Thanks guys for all the encouragement for my Dad and my family!!! I will try and respond to you all individually later - I need to get the next chapter kicked out now!!!!

Carsyn has next Rugby game tonight so I need to leave by 3:30 to get there and have enough time for traffic since it is on the other side of the cities! Who decides on 5p.m. games with traffic!!!

I also need to get the egg salad recipe down here...I have a huge to do list for sure!

Chapter Five: The Colonel and Shannn - just not in the same bucket!

One tidbit I forgot to tell you about is there were these neat headbands with feathers/flowers at the gift store at Lynn's. Carsyn was in love with them and I asked her how much one was she was trying on. :confused3

She looked at the tag and then she turned it upside down, sideways and backwards trying to make sense of the numbers.

She said, "Well it says $55.00 but that can't be right."

She grabbed a different one. That one said $65!

I agreed they had to be missing a decimal somewhere! These were normal cheap headbands from Target with ribbon wrapped around and a flower from Michael's glued to the sucker. I would have paid from $5.00-maybe even $10.00 for a few.

For $55.00 it better have been worn by Lady Gaga at the fun-house and be blessed by the Pope.

Cute but not that cute.

So she went up and talked to the person behind the counter and asked if $55.00 was indeed the right price.

The girl, about 22, said "Yes it is and I know it is insane!"

So Carsyn did not get her cute and crafty headband. If anyone here makes those kind of things...let me know!!

After we left Lynn's, we hit the road.

I adore Kentucky's beautifully landscaped fields and fencing. So gloriously green and well manicured! The drive is stunning and I daydreamed of the people in the estates we passed who must live life like they did on Dallas!!

Esp. around the actual Derby racetrack - I was quiet and slack jawed which is a rarity!

We stopped by Frankfort at a few shops for kids and a Kohls for me! We had time and I wanted to get Shannon's cutie patootie kids some soccer gear! At Kohls I got a pair of sunglasses and Baylor a swimsuit.

Then, a bit further down the road...we saw signs we were approaching Kentucky's claim to fame. :3dglasses

The reason people all over the world fell in love with a white haired man who knew his spices!

Corbin, Kentucky...home of the original (well technically next to the original since the original is gone) KFC.

It was unexpected but still a must do on this cuisine inspired road trip!

Now do not expect it to be off the main drag cause it is not. Do not expect a bunch of bright lights escorting you into heaven, because it will not happen either.

But do expect after passing some schlocky dives, the best tasting chicken you will ever have.

We found it on the right of a narrow, two lane highway and knew our time was short but needed to become memorable! And...we needed to have a potty break so what better place than at the Colonel!

Baylor's head the size of a bucket of golden goodness!

Chilling with the Colonel!

Neat sign leading inside the original restaurant!

I actually learned a ton about KFC and the Colonel. The true stories behind someones success is never like you imagined it. Gumption really has as much to do with perseverance as diligence. Timing is everything.

Here is some info you foodies might like!

For many years, people from all over the United States and the world have enjoyed the culinary creation of Corbin’s most famous citizen — Harland Sanders, known worldwide as Colonel Harland Sanders.

Even though people all over the globe are familiar with the snow-white bearded restaurant icon, few are familiar with how the Colonel got his start in the restaurant business.

Sanders, who was born on Sept. 9, 1890 in Henryville, Indiana, lost his father at the age of six. After completing the sixth grade, Sanders quit school and went to work at a variety of jobs. During his early years, Sanders worked as a farm hand, streetcar conductor, steamboat ferry operator, railroad fireman, secretary, insurance salesman, tire salesman and furniture store owner. However, it wasn’t until 1930 that Sanders moved to Corbin, where he would one day forge the culinary empire for which he was famous.

Once in Corbin, Sanders opened a service station, which was located on a spot near where the current Kentucky Fried Chicken® is located. In the back of that service station, he operated a lunchroom which consisted of one table, surrounded by six chairs. It wasn’t long, however, before word spread and Sanders found it necessary to expand his capacity.

By 1937, Sanders had built Sanders' Cafe, which seated 142 customers. At this restaurant, it was soon discovered that Sanders' fried chicken was the most popular selection on the menu.

Sanders often told of his search for the right recipe. It was while experimenting in his Corbin kitchen, that Sanders found his famous and closely guarded combination of eleven herbs and spices which he claimed “stand on everybody’s shelf.” It wasn’t only Sanders’ recipe of herbs and spices that made his fried chicken unique. He also used a pressure cooker to fry his chicken.

