Colleen - :thumbsup2 Thanks for that surprise! Good luck tomorrow:love: , we'll really miss you this weekend:sad1: , but that'll make it all the better in DISNEY in Jan., which is RIGHT around the corner. Don't fret, my dear, we'll all be thinking about you as well.

Dave - Ditto on the ressie thing! Is the hotel near the restaurant? OK, I'll bite, what is Mike talking about w/ this thing w/ you & Steve?

Mike - Ok, ok, no more bungee talk, but if someone's handing out vicodin I should be just fine, in my own little world, not worried about the pace! Um, Dave's not responding to call outs for the pole dance, so you may have to take this burden on yourself.

Chester - Looking forward to reading the back of your shirt! And don't rule out a pole dance for you...in the loin cloth...

Cindy - Don't worry, we'll find you! Thanks for the great weather...& if you're reading this, GET TO WORK!:rotfl2:

Sara - No ma'm, no previews on the robot! You'll just have to wait for me @ the finish line. BTW, any chance of a bellydance preview?

 This is gonna be great!

Colleen - I'd like to echo Jodi's earlier post in thanking you for starting this thread. I'm sorry that you won't be able to make it this weekend and wish you the best of luck in feeling better. The Disboards is my first time ever posting on online discussion boards, so I still feel a bit intimidated by it all. Having a smaller thread with only a few people on it made me less intimidated about posting (I'd also like to thank Mike for calling out the lurkers that gave me the kick in the a@# to post).

In case you don't see the Race Reports/Kudos thread (AOL and DIS are fighting on my computer right now..)

 :cheer2: GO TEAM GO!!! :cheer2:

Have fun and be safe...YOU ALL ARE AWESOME!!! Hoooo Raaah!! :goodvibes Anne

Hey Everyone!

First off, I just wanted to say how nice it was to meet everybody this weekend. It made the whole marathon experience a lot more enjoyable for me. Thanks again.

How is everyone feeling this morning? I'm glad that I don't have to work today and am sorry for those of you who do. Stairs are not my friends today!

Jodi - Great finishing time!! Obviously no Jodi stops along the way;) . So, did you and Bruce make it to the airport in time? I'd consider it a minor miracle if you did. Was Bruce able to find you anywhere on the course?

Sara - We were really concerned for you at the end. We checked the results for you a few times but they never showed you as finishing. I was so happy to see you finished (well before the last time we checked results :confused3 ). I hope you are feeling decent today. Now concentrate on getting yourself well!

Chester - How was the trip home? Did it take you a while to get back to the hotel? The lines for the Metro and the shuttles were crazy.

Dave - Same question as for Chester? Did things thin out a bit by the time you tried to get back? Kathy and I ended up walking about a mile up the road to get the next Metro stop. We got a bite to eat and by that time had no trouble getting on.

Colleen - Know that you were there with us in spirit. We really missed you!

Cindy - How did things turn out for you? Did you have a good race?

Again, thanks again everyone for a great weekend. I'll miss our cozy little thread :sad1: . I guess we'll just have to stay in touch in the scrum of the weekly thread.

I got in at 11:00 p.m. last night and had to take a post-race shower and stretch at that point:eek: I am at work today but I'm feeling pretty good. I just need to keep walking around. I sent you a PM with my e-mail address for the kids pics.

Sara - We were really concerned for you at the end. We checked the results for you a few times but they never showed you as finishing. I really, really appreciate your concern and I am so sorry to have worried you. I took it easy to not do any unnecessary damage to my leg but the cattle call at the end through the finish area plus the horror of getting back to Crystal City really tested my limits.
Cindy - How did things turn out for you? Did you have a good race?
Cindy looked AWESOME at mile 24-25 when she introduced herself to me and asked if I was doing alright. I also really appreciated that and I was glad to have gotten the chance to meet her.

