Ok, so my family and I leave in just under two weeks. We are on the regular dining plan, and we are two table service credits 'over'. We were going to pay for the two least expensive out of pocket. I've crunched all the numbers and it seems that paying out of pocket for Cinderella's Royal Table may be our best bet. (Since the tip is included in the cost and it's two table service credits.)
My question is - we have booked the reservation as if we are paying with the dining plan... can we change that when we get there? Or do I need to call them now?

When you dine, they will ask if you're on the dining plan. You can just tell them no, and it will be fine. We do this every year. Most people paying oop pre-pay but they are easily able to handle people on the dining plan paying oop as well.

If you have kids, you may want to pay for their CRT meal with credits and then pay OOP at any a la carte places for them. The kid's meals at other places are right at $10. You don't have to use credits for everyone, you can switch it up.

1) Yes, you can change the payment method, as mentioned, just by saying "No" to the "are you on the Dining Plan" question at the podium.
2) And, congrats on "doing the math" and discovering DDP is not financially wise for character meals.
3) So many other people just book the meals without comparing costs.
4) A smart consumer !
