Why should the commercial be anything other than a fit woman using something to stay fit?

Exactly. But, everything has to some big social justice message. There just has to be a ‘victim’.

I am sitting here busting out laughing thinking about that SNL skit where the add producers were going over ideas for a Cheetos commercial. Everyone was falling all over themselves to come with some far fetched ridiculous idea involving a victim and social justice. The one who said hey, how about something simple where the person eats Cheetos because they taste so good.... immediately dismissed.

I read an interesting thread on Twitter that explained the reason why the commercial is so offputting is simply the perspective forced upon the viewers. In essence, the writer of the ad chose the wrong perspective and it leaves people feeling uncomfortable. She compared it to "first person porn" in the way that the viewer is forced to become, essentially, the husband in this scenario, which feels unnatural and just creepy. It was quite illuminating and makes a lot of sense.

I'm 69. Just got in from a 4 hour 70 mile Saturday bicycle ride. Lucky me because the weather is OK to get out instead of having to get on a Peloton like sooo many around the country/world who are experiencing lousy weather or are pressed for time due to family and/or job.

BTW, just saw the Aviation Gin commercial with Peloton Girl. Way to go Ryan.

Why do they even call it "Peloton"? It's like they don't even know what it means. The word "peloton" is French for a large pack of lead bicycle riders in a race. I guess it's for safety reasons, but when there's a pack in a stage race (i.e. Tour de France), everyone is given the same time as the lead rider in the pack. Someone riding at home on an exercise bike is hardly riding in a pack.

I remember there was a movie about motorcycle street racing called Torque. Pretty stupid title since sport bikes aren't know for torque.

Honestly, 5 pages later I'm finding it hilarious how hard one needs to "over-think" it to either condemn or defend this ad. These are not real people - there's no back-story, they have no thoughts or feelings or relationship dynamics. The perfect house is a set, not a home. And I'm not trying to be condescending here; I know you all know this. I'm just flummoxed by how "into it" everybody has gotten.

I see the ad 3-5 times a night. I see nothing wrong with it. People are just too sensitive or just have nothing better to do so they pick apart things they don't like. So what. They casted a hottie. If they casted a overweight woman people would probably say the ad was fat shaming and fat people need to buy a Peloton to lose weight. Which makes me think …. I need to lose weight and I got tired of using my Bowflex Max Trainer. Maybe I need to buy a Peloton

Dang, people spend $2000 for an exercise bike? Wow! The ad is a little unusual, but I don't see what the big controversy is all about. The ad is a little awkward, in my opinion, because she's recording herself on the bike and stuff. However, if you're a millennial who Instagrams and twitters the heck out of your life and everything is documented, photographed, or video'd of yourself online, then yeah....the ad makes sense. I haven't read the 14 pages of discussion about this ad, though.

I don't know. I can see his commercial as a forestory. The actress is totally traumatized by all the people that read way too much into a commercial & judge the actress by her eyes, weight &/or reaction to receiving a stationary, exercise bike. After reading all of the ridiculous social media posts, she really needs a drink or 2 or 3. As a celebrity, Ryan is probably sick of social media's over the top reaction to most everything.

I'll admit that commercials that don't make sense are a pet peeve of mine, but I can't help but shake my head at anyone who finds this commercial sexist. It's not surprising that it's the same people who are offended by everything.

It's all funny to me. The outrage over the bike and the outrage over the outrage. I am glad Reynolds did the gin commercial. It's much better than the Peloton ad IMO.

I think it must be nice to have nothing more pressing in one’s life so that one has the luxury of being outraged by an ad on TV for an exercise bike.

And yes, I’m being dismissive of everyone who is outraged about this. Their outrage would be more useful being directed at human trafficking, veterans homelessness, child abuse, animal abuse or the myriad of other true issues that impact our world today.

The Peleton is not an exercise bike, it is a trainer. You need one thing with cardio exercise, elevated heart rate. Equipment such as the Peleton really is for people who compete. Not all bicycle racing is Tour de France. Normal people don't need to be training, they just need exercise. But these days, if you are not extreme training as if you are in the Tour de France in this case, you are doing it wrong.

I don't understand all the everyone has to be training. What is everyone training for? On the bicycle forums, everyone is training for nothing. If they were training for something, giving their daily post history, they would be talking about that race activity or tour activity in those parts of the forum, but they are not. It's just constant hard core training.

A guy I ride with, skips out on some of our tours because he didn't "train". He rides almost every day except for winter, but since he only got three 50 mile rides in, cancels the 6 day very easy Pittsburgh to DC ride. Last spring I jumped on the bike for the first time since winter and rode 8 miles behind my house. Then it rained for a week and I rode that 8 miles when the rain stopped. Then it rained non stop, I bought a motorcycle in the 1 weekend it stopped raining and before I knew it, July had arrived and I was sitting on my 120 lb. bicycle 20 miles in showing my passport to cross over into Canada for 11 days. 580 miles and actually cut short on day 10 when I continued an extra 20 to finish instead of camping that night. Only 16 miles ridden prior for the year. Oh, in case you didn't see previous posts, I'm a 245 lb. fat guy.

Just get some freakin exercise and stop all this training for nothing, LOL. I'll never understand that mentality.

On the casting -
There was no way they could win here. Cast somebody thin, and the husband is "controlling". Cast somebody overweight, and it's "body shaming".

On the "creepy" factor -
I don't really see it. Any discomfort I read in her expression was of the normal "I don't really feel like doing this right now, even though I want to do it in general" variety. (Plus, a lot of people today blog/Instagram/Snap everything, so even though I'm not into it myself, I don't exactly see it as unusual.)

On publicity -
Yes, the stock went down...for now, because people were afraid of the social media backlash. But millions of people who had never heard of Peleton (and I'm including myself in this) have now Googled it and know this brand and what they sell. If I ever decide I want home-coached exercise, you bet it will be the first name that pops into my head.

Stock price may recover, hope so for their sake. What gets me is why do people care so much? Also the power of social media and the internet. The company lost something like $942 million in market capitalization in a day. All because of an ad someone decided was wrong. People no longer do their research and make up their own minds, they follow the herd mentality and if you dare to go against the tide you are labeled sexist, or racist, or whatever. We spend so much time preaching against bullying and yet that's all social media is.

The world I live in today bears no resemblance to the world I grew up in.

Well, the reason is because you are joining with others in online classes - it's like a virtual Peloton. The connectivity is the selling point.