I just wanted to say that DH, the kids and myself all had an absolutely wonderful weekend and I feel so blessed to have acquired some new WISH friends. Thanks so much for spending time with us and for saying hi to my scream team out on the course:grouphug: . Thanks to Chester:hug: also for asking me if I was alright on the mall when I was popping pills (just Advil, not Vicodin!). To Mike for running the first few miles with us even though he is way fast:woohoo: . To Dave for trying to talk to me at mile 4 even though I was giving him my one-word answers:love: . To Jodi for all of your support and for making me laugh:hug: . You guys once again reminded me that the race is really a small part of it all. I hope you all had safe travels at home and I will catch you on the weekly thread.

Sara - We checked the results for you a few times but they never showed you as finishing. I was so happy to see you finished (well before the last time we checked results :confused3 ).

Mike,

I know,:scared1: I didn't get Sara's final chip time until 5 p.m.:confused3

So glad you all had a wonderful weekend! After I spoke to you all Sunday morning, I went back into the bedroom to find DH still sleeping!:confused3 He never sleeps in even on weekends he is always up at 5 or 6. I asked him how he was and he was SO sick! DD8 was home sick from school on Tuesday, DS10 was home sick on Friday so when DH, in a weakened state after flying home from China and Germany, easily picked up the bug.:guilty:

The kids are home today from school, but I did get a 6 a.m. yoga session this morning.

Congratulations again, are there pictures? What is the medal like?

Duuuuuuudes!

Good Morning Everyone!! At work, thighs are feeling a bit sore & yes, stairs are a little bit of a challenge:sad2: , but all in all, still here without any serious reprecussions.

Wow, what a whirlwind weekend! It was soooo cool meeting you all! Thank you, thank you, thank you, for making my first WISH meet so enjoyable & for taking in this "noobie" with open arms!:grouphug:

Colleen - We Missed you so, but that phone call in the am was perfect timing! We were all there, fresh outta the portapotty! Thanks again for starting the thread - how was your appt. Friday???? Disney's just around the corner

Dave - Great running w/ you for nearly 16 miles!!:yay: Your upbeat conversation & dispostion did wonders to offset my, uh, well, different perspective on things:lmao: Thanks for hangin' with me...hope your dad enjoyed himself.

Sara - I was laughing when Dave ran up behind you to try & chit chat:rotfl2: , he fell back in & said "ok, Sara's got her headphones on & isn't talking...she doesn't look to happy.":scared1:

Chester - I saw your wife, Tracy, twice on the course!! I mean, I don't think I looked up from the road more than 4x:rotfl: , & there she was. TWice on the "mall". How are you feeling today? Home safe?

Mike - DItto on the thanks for chillin' w/ us for a couple miles b4 bolting off into the sunrise:laughing: . It was a pleasure meeting you & Kathy. It was so cool that you found the rest of us when we got off the Metro in the am. Thanks for that. I got to see Bruce @ mile 21 in Crystal City, he handed me an ipod that was much needed those last few miles!

Cindy - OK, now we know that there is no way we woulda found you in that mob in the am. What a coincidence that you ran into Sara in the end:banana: , that's too cool. Sorry I didn't catch up w/ you - next time for sure. HOw'd you make out?

If you can believe it, Bruce & I did make our flight...barely, they were just boarding when we arrived. Our hotel locked us out of the room (w/ all our stuff in it) @ 1:30. Bruce was int the lobby waiting for me, but we all know how heinous it was trying to get out of there. I took the bus (which took a wrong turn, of course, adding about 5 precious mins. onto the trip) got them to let us back in the room to get our stuff, showered quickly & bolted. It was really scary for a while there, driving 80 to the airport:rolleyes: , but the traffic got tied up & blah blah. Bottom line, though, we made it home after only a 40 min. flight 'cause of 100 mph tailwinds:thumbsup2 .

Gotta work, will write more later, but thanks again all, for making this the running experience I've ever had:hug:  . So good to meet you all!

Congratulations to all for finishing!! I'm glad I got to meet Sara (if only for 10 seconds) and sorry I never ended up running into the rest of you.

