I had taken Phen-Fen and filed in the class action suit. I never suffered any damage to my heart (*knock wood*), but filed to be reimbursed for my out-of-pocket prescription and doctor costs. I NEVER thought anything would come of it, and I even thought I had received a letter a while back telling me I wasn't eligible for any money.

I was surprised to receive a check yestereday. Has anyone else received a check recently?

Wow, how do you find out.

I remember years ago filling out papers, having an echo done, the whole works.
Then nothing.

And I think we have moved a couple times since then.
Guess I should search out a website, huh?

I filed and received reimbursement for the meds years ago. Every couple of years I receive an 8 x 10 envelope with a bunch of legal talk in it.

Well recently I had to go to the hospital in an ambulance and the EMT mentioned something about my heart skipping a beat. After that I started with a new doctor and they took an EKG and the technician had to "reset" the machine 3 times becuase the EKG "didn't look right".

So now I'm going to make an appt. with a cardiologist.

ps. I only took it for 3 months...wish me luck.

OK, stupid question perhaps but...why would you take part in a suit when you weren't harmed?

I'll give my opinion on this question...

I also took the meds for two months and didn't join the class action suit, because to the best of my knowledge, I'm okay. I did have the echo done at one point though due to my concerns over the "possible" repercussions of the drugs. I still wonder about it even though it's been several years. I can understand why others joined the suit. My SIL did and received a check of some sort (don't know how much). I certainly don't begrudge it to her.

To me, it isn't an issue of begrudging anyone the money so much as wondering why people would want money when they weren't hurt or injured.

Also, I'm thinking it can't do much to help keep drug prices down when companies are paying out money to people that weren't even damaged by the drugs.

As I said in my first post, I filed a claim because I wanted to be reimbursed for my out-of-pocket expenses. I had a co-pay for both the drugs and the doctor visits. I was on phen-fen for over 6-8 months and was told I am very lucky that I don't have any problems. As for being on it in the first place, no one knew it was harmful until a few months after it was first prescribed.

I'm not sure why this isn't a valid excuse for filing a claim. It amounted to at least $200 from my pocket.

Thanks, I read your post the first time and already knew what the reimbursement was for, and that was part of my point. Why would you be reimbursed for medical care that did you no harm?

Why should I pay for medical care that proved to be worthless based on a error by a drug manufacturer?

You took it to lose weight, correct? Did you not lose any weight? If you didn't, why did you take it for 6 - 8 months? And if you did lose weight, how can you say it was worthless? :confused3

I guess if I admit that I didn't sustain the weight loss, it's my fault, so I'm not entitled to any money?

I believe that it was impossible to sustain the weight loss without the drugs because I think that the drugs created an artificial crutch by substantially lowering the appetite and raising the metabolism. Once I stopped taking the drugs, my appetite went back up and my metabolism went back down. The only reason why I stopped taking the drugs is that they were taken off the market because they proved to be harmful.

So ... as far as I'm concerned ... I never would have paid for 6-8 doctor's visits to monitor a drug that proved not to successfully work.

As I understand it (and I may be completely wrong, because I haven't been involved in this issue for a long time), just because things are okay now, doesn't mean they will be in the future. Problems could still arise.

It's been almost 10 years...I highly doubt that anything would show up at this point that hasn't already.

Of course, it won't matter whether the drug caused it or not - anyone that ever took it that ever comes up with any kind of heart problem will blame it on the drug.

You've already admitted that the drug worked, proving that it was successful...but so long as you got some $$, all is well I guess.

You know, I really don't owe you an explanation of what I choose to do.

However, as far as I'm concerned, the whole experience was a waste of money and I'm glad I was reimbursed my costs. I don't understand why that bugs you. What bugs me is drug companies charging astronomical amounts of money to elderly patients on limited budgets. If they had to give up some of those profits, oh well.

And I'm done with this thread. If anyone else was reimbursed, please e-mail me.

You right, you don't.

I don't understand why that bugs you.

It bugs me when people take advantage of a situation that doesn't affect them in anyway to line their own pockets. Had there never been a heart issue with the drug, you would have eventually gotten off it, possible re-gained the weight, and chalked up your monetary loss as a lesson learned. But never miss an opportunity to take money from a company you think has too much, I guess.

Try to remember that when you're spending the money you got from the drug company, because you helped contribute to those high prices.

If they had to give up some of those profits, oh well.

They don't give up the profits, they just pass on the cost to other people buying their drugs. Like the elderly you mentioned above.

You mean like someone having a good government job and using their work time to blast people on internet bulletin boards instead of finding something work related to do? :wave2:

Said the woman sucking off the tit of the government while pretending to work.

She said smugly and without conscience as to her own wrongfull acceptance of money that she hasn't really earned.

And hey hey hey I pay your wages while you sit there and file your nails, just so you remember that next time you go after someone for joining in a class action lawsuit that she was perfectly entitled to. Your wages come at the blood sweat and tears of others who actually work for a living.

It's called leave Patti - I get 30 days of it every year, plus holdiays, plus comp time. Thanks! :thumbsup2 With all I've save up over the years, I have to take quite a bit before 1 October (you've heard of use or lose, right? )

I'm not at work today, and haven't been this week - but as always, thanks for your concern! :thumbsup2

Actually, I don't file my nails at work - I have a manicurist that is the bomb! I guess since you pay my salary, you should have a say in who that is? I'll be happy to pass on her name, just in case you're ever in the area! :goodvibes

Are you saying that you don't post from work? I wasn't just talking about today you know.
