People smoking in line

Why is a negative visual description of ANYBODY necessary? What is wrong with using one's imagination? Frankly, I don't think exbjd's question went far enough.

The pregnant poster above is well within her rights to ask smokers not to smoke near her (or to find a Cast Member to do it) as long as she's not, even inadvertently, in a smoking area.

The poster above who mentions that maps indicate where smoking is permitted may not be aware that NOT all Guests use maps, or are aware that smoking is restricted to certain areas outdoors (and none indoors).

ewwww....Cancer sticks.......
Ewwww.... judgmental post.... ;)

I actually witnessed one guy, who was smoking while walking the World Showcase promenade, be told by a CM about WDW policy, etc, and the smoker was coming across to the CM that he didn't understand English. The CM did the 'no smoking here' gesture thing and the guy finally put out his smoke. Okay..............you guessed it..............we were right behind them when he started telling someone in his group that "it works everytime"...pretending to not understand that there are designated smoking areas in WDW!!! As a smoker I was soooooooooo pissed at this guy I wanted to smack him in the head!!!:teeth: Of course he lit up another smoke within minutes!!! And, no.....we didn't say anything to him because he seemed to be the type who would just scoff at you anyways!!! Not exactly coming to WDW to brawl with anyone!!! :guilty:

Just got back from a day at Disney-MGM Studios and have two disgusting stories to tell about some inconsiderate people.

1) There was a long line at the ice cream stand between ToT and RnR. Some gritty lowlife was smoking in that line. I told a CM and they put a stop to it.

2) Waiting in line for LMA some guy lit up a cigarette right despite being surrounded by hundreds of kids and other people. He even had a very young daughter and some other kid with him. I asked him to put it out just after his wife had asked for a cigarette too. He gave me a funny look so I told him it's park policy and that WDW offers smoking areas if he really had to smoke.

I just don't get it. How can people be so inconsiderate?

This is absolute proof that smoking really does kill your brain cells. :smokin:

I am not a smoker, but on behalf of smokers everywhere I have to say that in my experience there are just as many inconsiderate jerks among non-smokers as there are among smokers, such as foul talkers, litter bugs,
line cutters, snot slingers, those who don't flush toilets, those who let their
kids run wild, those who think rules do not apply to them, those who like to judge others without knowing anything about them, etc. etc.

I have found that most smokers ARE considerate of others. They weren't very visible, though, because they were IN the smoking areas. Only the ones who are not get noticed.

Agree. I am shocked by litterbugs and the others you point out, too. But people smoking where they shouldn't are not only annoying, but they also pose a health risk.

Saw a CM enforcing the no-smoking policy outside of Exp Everest this weekend. She was good, the smoker questioned it, she told him policy was printed on all the maps, tix, etc. Nice to see, boy they have a tough job dealing with John Q. Public every day.

Good for that CM!

My DH and I are both smokers and we are always commenting on how nice it is that WDW (A) offers plenty of designated smoking areas and (B) makes them as pleasant as possible..meaning usually in a nice, shaded area, seating and ashtrays, etc. We LOVE the break!!! IMHO, I think that it is brilliant strategy on their part because I'm sure there would be ALOT more smokers lighting up outside these areas if they were located far out of the way or in a rotten environment, too few, etc.

Nonetheless, we would never dream of lighting up anywhere but in a smoking area!!! I don't even like to walk around 'outside' the parks and smoke (heading to bus area, etc.) as I am very aware of how unpleasant it is forthe majority of people!!

Thank you for your courtesy :)

I quit smoking 5 years ago and I completely agree with you! I watched once as a lady let her dog poop on the walking path by my house and then attempted to walk away. We have strict doggy poo laws in Calgary and I handed her a poop bag and said "here is a bag for your waste since you dont have one" she was so mad but she picked it up. This is a walkway used a lot by moms with strollers and young children...yucky! eh!

Way to go!

I'm a smoker and use the designated areas(some of which are quite nice, especially in AK). I've seen those that smoke where they want, but that has nothing to do with being a smoker. This is a case of where people have no common sense and think of themselves only. Banning smoking will not get rid of the problem. You will still have people who smoke, cut lines, throw garbage, and pretty much do what they want.

Actually, banning smoking WILL get rid of the problem. :goodvibes I am an ex-smoker, and I remember VERY well that people used to be able to smoke in hospitals, grocery stores, offices, etc. Smoking was banned, and guess what! People do not smoke in hospitals, grocery stores, offices, etc.

The vast, vast majority of people are NON-smokers. Disney could go a LONG way toward mitigating the aggravation of us non-smokers by posting large signs at the entrance to the parks along the lines of, "This park is non-smoking. Smoke in designated areas only." The only place I have ever seen smoking/non-smoking areas mentioned is on the maps, and how many people notice these designations?