All of my co-workers keep stopping by my office today to ask how the marathon went and I kind of find myself unsure as to how to reply. Physically I am fine - I'm actually not much more sore than after a 20 mile training run, which, as I think about that, kind of makes me feel bad about the race. I know I could have pushed myself harder and now I kind of regret not doing so, which I realize is stupid because I did just finish my first marathon. At some point around mile 16 I simply decided that finishing in under 5 hours sounded pretty good and I just made sure that I did that without really trying to get a time that was any better. It's not that I'm saying that there is anything wrong with an almost 5 hour finish, just that I think I am sort of mad at myself that I will never know if I could have done better.

I did have a rough race mentally (which I know contributed to me not pushing myself). I ran into my husband around mile 11 - he was having stomach issues and had lost a lot of time in the port-o-potties. Then he ran on ahead of me and I ran into him again before the half. His calf had been bothering him for a few weeks but he thought it was fine but I guess it really started bothering him and he could barely run. And he said he felt like his stomach was cramping up. So I left him before mile 14 (with him limping and having stomach cramps) and was worried about him for the rest of the race. I knew that if he wasn't able to finish he would be very upset and I was also worried that because of that he would do something really stupid and really hurt himself by not quitting when he should have. As I finished, I was obviously really happy that I finished a marathon but all I really wanted to do was get to the UPS truck and get my stuff and cell phone and find out what happened to my DH. I felt like it took an eternity to get out of the finish chute.

In the end, he did manage to finish by walking most of the second half and I guess his stomach problems actually went away soon after I left him. He can barely walk today because his calf hurts so bad, so perhaps it wasn't the best physically that he did finish, but I can't imagine how upset he would have been if he hadn't. He is still pretty upset with how things ended up, but at least he finished.

Anyway, to sum up my feelings about this race, I guess the most overwhelming feeling that I am left with is that I really want to run another marathon!

Cindy - OMG, that is sooo awesome! Once again, thanks for posting from "The Post"! My DS got to watch me cross the finishing line just now, how cool is that? He actually got excited:rotfl: . I was reading with interest your post about your feelings on finishing. I'm much of the mind set like you are, wish I'd've pushed harder, not too happy w/ my times, etc., but we really should just learn to be happy w/ our accomplishments. I hope that'll happen for me soon:lmao: , usually I just curse @ myself as people 20 years older than me leave me in the dust!:goodvibes Congratulate yourself on finishing your VERY FIRST MARATHON!! Good for you! There will be times in the future for you to "push" harder...or not, if you're like me:lmao: . I hope your DH feels better, that's rough. Give him our best here on the boards! Oh, & thank him again for that cold dance...it sure paid off - couldn't have ordered a better day!:cloud9:

FANTASTIC jobs MCM vets!!! STOP that nonsense talk about pushing harder!! How do you know that if you had pushed harder maybe you would have blown up at mile 20 and not been able to finish at alll...hmmmmm???? :confused3

We are WAAAAAAYY proud of all of you!!!!
:cool1: :woohoo:  :dance3: :worship: :yay: :thumbsup2 :jumping1: party: :dancer:

Cindy - Thanks so much for the link. Excellent to be able to see everyone finish. Sorry but I couldn't pick you out of the crowd.

Congratulations on finishing your first (and still being excited to do more!). I think I'll give up running for a few days!

Jodi - The video lost you just a little too soon. Was there a robot dance?

Sara - You didn't look too crabby ;) . Great finish. We got your PM. Kathy said it will probably take a while to wrestle the pictures out of her camera.

Dave and Chester - What the heck!!! You two looked like you were being chased by the boogey man! I sure as heck didn't have any gas left in the tank for a sprint like that. Way to finish strong!!

Wow. What a weekend! Before I get to my race report I just want to say thanks to all the MCMers and their families for the times that were shared with Tracy and I.

Sorry I haven't posted yet, but we arrived home at 11:30 Sunday night and I had a lot to do today because today id DD's 16th birthday. I spent the whole morning working hard so that I could pick her up from school in this:

MIRANDASCAR1.jpg

She was completely taken by surprise and was speachless.

Later, we met up with my Sister and had dinner at DD's favorite restaurant. Then we went to watch her HS soccer game. She did'nt think she was supposed to play because she has only been to a couple of practices due to marching band. After she arrived, They had her change into a uniform, borrowed some cleats and shinguards, and put her in at sweeper (she plays Goalkeeper for her Premier Club Team, so I was affraid she would forget that she couldn't use her hands). She had a great game (especially after expecting to be only a spectator). Even though they lost 1-0, she made some spectacular slide tackles and kept the game close.

