We have never used a taxi, and it looks like we will use one 3 times on our DL/San Diego trip. I did a search here and found a post where a 15-20% tip is recommended for the taxi driver.

What is the best way to pay? Credit card? Cash? Do you put the tip on the credit card too? Is there something you fill out to show how much tip to put on the card? If cash, do they make change? I'm clueless how this is supposed to work!

Thanks :drive:

taxi most certainly makes change and I usually tip 15% unless there has been

- exceptionally poor service - less

- good service, or extra requirements (luggage) - more

most taxi today can accept major credit cards and you CAN add the tip there. In this situation, if I pay CC I still try to tip cash. Cabbies live off tips and how that gets reported . . .

detailed receipt? don't hold your breath on that one.

Americans tend to be afraid of taxi - unless they live in DC, New York or Chicago - most cabbies are just trying to make an honest buk. I finally learned after years of using airport shuttles that I was paying MORE than the taxi cost would have been ... WAY more. (for 1 person a shuttle may be cost effective, if you are 2 or 3 almost always not)

BUT it IS a good idea to know how far it is from your A to your B! And in the US your taxi should have a meter . . .