Re: resorts, anyone can smoke anywhere outside. POP Century food court and pool area has turned into one big smokers' den. Doesn't Disney realize they are alienating the non-smokers (again, the vast majority of their customers) by allowing people to smoke anywhere outdoors that they desire?? You cannot eat outside or lounge at the pool without smelling smoke.

Unless WDW enforces designated smoking areas (which they need to create at the resorts, instead of making the entire grounds a de facto smoking area), I think they will need to just ban smoking. Apparently it's easier to ban it than to enforce smoking areas.

As a former smoker who tried to be considerate, sometimes you just forget where you are. When I was approached and asked to stop, I would always put it out-even in a place where smoking was allowed- but I will say that how fast I did it had a lot to do with the attitude of the person that asked. If I see someone smoking at WDW outside of the approved areas, I'll try to approach them politely and direct them to the closest approved area. I've gotten bitten a couple of times, but most of the time the smoker is just unaware that there are such areas or just automatically lit up not thinking about where they were.

As for the littering-that makes me NUTS! I saw someone drop a used kleenex less than 3 steps from a garbage can!! There's got to be a new definition of lazy and inconsiderate for someone that would do that. Bravo to you for getting that person to clean up their mess!!!

I don't want to see smoking banned - but - It would be nice if they could advertise their smoking policy and designated areas more and adopt a no tolerance policy on offensive acts.

Way back when - I used to work in a seasonal water park/ski resort. They had a ZERO tolerance policy for many things. If you were caught doing anything against the rules - smoking in non designated areas, goofing off in an unsafe way, being disrespectful, littering etc- when caught the first time they explained what you did wrong and wrote a big D on your ski tag or bracelet in permanent marker. If you were caught doing ANYTHING again - and an employee saw your big D - that was their indication that you then lost your privledges. Your tag or bracelet would be taken away on your second round which allowed you access to the park but not access to any chair lifts or rides. It would be harder for Disney to do something like this unfortunately unless they tried marking park tickets.

FYI - The big D stood for "dummy" LOL! It originated in the summer season when the lifeguards got tired of pulling out the same people over and over again - we used to get truckoads of kids from the city - many that didn't know how to swim - didn't stop them - they would go on all the water slides and in the wave pool thinking it was no big deal as the lifeguards would just "save" them anyway :confused3

I am a smoker. DH is a smoker. We ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS go to the smoking areas to smoke.

There has been THREE incidents where non-smokers were sitting where we were smoking and ASKED US to put out our cigarettes! :confused3 That was outside the POC ride....and I looked at that man and said "Sir, you are sitting in the smoking section"...he took out his park map and looked and then gathered his stuff and huffed away after calling us STUPID SMOKERS. :furious:

Ok...yes, it may be stupid to smoke, but Its my business, not his, and he should of paid attention to where he was sitting. Now, if I was sitting in a NON SMOKING section puffing away, then he had every right to tell us to stop smoking.

The other 2 incidents were in Epcot and the other people gave us dirty looks, started "coughing" and asked us to put cigarettes out, I replied, "this is the smoking section...you might need to leave with that cough you have going on". They left. And the other was just dirty looks at me and DH and then they looked on maps, and quietly said..."oh , we are in the smoking section...lets leave".

So, not just smokers do the unthinkable! :thumbsup2

If CMs would do their jobs and enforce the rules, then us "smokers" would not get a bad rap all the time. I have seen plenty of CMs walk right by someone who was smoking in a non smoking area, littering, running fast, etc. I dont think WDW needs to be non smoking ...the rules just needs to be more enforced.

:confused3 Don't you think cancer stinks?

Second hand smoke causes cancer.

CANCER STINKS (that's a nice word ;) ) indeed!

ETA::::

Although I will add--Smokers should have a designated area where they can smoke without being harassed. Sad as it is, I could not see my grandmother going even an hour without having a cigarette :guilty:

I have seen CM's at WDW asking people to move to a smoking area, so I think they are pretty good about trying to keep the rules enforced. I have also personally asked a CM to ask someone to please stop smoking in an outdoor eating area where we were having lunch, and they did so right away.

I am sure there are some people who don't realize that they are only supposed to smoke in designated areas, and I also believe there are some that just don't care. Most smokers are great about using the designated areas, but the ones that don't are the ones who give smokers a bad rep. FWIW, I don't see as many people smoking outside the designated areas at WDW as I have at some other parks, and believe me I notice because unexpectedly coming upon a bunch of smoke and inhaling a big whiff of it triggers an asthma attack for me.

Here's the thing: Non-smokers think they rule the world, and that they are better than smokers. I'm not a smoker, but it disgusts me how self-righteous the non-smokers are.

It'S Disney World-there are a ton of kids there on any given day. It should be NON-SMOKING.

They recently switched their food offerings to a more healthy selectionf or children but have done nothing about the smoking issue. :confused3 Doesn't really make sense.

Oh, the kids argument. Lovely.
