watch. And run keeper kills my battery.

Trying to keep up with everyone is hard! My best wishes for our injured cupcakes! Hopefully you are back out on the road soon! To everyone with upcoming races, hope you do well and have great times to submit in July.

Tammie - love your dance recital report and hope you get the job! My sister is in education and finally landed her "dream" job after many years as a teachers and guidance counselor. Hope you get your job.

Today I ran a 10k on a whim. Signed up,yesterday and wimped out on the half marathon. My friend ran it with a pr. Flat and beautiful country roads by the water. I took some photos - who knows if I can get them up. It was a good kick in the pants since I haven't been so,good about training after the April race I did. I finished in 1:13 - not so bad. It will try again for a better time so I can move up in October.

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Hi Tammy - I just finished reading this whole thread. Love it! I'm sorry I'm late to the party.

My Real Life Side: This is me last year at Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party.
snow_zps2deb08b9.jpg

I'm mum to three kids - an 11 year old girl, an 8 year old boy and a surprise 1 year old baby boy, as well as wife of a hot scientist for 18 years now. I work at home as a designer but am in the middle of getting my realtor licence (I should be studying right now, shhh). I have low thyroid levels and have had a hard time getting them under control. I gained a lot of weight when I was pregnant with Robert and never lost it. Plus I feel like I am starving all the time. I decided I needed a goal to work towards so my husband is sending me on my own to do this race. I would love to bring my daughter but I need to think about it some more and decide if I can manage it somehow without breaking my son's heart. I love reading with a good cup of tea, Jane Austen is my favourite author. I love Doctor Who and Lord of the Rings. I'm a geek girl.

My Disney Side: I've been going to Disney with my family since I was 5. My husband and I bought our DVC at the millennium so I've been on lots of family trips to Disney. Our next family one is a visit to Star Wars weekend in June 2015. I'm booking a BWV studio for this trip. My favourite character is Snow White and my life is decidedly un-princessy lately so I am surprisingly okay with being treated like one for a weekend in February. That reminds, me, thank you for the link to the sparkleskirts as well. Never heard of the company before but I've found my outfit!

Can you guess?

My Running Side: I ran the Minnie marathon in 2008 with my sister but she can't come with me this time. Here is a link to the video I made of that trip. It makes me miss my mum whom I lost recently. I'm super slow, my 8 year old now runs the whole time in front of me. I'm terrified of sweepers but that is why I am starting early, in the hopes of improving my time. I tried to find some women in my neighbourhood who were interested in coming with me but everyone is so busy, so I'm thrilled to have found this group of wonderful, supportive women!

I have one question. Thank you for the posting the fuel link - that was a nightmare for me at the Minnie marathon. I had only ever used water during a run before and I tried a gel that was handed out by the volunteers. It made me so sick, at the end that I crossed the finish line and just kept running past it, straight to the bathroom. What I want to know is, can't you just have a banana and some water?

Overpriced champagne? Sign me up! As for cupcakes, here is my choice:

Welcome Alysa! So glad you're here! :flower3:

I continue to make progress, but my struggles with IT band syndrome are, unfortunately, not over. I've made the difficult decision to not run for the next few weeks to allow my body enough time to heal properly. If I continue to aggravate it every time I start to make progress, I'm afraid I will do permanent damage.

This week I rocked at:
Stretching every morning
Push ups every morning
Completing 3 run/walk workouts (11.5 miles total)
Averaging more than 10,000 steps per day
2 lower body strength training workouts

The plan for the week is similar to last week:
Stretching - every morning for 5 minutes
Push Ups - week 2 of my push up app (32 - 35 push ups a day)
Walking (because running's a no-no) - Monday and Saturday 3.5 miles / Thursday 4 miles (Zoom Through the Zoo - Race 1 of the M-Town Race Series in Memphis)
Strength Training - Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday

Hope you all have a GREAT week! Happy training!

Finished my first 5K yesterday. Felt great. Started the C25K program in March and finished in 35:38. :cheer2:

Now ready for homemade chocolate mint cupcakes:

Once again I seem to be AWOL from my own PTR...I even missed cupcake Friday! :scared1:

I had my first interview on Friday for this new position that I am applying for...so I had been occupied with preparing for that. On Friday, I learned that I have a second interview TOMORROW NIGHT (Tuesday) at 4 pm. So I have spent most of the weekend trying to prepare for the types of questions that this interview might throw at me. It will be a lot more in depth then the last one...the last one they asked me a little more about my work experience (very pointed questions, since really they already know me), 5 leadership examples, and then 3-5 experiences that make me qualified for this position. All of it they already know about me...I was about to have a severe case of looking through the want ads and finding a new job if I did not make it past this interview. Of the 5 or so other people that have the skill set for this job knowledge wise I am the only one that applied from our group.

The interview tomorrow is really going to be pointed at instruction, assessment, and vision for this position...I AM A STRESS BASKET AT THE MOMENT.

Both sides of my brain are fueding with each other...one says there is no way that they can NOT hire you and the other side is filling me with self doubt...I am so trying to LET IT GO and pray....

I assume that after this interview they will narrow it down to 2-3 and then we have the scariest interview of all with the superintendent of the district. Who initially hired me 20+ years ago, but I am sure this interview with be nothing like that one...

Good luck Tammie! :cheer2: I'll be thinking of you. I bet you get it!!!!!!!

Good luck Tammie! You must be in the running as they know you so well! Can't wait to hear about them offering it to you!

Welcome!! I cant handle the gels either. They are too heavy on my stomach. I have found (through much trial & error), that works best for me is chews. I like the Honey Stinger chews in cherry blossom. I also use pretzels, raisins, Honey Stinger energy bars & sometimes peanut butter M&M's.

I like oatmeal (maple & brown sugar flavor) with a handful of raisins & a banana pre-race. During some of my races they have handed out orange slices or banana pieces, & those seem to work during my race too.

I would suggest trying out new things fueling wise during your training runs. There are lots of people who love the gels, but...I am not one. Same with PowerAde/Gatorade...I can drink those without any issues, but many people cannot handle them during a race.

Cute costume for PHM! I *almost* did Snow White last year, but changed my mind.

Sorry about the struggles with your ITB. I was out for close to 2 months with ITB issues after my half marathon in Nov, & didn't have many training runs the 3 weeks or so before that. :wizard: you can recover quickly!
