Just booked May 7, 05 Western....since we booked so late, I was only given a GTY for our beloved cat. 9....Can those of you having booked GTY in past, please advise me of the following...

1) Were you upgraded to a higher category?
2) Are the odds higher of getting an upgrade when booking GTY?
3) How soon prior to cruising did you receive a stateroom assignment?
4) was your stateroom number printed on your luggage tags....?

We cruised Sept 11, 2004. We booked a cat 12 GTY. We were upgraded to a Cat 11 but did not know this until we received our doc's. I'm pretty sure our stateroom number was printed on the tags. My only complaint with the GTY was that even though we were upgraded to a cat 11, it must have been the noisiest cat 11 stateroom on the ship....it made me wonder if that was not a coincidence.

I hope you have a great trip and get a great stateroom!

We have had Cat 9's three times and were upgraded to verandahs.....2 of those were GTY and 1 was an assigned room. The cabin number on the assigned room was on our documents but we were told to just use a marker and change it to the new cabin number.

I just happen to call a few weeks before sailings and found out we were upgraded. The others times I saw the change in our online ressie.

Please do not get your hopes up about getting an upgrade...it is random and I do not think one has a better chance depending on how you booked...it really is luck of the draw.

We booked a cat 12 gty this past Sept. 11 (04)...and were upgraded to a cat 10....all of our doc had the room number on it...That was the only way we knew we were upgraded...then days before we sailed we were contacted by our travel agent with an additional suprise...of being upgraded again... to a cat. 8....of course now when we rebooked we had to stick with the Cat 8.

On our last cruise we booked two GTY Category 11 staterooms. When our docs came we had been upgraded to two Category 9 staterooms. I am hoping for the same kind of pixie dust magic or our cruise in June! :)

Does anyone think that it matters if you've paid your room in full? I have a gty 10 and just didn't know if it makes a difference if I go ahead and pay for it in full???

In January, I booked a 4-night cat 9 gty for April 24. Two days ago I called to check on any openings for early dining and by chance asked if we had been assigned a room yet. Yes, we have been placed in cabin 2536, directly under Wavebands. I have read that we could still be changed but I'm just hoping this turns out to be a good, fairly quiet room. :scratchin

In all honesty.....I do not think it really matters who, what, where, when or how you book a cabin and pay it off....it really is random. I do think GTY's in lower cat's like 11 or 12 probably have a higher percentage of upgrades due to the fact that many, many people don't want to spend a lot of money so they book the lower categories....DCL will then move people up from those cats to higher cats to fill them and to make room for more people to book the lower cats.....usually closer to sailing. I hope that makes sense and not too confusing!!!

thanks to all for responses....

I booked cat 9 GTY out of consequence,as cat 9s were sold out-- I am partial to a certain stateroom general location on deck 2-I am concerned about being put in a stateroom under one of the noisy clubs however---- May 7 just became available for FL resident discount, so we went for it.....on all our other cruises we booked cat 9, had a set stateroom...On our last 2, we were upgraded all the way up to cat 5....

I wonder if there's any validity to DCL upgrading you based on number of previous cruises you have been on.....before our 5th and 6th cruises, we were never upgraded...also, there seems to be a run on cat 9s for this particular cruise, so who knows?.....

I don't think it depends on how many cruises you have taken before....many first time cruisers have been upgraded and we have taken 13 DCL cruises, but have not been upgraded on all of them.

I was upgraded last year on my assigned stateroom which I requested the specific room 18 months in advance. We got the upgrade after we got our cruise docs, only days before sailing. We went from a CAT 7 to a CAT 5. Nothing on our 4 previous cruises, but I am hoping for just a little one for this May... :wizard:

I have seen a number of threads on this topic, and no one has ever reported an upgrade from a GTY 5 cabin. I guess that would be pretty unlikely, huh?

I think all would agree that upgrades are given by a necessity by DCL to sell more....to free up additional staterooms high in demand because of the lower pricing i.e. cats 11-9.....I think cat5s and higher are lower in demand b/c of their higher cost...our friends traveling with us on May 7 were able to book a choice location cat 4 family stateroom, while we were only able to secure a cat 9 GTY for same date...

What if your TA booked your cabin with a "group discount rate"? When I talked with DCL they said all cat.9 was gty, but when I made the deposit with TA I was assigned a cabin #. Do they upgrade cabins when they're sold as a group?