At midnight, I finally had a chance to go online and try to catch up reading posts. I had a great time in DC.

Before I get to the race report, I want to post a picture of my last night run through Florida Panther territory before leaving for MCM. Jody this one's for you:

Marine Corps Marathon October 18th, 2007

Please forgive any distorted facts, loss of recollection or just plain errors of memory. This is what I remember from the weekend....

Tracy and I arrived at Reagan International early Friday afternoon to a light drizzling rain. We took a short taxi ride to the Crystal City Hilton and checked in. At check-in I arranged for a late check-out with the expectation of returning in time after the race to take a shower before eating and heading to the airport.

After settling in, we inquired from the front desk "How to get to the nearest Metro station?". "It's just 3 blocks up, behind the Marriott" we were told. So off into the rain we go. We encounter a Metro sign pointing to the right before we got to the Marriott, so I decide to disregard the instructions, and follow the sign. Then we came to a Metro sign that pointed left. So we followed it, Then one that pointed Right, Then one that pointed Left, Then that pointed Right. Then one that pointed straight ahead. Low and behold, there was the entrance to the Metro, right behind the Mariott where they said it was.

This is going to get long at this rate, I had better speed things up a bit.

Went to the expo. Got the race package. Verified the chip. Picked up the goody bag and shirt. Went shopping. Bought stuff. Bought a pair of Mizuno Wave Creations in size 12.5 (they are had to come by in this size). Navigated the Metro back to Crystal City to catch up with the other W.I.S.H.ers for out meet at Bebo Trattoria.

Instead of heading up to street level, we followed some other passengers through corridors that lead to the meeting site and also a block away from our hotel! Why the heck did we walk for blocks in the rain when we could have travelled from block to block underground instread?

We really enjoyed dinner with the group. Mike & Kathy were there when we arrived. Jodi & Bruce and Sara & Mike & DD's arrived soon after. Dave phoned the restaurant and we were given the message that he and his Father were running late. The rest of us chatted and ate while we awaited Dave's arrival. Then we chatted some more while Dave and his Dad ate. Then we chatted some more. What a great group. Sara's DD's were real troopers and a delight to have been included. The night ended for us with plans to meet at the Metro entrance Sunday Morning to ride together to the start.

Tracy and I spent Saturday visiting Monuments and Museums. The rain and grey skies cleared Saturday afternoon and yielded to clear blue skies. I wore my new shoes to see if they could possibly be raceable on Sunday. Saturday night I prepped my clothing and gear and pinned a tribute to my Dad on the back of my race shirt:

2007MCMshirttribute.jpg

Sunday morning we all met up and headed to the Pentagon Metro station to make our way to the starting area. Dave checked in his race bag and then we headed to the potty lines. Jodi picked a line and Sara and Mike followed. Dave picked the next line over and I picked the 2nd line over. Boy, Dave and I are Amatuers. Jodi, Sara and Mike were all finished before dave was up to bat and I was still on deck. Jodi can sure pick em.

With a little reservation, I followed the group to the 4:15-4:30 starting area. My game plan called for starting in the 4:30-5:00 corral, but the temperatures were great, I felt good and I was with friends.

We started together and crossed the start about 6 minutes after the gun. Kathy and Tracy were chearing us on from the side of the first overpass. I checked with Garmin and my pace was a little over 10mpm. Heart rate was a little higher than I planned. I was running at a half-marathon target but, the temperatures were great, I felt good and I was with friends.

After a mile or so the WISHers were slowly pulling away from me which was o.k. because we each had slightly different paces in mind. And besides, the temperatures were great, I felt good and I was among 30,000 new friends.

I found near mile 10 stretching along the right side of the course and asked if she was o.k.. She replied yes, so I kept going, still at just over a 10mpm pace.

