Personal Checks

I haven't had checks in years. I was unaware people still wrote them!:confused3

I would LOVE to get rid of my checkbook entirely, but school is the big roadblock. Do you just send cash for lunch money and field trips, etc? I am always scared to send cash, in case my child loses it or something happens to it...

Or maybe the checks weren't his. :confused3
I really doubt that anyone who is trying to forge checks would ask two more people to come over and help him. I'm sure he was just "insulted" that the OP wanted to see his ID, like she didn't believe him.

Seriously? You thought all checks have just disappeared?

I write checks alot. I have these cool Mickey checks and I want to use them darnit! I always show my id though, can't imagine not!

Unfortunately you cannot take someones word that they are the person on the check. You have to prove they are yours. You can't make an exception for one person. Then other people would say you are discriminating against them for making them show their ID.

I don't doubt that someone would do that at all. What better way to make someone feel they are "making a mistake" than to push the issue and try to get them to give in. People are crafty when trying to pull a fast one.

Someone who had a checkbook that didn't belong to them would be my first guess.

Kudos to you and the people you work with for insisting on the id.

Rules are rules, and people should follow them. I would never accept a check from a customer who refuses to show I.D. Something is just wrong, probably a stolen check book (as a previous poster pointed out).

I never said the OP should take his word for it. I just said what that customer was probably thinking. There are people out there with entitlement issues and don't think the rules apply to them.

So what are you saying, that we should have broken store policy for this guy? :confused3

First of all, the computer needs a DL or state ID number, otherwise the computer can't process the check. Second, who is that embarassed to show ID? And if you are, why not pay cash or use a credit card? Third, why argue with the cashier, and then two managers about it?

What's not to believe the guy about? When I ask for ID it's because I need the number, not because I'm interested in your age or because I don't "believe," that they're your checks.

Sorry, I guess I posted as you were posting this. But your post made it sound like you were agreeing with the customer.

I just got done working in retail management, LOL. At a lovely store that is often mentioned here on the DIS. (most people love this store)

People hardly write checks, thank goodness. It's so time consuming!! They have to write it out, ask me three times to repeat the total, ask the date, ask to spell the store, dig out their ID...wait for me to ask them questions like "is everything on the check correct?" only to have them say no--in which case I give the check back to them ask them to correct it, then we repeat the process...I have to verify the ID, then run the check thru the scanner, wait for the approval, then imprint the check. AHHHHHHHHH then we are done!!!

Credit card---hand to me, I swipe it, grab reciept, have you sign it and I verifty signature. DONE! :)

Seriously, we got only a handful of checks a week.

It's a total PITA at Christmas when the lines are out the door. We are just trying to get people out of there as fast as we can and I can tell other customers in line get aggrivated waiting for someone to dig out that checkbook and begin the process.

BTW, accepting a check isn't a right, companies don't have to accept them and most have a sign somewhere that states that management can deny anyone from writing a check for any reason.

You're lucky, we get quite a few every day, probably at least a dozen per cashier. And you're right it is extremely time consuming. Especially the ones when they don't want to put all their information on.

I get a kick out of these people also. They don't realize how many bad checks a retailer gets and the cost involved. And how dare we question their honesty. The situation that the OP described does sound like a big red flag. If a customer doesn't have an ID with then they usually say that thinking that the check would be cashed anyway.

At the grocery store chain I work for checks have gone way down as credit and debit cards have gone up. I just had to do some research and found that at one of the stores they got 48,000 checks in the last six months so there are still a lot of people using them. This does includes payroll checks that we do cash - with an ID and check cashing fee of course.

2) A guy wrote a check. I asked to see his ID. (Which is what we always do.) He didn't want to show me his ID. So I called a manager over, and he argued with her. She can't do anything either, so they have to call the next high-up manager, who also says he has to show ID. :rolleyes1 Anyway, he would not show ID, and ended up walking out. Who the heck wastes that much time shopping, then arguing, just because they don't want to show ID? :confused3 Plus we had to re-shelf everything he left, so even after he was gone he still wasted our time. :headache:

People can be very odd about ID. I used to work in a retail job for a national chain. Customer wouldn't want to give their ID for Telechek. Also, they wouldn't do it for returns. One time, a lady nearly accussed us of wanting to commit ID theft. :rolleyes1

people are very concerned about identity theft now. While I don't condone anyone giving you a hard time for following store policy, people do have a reason for not wanting to put every bit of their personal info on a check. If they do you now have their, legal name and address, phone number, checking account number and drivers license or social security number. You don't need anything else to steal their id.

this is why I use the debit or credit card, its my personal choice.

But if your store accepts checks, you shouldn't complain about how long they take to process (as long as the customer is supplying all the info and not arguing) maybe they want to avoid using credit. something more of us should probably think about. jmho

I'm not complaining that they do take a long time to process. I was just agreeing with a PP that they do take a long time to process compared to a credit card.

I would expect in the near future that we are going to see more and more stores simply top accepting checks.

Fewer people are writing checks, so it won't alienate that much of their customer base. The losses due to bad checks are much higher than for any other type of payment. It takes much longer for a check to be accepted in payment than it is for a credit card, debit card or cash.

I agree-if you're writing a check then you're going to have to provide all sorts of personal information. Name, address, phone number and DL# in most cases. Where I worked no longer were taking DL but we do verify picture ID.

Just because I'm using my "credit card" doesn't mean it is one. It's my Visa Check Card...(as is w/most people I saw using cards). So spare me the JMHO use your credit card less talk.

As for if I don't like people writing checks for the store not to accept them, I think that time is coming!! I don't care if you write a check, I process all transactions the same, with a smile on my face and making sure you are happy with your purchase. BUT the people in line behind you don't like it. They complain to me about it! (in which case I will defend you, BTW).

Why would you not accept the cheque with yesterday's date? It is perfectly legal and valid. The fact that your internal process puts today's date on it as well is completely unimportant. I don't understand why you or your company would be so pedantic?

A few years back, I went to a bank to cash a check. I had ran out of the house with out my ID. Lucky for me I hadn't taken my travel bag out of my car and my passport was in it. So when the guy asked for ID, I gave him my passport. He looked so confused. He opened it up and looked at it. Handed it back to me and said he had to have a government issued photo ID before he could cash my check. WTH?? I told him that is a U.S. Issued passport!! He said he had never seen one before and needed something else. I told him no he didn't and give me my check back! I was freaking steaming!!
