I haven't had checks in years. I was unaware people still wrote them!

I really doubt that anyone who is trying to forge checks would ask two more people to come over and help him. I'm sure he was just "insulted" that the OP wanted to see his ID, like she didn't believe him.Or maybe the checks weren't his.![]()
Seriously? You thought all checks have just disappeared?I haven't had checks in years. I was unaware people still wrote them!![]()

Someone who had a checkbook that didn't belong to them would be my first guess.
Kudos to you and the people you work with for insisting on the id.
I never said the OP should take his word for it. I just said what that customer was probably thinking. There are people out there with entitlement issues and don't think the rules apply to them.Unfortunately you cannot take someones word that they are the person on the check. You have to prove they are yours. You can't make an exception for one person. Then other people would say you are discriminating against them for making them show their ID.
So what are you saying, that we should have broken store policy for this guy?I really doubt that anyone who is trying to forge checks would ask two more people to come over and help him. I'm sure he was just "insulted" that the OP wanted to see his ID, like she didn't believe him.
Sorry, I guess I posted as you were posting this. But your post made it sound like you were agreeing with the customer.I never said the OP should take his word for it. You're lucky, we get quite a few every day, probably at least a dozen per cashier. And you're right it is extremely time consuming. Especially the ones when they don't want to put all their information on.Seriously, we got only a handful of checks a week.
2) A guy wrote a check. I asked to see his ID. (Which is what we always do.) He didn't want to show me his ID. So I called a manager over, and he argued with her. She can't do anything either, so they have to call the next high-up manager, who also says he has to show ID.Anyway, he would not show ID, and ended up walking out. Who the heck wastes that much time shopping, then arguing, just because they don't want to show ID?
Plus we had to re-shelf everything he left, so even after he was gone he still wasted our time.

I'm not complaining that they do take a long time to process. I was just agreeing with a PP that they do take a long time to process compared to a credit card. But if your store accepts checks, you shouldn't complain about how long they take to process (as long as the customer is supplying all the info and not arguing) maybe they want to avoid using credit. something more of us should probably think about.
