I think some members of my family might be on there. Heck, I know some of them qualify for Jerry Springer so why not this? :rotfl2:

I went to school with a girl who ended up on Jenny Jones. I had just given birth to our oldest, was nursing him in front of the tv, couldn't find the remote and JJ is what the station went to. I kept going "that looks like ____" They put her first name up and I freaked, then the age and was like OMG. She was on there because her boyfriend at the time decided national tv was the place to break it to her and two other women that he was cheating on all of them. I told my cousin about this and she was like "that's Mr. ____, he's a teacher at my school!"

So I don't want to be a buzz kill - I have a sense of humor. I chuckled at some of the pictures on the website. On one hand I believe that people who dress outlandishly want attention but on the other hand I don't feel comfortable mocking other people. Who am I to judge?

I looked at the Facebook page for this website and was saddened to see that most photos people (ie fans of the website) posted, were of overweight people, not particularly unusually dressed people, just heavy.

I can't get on board with anything that is created solely to mock others. I can't imagine living my life thinking I am so much better than other people. If we were all the same, how boring would that be. I have run to the walmart looking like a wreck wearing grubby sweatpants, whatever. So it is just as likely I could have ended up on this site.

I pass no judgement on those who like the site, I just don't feel right about enjoying or advocating it.

Well said indeed. Like I said, some people have no life. The people who dress like on some of those pics, well, they do it to themselves, but you're so right, making fun on overweight people, or traditions, culture, etc, is just lame.

That's a great site, Walmart can be pretty scary. I hate going to the store and very rarely go into one. Some of the people in there scare me. :scared1:

Speaking of the people at Wally World, did you hear about this story? http://www.postchronicle.com/news/strange/article_212254499.shtml Unbelievable! :furious::eek::sad2:

Well, we see scary people almost everywhere these days, even at Disney and we keep going there :confused3I have no problem going to wal mart, I go there, get my stuff and don't really care what people are wearing or doing, and I respect those who hate the store.

The mullet trend ended a LOOOONG time ago. Heck, it wasn't even that cool when it was cool. The truth hurts! Think of this site as a public service. If it can stop just one person from sporting a mullet, it has done its job.;)

I don't like mullets either, never had, but who am i to judge if others like it, who cares.

I pass no judgement on those who like the site, I just don't feel right about enjoying or advocating it.
I resonate with what you're saying here. I think that there is even a deeper issue. I think it is legitimate to refer to Wal-Mart as a token of certain characteristics, with regard to its operating principles, its success, its average customer, and the ramifications of their choices, reasonable or otherwise, on all of us. For example, there is a legitimate point to be made about where Wal-Mart sources its products, the comparative quality of its offerings, its compensation and benefits for its employees, etc. Wal-Mart does represent specific things, and I think that the extent to which many find a site like People of Wal-Mart acceptable as humor (and like you, I'm not saying it is or is not acceptable) has got to be, to some extent, attributable to these dichotomies of reality that Wal-Mart represents:

  • Successful but to some extent due to strategies and tactics that some people find objectionable;
  • Affordable but to some extent due to strategies and tactics that some people believe are a depressive force on innovation and rarefied quality;
  • An employer of many but to some extent due to strategies and tactics that some people sacrifice a fewer number of, but arguably better, jobs.
I think Wal-Mart is as much a token of something far bigger than most folks allow themselves to believe, just as McDonald's was in the 1960s (as a force for changing the way Americans eat, arguably not for the better). I could easily rattle off another half dozen such tokens that came in from underneath to have a not-very-much-talked-about-until-later impact on America. Many of them were frequent contexts for ridicule, perhaps a nervous reaction to what people had a feel for what was happening under the surface.

And to be clear, not making a judgment (at least not in this case) with regard to "good" or "bad".

And I don't apologize for being a buzz-kill. :goodvibes

I think I know some of those people. LOL But I've got to say that don't touch the baby sign is really a great idea. I cover my lo completely when we go to any store because people seem to think babies are free range.

I don't like the site because it is mean and ugly. Making fun of people (mullet, fat, old, etc.) is just opening up the doors to bad karma. We are all the same, as people, and I have no right to make fun of anyone.

I think it is funny. I hate shopping at our local WalMart. I always feel like I'm going to be mugged on the way in or out.

I just saw some WalMart propaganda with the CEO (or some other high up) that talked about how clean and tidy the stores are etc etc. Ours are always nasty.

Great site really. If you dress/act funny, people will laugh & poke fun.
Look how wildly popular America Funniest Videos are. I cringe at some of the "accidents" and pratfalls on there, which obviously HURT.
Yet, I still laugh!

This site is nothing but sad. Its mean and it makes people enjoy acting mean.
No wonder kids are so mean these days....:rolleyes1
Apple
Tree
and all that.

Not sure if this mentioned because I didn't read all of the posts but when I was listening to radio yesterday morning. US99.5 Ramblin Ray and Lisa Dent was talking about that site and they said they heard that it has crashed due to so many viewers. I was surprised to see this thread and the pictures.

But any idiots that have the time and no life and do something like this should seek help. JMHO.

I"ll fess up, I was the bottom right corner on the Bingo Card the other day. Ran out of weed-eater string & wasn't gonna shower to get more(wasn't Sat. nite anyway).

Monica- Can I print that card? My buddy's a screenprinter and has the same warped sense of humor. Don't need a lawsuit, KWIM?!
