Peopleofwalmart.com

So I don't want to be a buzz kill - I have a sense of humor. I chuckled at some of the pictures on the website. On one hand I believe that people who dress outlandishly want attention but on the other hand I don't feel comfortable mocking other people. Who am I to judge?

I looked at the Facebook page for this website and was saddened to see that most photos people (ie fans of the website) posted, were of overweight people, not particularly unusually dressed people, just heavy.

I can't get on board with anything that is created solely to mock others. I can't imagine living my life thinking I am so much better than other people. If we were all the same, how boring would that be. I have run to the walmart looking like a wreck wearing grubby sweatpants, whatever. So it is just as likely I could have ended up on this site.

I pass no judgement on those who like the site, I just don't feel right about enjoying or advocating it.
I agree. I have a great sense of humor too, but I can't make fun of people I don't know, and sites like that, which only exist to make fun of others, disqust me.

I hate to say it, but most of the people pictured on PeopleOfWalMart would probably be psyched if they knew we were all sitting around looking & talking about them!

 Whoo-hoo, look at me, I'm famous!

Yeah, somehow I doubt that. Especially the women who have on makeup, etc. They most likely were trying to look appealing. I doubt they'd be thrilled people are making fun of them.

I think the bingo card is appalling. The missing limb block is only one of many that are just plain cruel.

Some of the pictures on the site are funny, yes, but when you stop to think they're real people with feelings/problems/family - not so funny anymore.

I was wondering this too - because I think at Disney, for example, when you buy your park tickets there is small print that says they have the right to use your image in marketing materials, etc without your permission and without compensating you. I would think a company the size of Wal Mart MIGHT have the same thing, but I don't know.

And my 2 cents - count me in as another who doesn't find this funny. I've been on the receiving end of humilation in my life; the worst is when people are making fun of you and you don't know it. There's the chance that these folks might find it funny, but you never know.

In my college photojournalism class we were taught that if a person was out in public, we did not need their permission to take and print their picture. Of course that was a while ago :rolleyes1, so laws may have changed.

I guess I'm an old fuddy duddy. I don't see the humor in making fun of others. It is true that some of the people were odd by my standards. That doesn't give me the right to make fun of them. I think this is just another sad commentary on life today.

How funny, however some people need to get a life. Next one might be Disney World LOL.

I don't like the site because it is mean and ugly. Making fun of people (mullet, fat, old, etc.) is just opening up the doors to bad karma. We are all the same, as people, and I have no right to make fun of anyone.

This site is nothing but sad. Its mean and it makes people enjoy acting mean.
No wonder kids are so mean these days....:rolleyes1
Apple
Tree
and all that.

Not sure if this mentioned because I didn't read all of the posts but when I was listening to radio yesterday morning. US99.5 Ramblin Ray and Lisa Dent was talking about that site and they said they heard that it has crashed due to so many viewers. I was surprised to see this thread and the pictures.

But any idiots that have the time and no life and do something like this should seek help. JMHO.

I am not that easily offended but I find the Bingo card to be repulsive. I didn't look at the peopleofwalmart site.

Talk about having fun at the expense of others. :sad1:

from a loving Mom who has a child with a missing limb

My thoughts exactly. It can't be justified by saying "they asked for it." Mocking someone's appearance is just mean-spirited and immature. My children know better - sad that adults think it's okay.

I agree. Just another example of cyber bullying.

Usually satire consists of somone mocking a "target" (politician, celebrity or criminal). When mocking innocent, everyday people becomes a sport, that's just plain sad. But if you find it funny, that's your business. I know that life can turn on you at any moment and you can lose it all in the blink of an eye. Maybe one day you maybe shopping at Wal Mart because that's all that you can afford.

I find websites like that, appalling and disgusting. That's just me, though.

I have shopped at Wal Mart...didn't make the website...yet:lmao::rotfl2:

I don't like walmart and I haven't set foot in one for a long time... years and years.

The last time I shopped at walmart, I wrote a check for $200 something and it was an absolutely huge hassle at the register. A manager had to come and approve it or some foolish thing. For crying out loud, I spend that and more on groceries weekly. That just ended it for me, its gross, clogged with too much stuff, no walking room... single file only, I really don't like it.

As far as the pics/website I don't make fun of people either but I DO get disgusted with people that let themselves hang out all over.

Even shorts in public bother me esp. on a heavier person. I saw a young girl, 17 or so, not too long ago with very short shorts on (and a skimpy tank top.) When she bent to sit down in the waiting room we were in, it was very scary...there just wasn't enough fabric between her butt area and the chair.

Now I understand how ecoli winds up on chairs....blechhhhhhh not to mention potential health hazard for her and others.

I shop at Wal-Mart but I doubt that I'd be of interest to people who make fun of others. I'm pretty ordinary.

I like our local Wal-Mart. It's clean and big and many of the employees have been there for ages. I see nothing funny about any of this but to each their own.

Took a peek at the first couple of pages before I got bored and left. :sad2:

Add me to the list of fuddies and duddies; I think this is one of the most degrading and insulting things I've seen, and this is coming from someone who was degraded and insulted right out of school in the 11th grade so many years ago.

I do try to make an effort to cover up my fatness (you're welcome, to all of those who can't stand the sight of overweight people ) But I *certainly* don't believe that I'm in any kind of a position to judge others. Don't like what I'm seeing? I look away; certainly not going to judge and vilify someone else for their own concept of what's "normal" and "right".

My husband and I were wondering about the Wal-mart reaction as well. It's apparently a big enough news story, I've been waiting to see if they respond to it or hope it all just dies down.

I've got a friend that works at Wal-mart as department manager. I asked him about it. He said he hasn't heard anything from the company, but they do have a no picture taking policy in the store. If an assosciate sees a person taking photos in the store, they can ask them to stop. If they continue, that person can be asked to leave. I forsee a big blow up coming for these guys who thought this was an "innocent" little joke.

I wouldn't be so sure. The way you've worded what the department manager said, it's only a matter that folks can be asked to stop taking pictures, and be asked to leave. They can probably even ban people from the premises, if they can identify who they are, and then serve legal papers to that effect. However, that's an "if". And I suspect, from the manner in which these peopel regard Wal-Mart, they really only care to go to Wal-Mart to feed their website; if they cannot do that, then they probably wouldn't care about being banned from the store.

So, in terms of "a big blow up coming for these guys", it really comes back to whether or not there is a law against what they're doing, specifically.

Finding it acceptable to mock and laugh at people (especially when they are clearly less fortunate than you) is not a lesson I want to teach my child.

How do you know they're "less fortunate"?
The stripper unloading groceries looked good to go.

:thumbsup2 Exactly. There were a few pictures that I looked at and really had to wonder what people thought was so strange about them. (and that probably says a lot about my character...LOL) But otherwise, many of these are people who are obviously looking to call attention to themselves. Less fortunate? I definitely wouldn't automatically assume that...