In 1939, fire destroyed the eatery, which Sanders then rebuilt as both a restaurant and motel. For many years, the restaurant and motel served as a popular stop for travelers driving along what was then the major north-south route — US 25. Business continued to boom until the completion of Interstate 75, which provided an alternative route for motorists...a route which no longer directly passed Sanders’ restaurant.

Sanders subsequently auctioned the restaurant and motel off. At the age of 66, he began to sell franchises based on his famous chicken recipe. Although he was a pioneer in the relatively new business of franchising, initial sales were slow. His first franchisee went to Pete Harman of Salt Lake City, Utah. By the late 1950s, more than 200 Kentucky Fried Chicken® franchises had been sold in the United States and Canada.

During the administration of Kentucky Governor Ruby Laffoon, Sanders was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel. He was re-commissioned in 1950 by Governor Lawrence Weatherby. Although he had been a Kentucky Colonel for nearly two decades, it wasn’t until after 1950 that Sanders began to look the part, growing his trademark mustache and goatee and donning his white suit and string tie.

Sanders' oldest daughter Margaret suggested that her father start selling fried chicken as a take-home item. The first KFC® carry-out service was started at a restaurant in Jacksonville, Florida.

In 1960, Sanders moved the headquarters of his growing company to Shelbyville, Kentucky. On February 18, 1964, Sanders sold his franchise business to former Kentucky Governor John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack Massey for $2 million. Sanders was retained on salary as spokesman for Kentucky Fried Chicken®.

Over his lifetime, Sanders reportedly contributed money to religious charities, hospitals, medical research, education, the Boy Scouts®, Junior Achievement®, and the March of Dimes®.

Regardless of where he appeared, Sanders was immediately recognizable. At the age of 87, he testified against mandatory retirement before the U.S. House of Representatives Subcommittee on Aging.

Sanders died on Dec. 16, 1980, after which his body lay in state in the Capitol Rotunda in Frankfort. He was buried in Louisville’s Cave Hill Cemetery.

Each year, thousands of customers make a stop at the Corbin Kentucky Fried Chicken® location, where they can view a variety of items from the early days of Sanders’ restaurant business, including a barrel of his famous recipe, a life-size statue of the Colonel, as well as a replica of his original kitchen.

We were not very hungry and knew we were close to Shannon's so we decided to simply get a few popcorn popcorn:: chicken's to split. Hand to Heaven all of us said it was the best we had ever had. In fact, Dan joked with our cashier that he expected it to be good and she said that most people say it is better than any they have had.

I don't know if it is the water or what - but it was juicy, delicately seasoned yet captured your mouth in flavor.

Amazing and the cost - $9.42.

Sooooo going back when we can. :yay:

The best part of the adventure though was this building that was like a 7-11 or any convenience store but only more. They had tanning as an option as well. And a drive through, cigarette lane.

I would not have taken my neighbors, 3rd cousin's, flea infested dog's, largest tick there. :sad2: We had passed it on the way to the Colonel and I made Dan hold up traffic so I could get a pic as we headed back to the freeway.

Carsyn said, "You are just looking for things to post on the Disboards aren't you?" :teacher:

I said, when God hands you a gift, you do not ask questions. :lmao:

P1030820.jpg

The window the lady was selling cigarettes out of is all the way on the left of the pic.

I truly do not know what more to say besides I would not be surprised if indeed, a brothel was out back in the 3 wheeled school bus that might have ran last in 1947.

Soon, Carsyn was back to sleeping and Baylor was back to X-box. You can see their chicken on the cooler!

And then...

Off in the distance...

 :cheer2:

And shouts of alleluia were exalted because we knew we were just one porn shop away from Knoxville and Shannon's home!

The plans were for Shannon to have a few friends over that evening for a casual Silpada gathering and I was excited to meet the wonderful people she knows and ...get a shower first!

Shannon's Mom greeted us and we also got to meet her auntie! I will tell you those sisters are straight from Designing Women and I have never laughed so much at the "proper" Southern squabbling and story telling in my whole life.

The party went well and it was fun visiting with everyone and then...Courtney who we had met in December, asked if we were interested in a puppy. Actually I think she asked if anyone was but I asked, "What Kind?"

I was told it was a tiny runt and was a Pekingese/Chihuahua mix.

Carsyn was near and jumped all over a chance to get a small dog.

I asked Courtney to send me pics and we would discuss. The dog would only get to be 3 pounds at most probably and was too cute to stand. Carsyn and I were getting lulled into the thought by Courtney's persuasive sales pitch! It wasn't even her dog - a neighbor of her sister's was the owner...they just wanted a good home for her.

Of course it would mean coming back through Knoxville on the way home which we did not originally intend but...not impossible either. I mean, what is a few extra miles at that point???!!!