Somewhere around mile 11 I saw Dave's Dad and Mike and shared high fives. At 11.5, I got a cell call from DD asking "where the shop vac was?" Hello..... McFly..... I'm in the middle of a race here. Look on the front porch. Tracy was near mile 13 and snapped this shot of me:

2007MCMchesterhalfway.jpg

I heard Mike(Sara's DH) call out my name at 14/15. Right after, my pace started slipping as my calves started tightening up. I began slowing down to stretch them out about every 1/4 mile. Miles 16-21 were a real struggle. Besides the calves, My right hamstring was on the verge of cramping. At mile 19 I took some ibuprofen. Sara passed me around the bridge at the 20 mile mark. She was struggling too - walking some and running some. I did'nt check in on her, figuring that her struggle, like mine was best dealt with alone. We leap frogged position several times while crossing the bridge. At about mile 22 the ibuprofen must have kicked in, because I was able to pick up the pace a little stay with the flow of traffic. I moved along now with an average pace of just over 11mpm, but had a struggle up the final hill just before the finish. I was able to speed up the last 100 yards and sprint through the finish.

Clocktime = 05:01:05
Chiptime = 04:55:05

A PR by 35 minutes! Not quite the 4:30 that I envisioned during the first 15 miles, but I'm not at all dissapointed. Afterall, the temperatures were great, I felt good and I was among 30,000 new friends.

It took a loooong time to work through space blankets, finish photos, water & snacks and commemerative coin pick-up to make it to the meet-up tent area. But, when I got there Mike & Kathy, Dave & Dad and Tracy were there waiting for me. Jodi finished about a half hour earlier than me and was high tailing it back to the hotel. We tried tracking Sara to find her, but there was quite a lag with results. We waited until about 2:00pm, then decided to work our ways back. Here are the Male WISH finishers:

Catching the Metro was a disaster. The crowds were huge. Tracy and I finally made our way back to the Hotel around 3:30pm. The hotel allowed me to use the Health Club Showers to clean up. We grabbed a bite at Chili's, caught the shuttle to the airport, had a seemingly long flight and arrived at our house at 11:30pm.

My legs are sore, but not painfully sore. Just that good kind of soreness that reminds you that the temperatures were great, that you felt good and that you were among 30,000 new friends for a 26.2 mile run(or 26.66 if you believe in Garmin).

There's a lot that I've left out, but it was a great, well managed and staffed race, and I highly recommend it.

Good Morning MCMer's: :surfweb:

I'm sorry I didn't post yesterday. I just couldn't. My depression hasn't let up from the weekend. I know I put on a brave face while I was there, but I just can't get over the fact that Jodi beat me by only 4 min. I have been walking around muttering to myself 4 min, 4 min, 4 min. Why couldn't Jodi have had one of her Jodi stops? I was trying to get her to go to the port a john while we were running. Why didn't I grab her when I saw her at the turn around at Crystal City? Why did I have to watch "Four Minutes" for my inspirational movie before the race?

OK, seriously, I had such a great time over the weekend. Colleen, thank you so much for starting this thread. I would not have run the MCM if it weren't for you. It was a great event, and I was especially glad that I could share it with my Dad. I can't remember the last time we were able to spend some time together like that. It was fantastic.

So my weekend went like this. I flew in late Friday afternoon. Dad picked me up at BWI, and we started to head down to DC. My flight arrived at 5:00p, by the time we got my luggage, and went back to the car it was already 6:00pm. We're now sitting in traffic on I-290, and there's no way we're going to make it to the WISH meet at 6:30pm. So I call the restaurant to say we're running about an hour late. That was about right. We made it to the restaurant at 7:30pm, and I didn't see anyone there. But then the waiter takes me to a back room, where everyone was stashed. We had a great dinner, great food, and it was great to meet everyone.

Sunday morning I met Jodi and Sara in the hotel lobby, and head to the Metro station.

Met up with Chester and Tracy at the Metro station.

Somehow Mike and Kathy saw us when we got off the Metro.
DSC01364.jpg

And we head for port-a-john city at the Pentagon. As far as I know this is the last documented time that Sara smiled.

OK, I need to get ready for work, but I'll be back and post more of my weekend report later.

Hey Colleen, here's pictures of my medal. It's a very handsome medal.
