Pathetic TV question.

You can. I did. I bought a standalone TiVo with 80 hours capacity, and bought a lifetime subscription two or three years ago. I believe it cost a couple hundred extra dollars. Definitely worth it.

I'm about to buy a second high-definition TiVo, and stack it on top of my first. It sounds crazy, but I haven't used a VHS tape in years. Go to Tivocommunity.com for more than you'll ever want to know about Tivo.

With four kids running around the house, I can't live without it, especially during football season. If the baby's crying, I hit the pause button, go find my wife so she can take care of the baby, and then un-pause the game. I never miss an extra point, and the baby never misses a diaper change. Thanks, honey!

I actually don't have a true-blue Tivo system. We got Dish Network satellite about 2 mos ago (when they started carrying local channels in my area), and Dish has its own DVR (Digital Video Recorder) hardware. It's not as feature-rich as a Tivo, but it more than gets the job done. Picture is crystal-clear. It has a 100 hour storage capacity. Two separate tuners in the DVR. Blah, blah, blah.

Dish charges an extra $5 per month for the DVR, but that's less than Tivo's monthly charge, I can connect the unit to two separate TVs, and there was no up-front charge for the equipment.

In the end, we paid NOTHING out of pocket, have Dish + DVR on two TVs, Dish HDTV on a third, and I'm saving about $25 per month over what I was paying the local cable company for similar services (although cable did not provide any DVR services.)

There's a saying in the DVR world: "Never stand between a wall and a TiVo owner." We tend to talk about them endlessly, and I've succeeded in doing it again.

You'll have to excuse me. I need to go find some other threads to hijack.

We love DISH PVR! ::yes::

This thread just reminded me to record The Apprentice tonight!

I completely agree with the posters who are recommending Tivo. Sonce we got one 2 years ago our lives have literally changed. We never worry about what time something comes on or if we'll miss our favorite shows. Matter of fact, I couldn't even tell you what night our favorite shows are on! Never watch live TV anymore, except for sports.

Another advantage is that my kids no longer make me miss part of anything I'm watching. I just pause the show, take care of the kinds and get right back where I was. AMAZING.

For the record, If you purchase a DirecTV system many come with a free Tivo now. And if you purchase their top of the line package Tivo service is free.

Add me to the list of Tivo supporters! We have DirecTV and the Tivo box was $100, which they divided over 3 monthly pmts. The monthy fee is $5 I think. Totally worth it - I don't know what I ever did without it.

Yep! Love my TIVO! We've had it for about 4 years so the life time subcription was definitely with it!

DH did a little "fixing" so our TIVO can record over 250 (?) hours. We TIVO up to a whole season of a TV series at a time. Then we have marathon viewing sessions over the course of a few days in the evenings when the kiddies are asleep.

You wouldn't believe how much time you save in front of the TV by fast forwarding not only the commercials but the recaps from the previous week's episode, the opening credits, and the scenes from next week's episode.

I use to TIVO shows like Trading Spaces, Clean Sweep, and What Not to Wear. Not any more though 'cause it got boring fast and all the shows started looking the same. Well, I would watch the beginning of each show and then fast forward to the end to the reveal, which was all I wanted to see anyways! It saved lots of time.

We TIVO'd the summer olympics during the middle of the night (or was it in the afternoon?) and watched all 4 hours in about 2 hours. Every time a gymnist finished a routine or a diver finished a dive, I would fast forward to the score. Why waste time watching the athletes walking around waiting for their scores! My swimmers always swam "extra fast" until the last lap. Ha, ha, ha...

Lol! Do I sound enough like a TIVO geek?!!!

DH and I actually don't watch the prime time reality shows. We have enough on our plates. But I would imagine that they would be PERFECT for TIVOing. All those commercial breaks, all those teasers before the commercials ("find out after the break"), and all those recaps after the break. Heck you could probably watch a one hour reality show in about 35 minutes and not miss a thing.

My kids love TIVO too. They can watch their favorite shows at any time we let them watch TV. They get to choose the shows we TIVO for them instead of having to watch whatever is currently on TV. They can even choose to watch 3 episodes of Lilo & Sitch back to back if they want. The kids know how to work the remote so they can watch the same episode 2 to 3 times in a row - you know how they like to do that!

They missed the TIVO so much when we went to my parents that we bought them a TIVO too. DH found a deal at Best Buy - I think it was a 80 hour TIVO with built in DVD player for $200. The great thing about this TIVO is that it includes Basic TIVO with 3 days of programing data but no fancy bells and whistles for no additional cost or monthly service fees.

Sorry, to go on and on and on....

Didn't someone mention not standing between a TIVO owner and a wall? LOL!!

Okay! Quit now! I totally want one of these. I'm sure dh doesn't. Do you honey? Are you reading this? Pleeeaaasssee?

Did I mention that I'm pathetic?:sad2:

I've spent huge sums on a home entertainment center. More than a reasonable man should be allowed to spend. I could live with a smaller screen. I could live without the surround sound, or even the DVD player.

Taking away my TiVo, however, would be like trying to take away Charlton Hesston's gun...

...or Michael Moore's Big Mac.

I'd support an amendment defending my inalienable right to TiVo.

if you've got cox cable in tulsa, you should have an integrated set top box PVR available from cox within the next two months... okc already has it, tulsa's up next... as an aside, your question is pathetic ;) ... we have tivo ( and have had it for 4 years) but we have found a steady decrease in any content (defintely not any "network" televsion) worth recording... and alas, for the most part, our tivo sits unused...

Great! Thanks for that info. I'm not sure what a "intergrated set top box PVR" is, but I'm assuming it is something similiar to TiVo. Thanks again. Not that this has anything to do with my original question. ;)

Count us in! We are TIVO addicts!! Got ours last Christmas-- DH and I always go together and get one or two big items! We have a 40 hour Phillips DVR ($100) and the service is $4.99 a month! It is SO worth it!

But make sure you buy a DVR with more than 40 hours. We never, never thought we'd need more but it is ALWAYS FULL!!

Yeah right, it will probably be Christmas before they put us out of our misery :D . I'm right there with ya, I'll be taping AMC the whole time we are there in October too. It worked well last December, as my dd was sick when we got home and had to stay home from school, so I was home all day and caught up on my AMC in a day and a half LOL.

From Roserae:

Not that this has anything to do with my original question.

Since when does an original question have anything to do with a discussion thread? We simply don't care anymore if your villa has a VCR. We're more interested in convincing you to buy a TiVo. And don't try to start another thread trying to find someone else to answer a VCR question for you. You've aroused the passions of the newly formed Disney Congregation of the Church of TiVo.

We shall follow you from thread to thread like door to door missionaries on a bicycle trying to convert you. I and my fellow members shall not rest until you too know the joys of the Season Pass, the 30-second skip button, and the WishList.

Please, take one of our flyers. May we come in?

But be wary of dangerous people like brunoflipper who says:

alas, for the most part, our tivo sits unused...

ARISE TIVO-IANS AND REJECT HIM! REJECT HIM I SAY!

Brunoflipper is, I believe, the anti-Tivo that we've been warned would come.

In May the GV at OKW had a DVD player. We brought tapes and couldn't play them.

Oh dear...did you say you lived here?...in Tulsa? Scary! I think you're a little, er... ;) Or to quote the moose from Brother Bear...

"That bear...over there...he's (cough cough) crazy!"
