i had a person request a paypal invoice rather than sending to friend/family for reimbursement for transferring points. Anyone familiar with this? Problems?

I've never rented points, but I've used Paypal often to sell/buy things from informal Facebook groups. I think it's always important to use Paypal goods/services instead of the friends/family option because both the seller and buyer receive protection from Paypal.

I'm worried they will transfer the money into my bank account then tell me there is a problem. Has anything like that ever happened?

That protects THEM... if they send it to friend or family, they have no protection and you could renig. If i was on the receiving end.. i would have no problem with this.. i have done it many many times.. Worse case scenario, you have to give the money back... but you still have your points and can sell them to someone else.

Paypal does not offer protection on timeshare transactions. There are fees associated with goods/services that are charged to the seller, whereas friends/family has no fees. When I rent points, I tell my renters that it is their choice, but if they choose goods/services, that I will charge them the fees. (Go to https://www.shopify.com/tools/paypal-fee-calculator to calculate how much to put on the invoice to get the amount you need.) But I also tell them that they should know that Paypal does not offer any protection for them for timeshare transactions, so they're not getting anything for those fees.

I've decided not to even offer PayPal as an option any more when I do rent. The last few years I've offered it as an option with the renter paying the roughly 3% fee. It may add risk to either or both parties the way PayPal works and has it set up. I had a person recently that was insisting on doing this as a transfer to friends and family and seemed upset the I'd insist on it being a payment for services. They seemed to think I was robbing them since they'd never heard of PayPal charging a fee to transfer money.

we used paypal to rent and a few times and never had a problem with them doing friends or family. i understand people hesitating not to though.

But it's dishonest to do so in this situation.

not really. everyone is my friend.
I'm sure you don't really believe that. It's actually a double whammy in this situation, at least for those who now know differently. It's outside of paypal's policy to use their services for timeshare and it's lying to pay for goods or services effectively saying it's a gift to family friends.

The "friends and family" option requires an actual cash transfer and foregos any sort of buyer protection. Since paypal prohibits timeshare transactions either way, the friends and family option is probably the most appropriate.

For those who do not accept Paypal -- what are you using for accepting payment? mailed Cashier check?
I use a rental agreement. While I am sure there are loop holes since I am not a lawyer - I do feel it offers me some protection and the renter some protection.

I accept personal checks. I rent far enough in advance that I'll know if there's a problem in time to rent to someone else.

Same here.

A good rental agreement may slightly reduce your risk, a not good one could increase the risk. All it really does is serve to clarify certain issues and that's the main component. I generally don't use one but am very clear on the issues and expectations.

DVC requires a contract for rentals as per the Public Offering Statement.
