My DS and DDIL are coming home from Alaska (Air Force) for Thanksgiving and would like to get a corgi pup while in Iowa to take back. What can Corgi owners tell them about the breed? TIA!!!

Aren't those the same dogs the Queen has? They seem like pretty easy going animals.

I love my Corgi's!!!! We are horse people and we show a lot and our Corgi's are there with us all the time. They love to travel they are excellent with kids great around the horses and cattle (we have both)! Not to fond of cat's but our guy's have been taught and they know not to chase the barn kittie's. We have one our girl romy who is picky about her food dish and doesnt like when anybody else eats out of it,but our toddler from crawling age could stick his hand in her bowl and she wouldnt do anything she would sit and patiently wait for him to crawl away! For a full size dog with miniature dog legs they can run and they love it. I love watching them run across the field playing with my DH's labs with thier fat corgi butts waddling side to side :rotfl: You have to be carefull with corgis because they can get very fat!!! And it causes major joint problem's. Our girl recently tipped the scales at 39 lbs.!!! So she has special food now. They are affectionate and loving excellent geese chasers! They keep our fields clear of geese. They are great watch dogs too we know when someone is coming they bark before the labs even know what is going on. We love our corgis they are awesome little dogs and absolutely adorable we will always have corgis in our lives! And every one I know that has a corgi feels the same!

Corgi's are great dogs. They are from the herding group. There are Pembrokes (no tail) and Cardigan's (have a tail). Go to the AKC website for more information on the breed (links provided below). If you find a breeder, check them out thoroughly. Ask them questions like where to the pups live? Are they exposed to other family members? Are one or both parents on site? Can you meet one or both parents? What type of guarantee does the pup have? Not sure if they are prone to any particular disease. The AKC website should be able to give you that information. When DH and I bred dachshunds, the pups slept in our bedroom in a puppy pen. They were exposed to the other dogs in the house. When they were older, they would sit in our laps and were held and socialized as much as possible.

That's Milo. :) He's 5 years old. That picture is from 2003...he's put on a few pounds since then. LOL!

We love Milo, he's a great dog, but I will NEVER get another Corgi. He sheds A LOT. I just brushed him this afternoon and he turned my black pants white! Milo has been great with our DS. He gets a bit grumpy when he's sleepy and you can't mess with his paws (Our vet or Pets Mart has to clip his nails. He sheds A LOT! Milo is on special hypo-allergenic food because he was having tummy issues. The food has fixed it, though. Not sure if that's a Corgi thing or a Milo thing. He sheds A LOT! He loves to play, but only for short periods of time...then he gets tired. It's pretty funny actually. He's a fun dog. Have I mentioned that he sheds A LOT! He's pretty protective of our home, and the silliest things scare him, but I wouldn't really call him a barker. He's definitely quirky! Oh yeah...one more thing, he sheds A LOT!

I'm Skuttle's hubby. I think she forgot to mention one thing. HE SHEDS A LOT!! other than that he's a goof.

We have a Corgi mix that we rescued from a local shelter. He is a great dog. He is very smart and has a wonderful disposition. He learns tricks really easy and loves to do things that make us laugh. He loves attention.

I agree that they do shed. Ours is only 1/2 corgi and he sheds like crazy. Otherwise, I don't have any complaints. Everything else about him is just wonderful!!!

We also have a Corgi -- we love her!!! She is five years old now and was Very easy to train!! (We had a Beagle before that wouldn't listen & loved to dig!!) She has been wonderful with our three kids and is always ready to play. I agree they do shed, but ours isn't too bad -- I just do a quick sweep around the edges of the wood floor every other day.

I would definately get another Corgi :sunny:

Our corgi Teddy, who is now 13, has always been a pretty good dog, but he is still fairly high-strung (i.e., he quivers quite a bit). That may contribute to his liveliness, given his advanced age, and he isn't overweight. He runs a fair amount in the yard and is always anxious to get in and out of the door in the morning. He will also still occasionally play Frisbee.

I think he sheds a bit less than our German Shepherd Dog did. He is better as a single dog than when we had three dogs (lost the other two to health problems) because he didn't like being dominated by the younger GSD. He is crate-trained and has always been fairly content to sleep there. I would get another corgi, but might consider getting a female next time.

The kids are learning alot from your responses. Thanks so much! Anyone else?

Hi I have a corgi! This is Lobo

He was a baby in this picture, he is now just over 2 years old. He is 28 lbs. He is a great doggie! We have two cats and while he tries to herd them, it's play to them and they don't mind too much. He is crate trained and he runs in his crate at night when it's time for bed. He loves walks and he loves to run and play fetch. Fetch is his favorite game of all time!! He is very loving and very in turn to your emotions. He is great with kids. He will sit and let kids pet him all day long, they stick their little fingers in his mouth and he's ok with it. He has one bone he's got very very aggressive over, we don't give that to him anymore!! He has a senstive tummy, I feed him Nature's Balance from PetCo and he's fine. He can't have too many treats but we monitor them and he's ok. He HATES having his paws touched...it's a major chore. I do it myself sometimes but I try to schedule the vet and PetSmart visits at those times. House training for SOME REASON has been a little bit of an issue and we can't figure out why. I think part is still puppiness. He gets super excited when he sees his leash and if he is too full he will leak. Same when someone knew comes over. Part of it is puppy excitiment but I am not sure. He is a bit high energy. He doesn't sit and cuddle on the couch ever. He will fall asleep at the end of the day on the floor but as soon as you move or get up he is up and at it again. He gets decent night time in the crate b/c I think it's the olny time he sleeps especially on the the weekend. He is great at entertaining himself and he has two toys he LOVES and he plays with them forever if no one will throw them for him.

Honestly, he is a great dog. I am so glad we have him. It's easier when we had a house and once we buy a house or settle again, I want to get a second one for him. Part of me sometimes wonders about other breeds though... a dog that will cuddle on your lap and stuff. Corgi's are very very energetic....

Oh, I don't find the shedding an issue. I have two cats, one long haired and they are MUCH worse. We give baths every so often and brush every week or two and he's fine.

I just wanted to stress too please find a reputable breeder. Corgis have fallen into the back yard breeder trap too. We have had them since I was a young child and I am 34 now, they are energetic because they are a herding breed but when they mature they do become cuddly. I have had 2 in my life that were just not cuddler's but all the other's have been very affectionate and loving. Corgis can also have skin issues and allergies and stomach issues that is why I stress a GOOD BREEDER. These are not inherent issues that you should see in corgis a well bred corgi is a very sturdy healthy little dog the only thing that with any corgi (regardless of breeding) is they can get overweight which can then cause joint problems. They do shed but we have not had one yet that was a bad shedder we have no corgi tumbleweeds in our home but we do have lab tumbleweeds and boy can they shed!! A well bred corgi too is not cheap they are not a 3 to 400 hundred dollar dog if you found one in that price range then look elsewhere. Good luck