Dan, was sure I had lost the only brain cells I might have had left, that were not in time travel dysfunction. We are not small dog people. We have Ace, who is 120 pounds plus of 16 month old Golden Retriever mischief. He could eat this dog in one bite. His look was not happy "Sam I am!"

We also sat around the floor and looked at these amazing books Shannon had of her kiddos. Laughed at baby pics and laughed at Susan (Shannon's Mom) and Caroline (Susan's sister) rip apart, in delicate tones and subtle slams, each other in photos.

"Look at you here. This was when you were fat. These are yooooou, fat."

"Look at my hair. My Gahhhhhhd, I look simply atrocious. I look fat here in these pictures don't you think? I mean not as fat as you, but fatter than I am now?"

This went on and on and on. Literally Carsyn was giggling non stop and I felt like I was at home. They may not have the crass abrasiveness in language as we do in the Midwest, because with that Southern Drawl if you were not listening to their words, you would think they were singing a hymn, but so flippin funny.

Caroline, with her blond hair and simple elegance, could be looking at a picture of a man dying, choking on a chicken wing, that she happened to be in, and be more fixated on the pattern of her dress than his last breath! Yet she will hand out a compliment, quick as anything and is veraciously protective of her family.

Susan, is the epitome of kind. Her body may tell the tale of her battles in health, but her stature and refined grace hold many secrets. She has a warmth from her soul that exudes from pores and she is probably the most humbling and honorable woman I have ever met. Brilliant to know what is worth remembering and compassionate to know what is better left in history. She can tell you a story that makes you feel you are walking side by side in her journey.

Shannon is lucky to have her as her Mom and Lily and Morgan are the richest children I know to have that woman as their Grandma and involved in their daily life.

She is the type of person that makes you want to be a better human being.

She is also feisty as heck and the one line zingers that come quietly from the corner, make you wish you could have been a fly on the wall her whole life.

You see the family and know how Shannon became the incredible friend to so many that she is and how those strong women helped mold her into not only the present person but who she will grow into as well.

I could literally sit for hours and listen to all 3 of them tell stories and never run out of patience or interest.

It was getting late. Really late and we needed to hit the hay. We would be leaving in the morning and needed some shut eye. I don't even remember hitting the pillow before I was out!

Dawn... My guess was 3972 not 2972...

See post #461 for my original guess...

Thanks!!! ;)
Thanks for helping me with that!!! I will correct it!! :goodvibes
I called my dh and he says about 2490. So if I loose its his fault.
Perfect and does he get a chore at the house if he screwed up or a huge treat if he is dead on?? :confused3 ;)

Love your update---that drive-thru cigarette window is just too stinkin' funny! :lmao:

The info on KFC was neat---I have a friend whose family owns a couple of franchises. I hardly ever eat there, but YUMMY, I do love those 11 herbs and spices! :)

Excellent update! I wish I had some of that chicken right now! Yummy!

I would like to make a guess at the how many miles you traveled! I will go with 5897 please!

I have been trying to catch up and you sound like you really enjoy these trips. I would like to be included in the guessing game. I can't remember if it is one way or round trip, but I'll post one for each

oneway = 1621miles

round trip = 3232.

Thanks for letting me play

WOW! Awesome update Dawn! I loved the Colonel Sanders story and all the wonderful talk about Shann and family. You truly are a writer - now I really wish I could meet them all too!
Me and my girls would be drooling over any puppy too. I'd still be the one to say no, but they'd be begging!

It was gross, repulsive and as intriguing as a Dr. Phil show! :lmao:

Did you bring any to share?

It's official - and why I asked you guys to guess before I posted too much detail about the trip!

Sneaky....very sneaky!

But don't worry, people (or a person ;) ) are close already...nobody has it exact yet though!! :yay:

Hey Dawn, I make headbands like that! If you're interested, just give me a pm. Usually, I charge about $5 for my pre-made headbands, and $10 for a custom one. My headbands are typically ones with lacy flowers and ribbons (usually for fancier things like prom dress accessories) , but I would be more than happy to make one like the ones you saw at Lynn's for Carsyn. Just let me know the colours and size of flowers she wants and I'll get it done!

I love KFC, but I'm starting to fall for Popeye's. Especially since a new one opened up right across the street from where my family lives!

Mmmmm KFC... I love it, but I'm currently boycotting it. If we ever get that way in the car I would stop at the original, though.

Perfect and does he get a chore at the house if he screwed up or a huge treat if he is dead on?? :confused3 ;)[/QUOTE]

Mine is for round trip. He already has chores so it would be a nice treat.:rotfl2:
