I've seen a lot of pictures of doors with Mickey heads and other items with people's names on them - either a first name or something with a family name on it. Is it very common to put names on your stateroom doors or is that the exception? Is there any type of privacy concern when making a choice either way?

It is quite common to put first and last names on these magnets. I know I have done it. I have had a passing thought regarding if this was a good idea or not.

Well, putting names and room numbers as part of the image may be helpful so that the magnets don't get stolen, or, if moved by others, make them easier to get back.

I usually just put first names, after all Disney is a first name organization. Some people use full names. Others don't worry about it.

My family have been on only one cruise, so my knowledge is limited.
Most stateroom doors did not have decorations at all. So it's not super common.

As for the privacy issue, any decision must be made based on an assessment of risk. I don't see how that entails any risk. It's temporary (not like personalizing your door at home indicating one woman living alone), it's a very low risk place (it's exceedingly rare something untowards happen), and what risk is it to tell your name to anybody, really? I tell people my name all the time when I meet someone new.

We decorated, will decorate next time, and not worry about it. hth!

We made our own magnets and I did NOT use our First or Last Name. For safety reasons, I do not want strangers to know my children's names. You never know who is sailing with you and in my opinion, can never be too careful. Ours say "Mom, Dad, Sister, Brother, Baby Brother" etc. with our favorite characters :)

Hope that Helps.

I do worry about the magnets being stolen (is that a thing?), but I also worry about safety. You're right, we do tell others our names, once we meet them, but I do want to choose to whom I give my name, too.

My older son and DH don't want their names used, but my younger son (naive and trusting fellow that he is), is proud to have people know who we are. I wouldn't put our last name on, for sure. Maybe make up some nicknames?

I contemplated nicknames, but my middle son could not agree on one he liked, so "Brother" it is! Haha

New here--have gone crazy with the magnets as we had none. I've got first names on almost everything to deter theft and our last names are on one magnet. Guess I'll look at other doors near ours and make the decision whether or not to put them all up? I know seeing first and last names is pretty typical though.

I put my name on all my magnets if possible, so they won't be taken. I don't believe there is a safety problem whatsoever. I've been on many cruises and I have rarely, if ever, seen my neighbors. So who would put my name on my door magnet with my face other than my cabin steward who has to learn the names of the people in the cabin they are caring for?

Repeat cruisers are likely the biggest subset of a cruise that decorate their doors. The next subset is people who heard about it from friends or the internet. Over all I would venture that 5% of all occupied rooms have some sort of door decoration. I think it is fun to walk down the halls and get a 'glimpse' into other people you are cruising with. "Wow they have been on 4 cruises!" "They like Goofy, Mickey, and SPider-Man!" There are also some folks who go out of this world with decorating. I have seen wreaths that light up and homemade cannon balls. I have also seen a door that was literally covered in businesscard sized magnets that were movie posters of all Disney films.

Do as little or as much as you like.

In our experience there are a lot of staterooms with magnets/decorations. We have always had stateroom decorations. This started as a way for kids to find their rooms because all the hallways can look the same. Sometimes a door that stands out can be a good navigation point when you get turned around. What you do is a personal choice (names or no names). Putting 1st names is common but the great thing is there are no requirements so you can make your door your own. We have met people on the ship and because I have a unique 1st name if they have seen our door they usually put 2 and 2 together (i.e. "Oh yall are on your honeymoon" or "You have the Alice in Wonderland door"). This should be something fun for you to do, not stressful. Do whatever makes you comfortable. Enjoy!

P.S. We have never had anything stolen off our door.

Yes, it is very common. It's almost as common to use full names or to have a large magnet that says "The Smith Family" and have the names surrounding it, or to have the family name embroidered on a fish extender.

It's a personal preference. Anyone who doesn't wish to put a name on their door, doesn't have to. There are plenty of doors that are undecorated. There are others that have only pictures of the ship, or Disney characters.

There aren't any statistics that I know about regarding criminal victimization of those who put their names on their doors. Doesn't appear to be a widespread problem if it is actually a problem at all. But there are many who prefer not to display their names for whatever reason.

I have to admit that I didn't really understand "putting your name on your magnet might keep it from getting stolen." That would be true if the motivation of the thief was to keep the magnet for themselves. Those who are doing so for the sake of vandalizing something won't be so moved.

We use nicknames. It's the same ones we use for our Magic Bands at WDW :-)

Wait - you put nicknames on your Magic Bands? You mean on your accounts or is there another way to put names on them?

I don't do names, just because I prefer to do characters. Nothing has ever been stolen & if one ever is, I make them myself, so I'm not out a whole lot. We use them as a way for the teens to find the room easier...or really for me to find the room easier

Do you assign one character to a family member or just put characters on your door, in general?

We have done then and used our first names. Anyone on our cruise ship knows my son's name - I call him it regularly! If someone wanted to find out, they would just need to follow us for a few minutes. It's not something I'm concerned about.

This is going to be my first cruise. I ordered a Mickey snorkeling set and Mickey heads with our names on it from Etsy. I thought the kids would get a kick out of our door being decorated. I was sort of thinking the same thing, if someone is near me for just a couple of minutes they will find out the kids names.
