Everyday at my job people pay with checks. Usually it's not a problem, but yesterday I had two "problems" with people when they paid.

1) (And this is the lesser offense.) I had a lady write me a check, and she dated it 5/3. This was on 5/4, so I asked her to please change it. She was like "it doesn't matter if it's yesterday's date on there, you can still cash it." Yes, we could still "cash it," but, the computer prints the date on the back of the check after we process it, and I could get in trouble if the dates don't match. Anyway, she decided she'd rather argue about it for a few minutes until she finally did change the date.

2) A guy wrote a check. I asked to see his ID. (Which is what we always do.) He didn't want to show me his ID. So I called a manager over, and he argued with her. She can't do anything either, so they have to call the next high-up manager, who also says he has to show ID. :rolleyes1 Anyway, he would not show ID, and ended up walking out. Who the heck wastes that much time shopping, then arguing, just because they don't want to show ID? :confused3 Plus we had to re-shelf everything he left, so even after he was gone he still wasted our time. :headache:

Someone who had a checkbook that didn't belong to them would be my first guess.

Kudos to you and the people you work with for insisting on the id.

my thoughts too! Why would you be out and about (probably driving)and not have ID with you?

I used to work in a college bookstore and we had an older woman come in every single semester who would try to write a check and refuse us any form of ID. She would argue it, hold up the line for at least 10 minutes, and then leave her stuff behind the counter, only to come back for it later paying by credit card. I mean, it's no skin off our backs -- we were being paid for our time there. But what a complete and total waste of time for her. :sad2: I know that she didn't have a car, so she had to walk every time this happened. :confused3

Or someone who didn't have ID with him.

WOW do people still carry and write checks.

But it's better to be diligent from the beginning and waist time ,then to be backtracking and be out of your product and money on the rearend.

Good for your company if more acted like this there would be a bit less identity theft

I'm pretty sure he had ID with him. I asked him if I could see it, he said no. He said he didn't want to show it, because it was an embarassment to show ID. :confused3

That's exactly how I feel. I'm getting paid the same amount just standing there listening to someone whine about why they don't want to show ID, as I am for when I'm ringing people up, so it doesn't matter, (money-wise,) to me. But it was annoying, and there was a line, (which kept on getting longer,) just beacause he wouldn't show ID.

Plus he made a point of telling the people behing him that the line was being held up because we wouldn't take his check. :rolleyes1 Luckily, the people behind him had common sense, and knew it wasn't my fault.

Now that's just weird, but there are a lot of weird people out there.

I despise writing checks. I almost never do it. (I think I only write them to the school and to DD's piano teacher, as they don't take mastercard - lol) I don't even carry the checkbook with me anymore.

Anyway, people who DO write checks should be well aware that NO ONE takes a check without seeing ID! I haven't found anyplace that does, anyway. If he doesn't want to show ID, he should use a credit or debit card or go to the ATM to get cash. Problem solved. Unless of course, the checkbook was stolen ;)

People are different. I used to have a lady that refused to show her ID too. She was older and felt it was an insult to have anyone know her age. She actually had a letter written by her bank and gave to us. My manager made an exception for her. It is always crappy when someone refuses to follow our policy. I always try to explain that those are the rules and I don't make them. However, there have been days when I forgotten my ID wanted to write a check. People have their reasons and like you said you get paid either way so I always try not to let it bother me...

I don't write checks usually either, since it just takes so much time. To write the check, have them see my ID, (I don't mind people knowing my age, but I hate my picture, ;) ) that it's so much easier to just use my debit card. I don't get why people like that don't just use a card, or cash. Though I get why they wouldn't want to carry around that much cash.

Or maybe the checks weren't his. :confused3
That much fuss and waste of time, something wasn't right.
It's nice to see your manager backing you up on this one.

I think it is so ignorant for people to act like that. When I worked at a bank, people used to get all in a tissy when I asked for their ID before cashing a check for them. These were people I had never seen before. I guess they would be happier if I had cashed their checks for someone else :confused3

I do not understand why people object to this. I often see people getting upset when asked to see IDs when using credit cards. I wouldn't care if they asked to see mine when I use my debit card. That's a small inconvenience compared to the inconvenience of identidy theft.

I also don't understand why people don't sign their credit cards. It is a lot easier to steal a credit card, sign it and use it as their own than to use one already signed. That's one reason why the credit card companies instruct you to sign it.

The company I work for (retail furniture and appliances) has 34 stores. We get 50 bounced checks in an average week. :sad2: We've had to file criminal charges against some people to get paid. Some of our managers have simply stopped accepting checks as payment. It's cash or charge, period. And the ones that do accpt checks require a D/L or other photo ID with it.

I do'nt understand why someone who doesn't have the money would go buy a living room set and pay by check. I can understand an occasional math error (those are the people who come to us to make good--we don't ahve to chase them down) but we've had people bounce both the d/p and delivery checks!

If, and when, you do decide to show ID. Do not get mad if we still don't accept your check because your ID expired two years ago. :headache:

And another thing, when we need your phone number on the check, we need your phone number on the check. If it's not on there, I'm going to get in trouble, and I'm not going to get in trouble just because you don't want to put it on there.

Anyway, people who DO write checks should be well aware that NO ONE takes a check without seeing ID! I haven't found anyplace that does, anyway.

I was amazed when I moved to Virginia to see that there are stores here that will take checks without ID. I have seen it several times at both mom and pop stores and larger chains. I see a lot more people writing checks here than I saw in Florida. In FL, you practically have to get a DNA test before writing a check to any store.
