Passports are going up on July 13

I renewed my passport a couple months ago. It wasn't due to expire until October, but I thought I'd make sure to get it in in plenty of time. I got it back (after being rejected because they didn't like the photo) and the new renewal term starts in April. I got gypped out of six months! pirate:

Moral of the story. . .don't renew too far ahead.

I was wondering if this would happen to us also. Our kids' passports don't expire til end of Nov but we cruise end of Oct/1st week Nov.

makes the DMV seem efficient. At least with them if you renew your DL or registration early, you add 1 yr on from last exp date. Not so w/ passports.

DH and I have been talking about going on a cruise next year. With all this talk about passports, which we have never had, can we just get the passport cards for ourseleves and kids? Or do we need a full pledged passports? :confused3

All this is new to me. HELP!

From what I read there are travel restrictions on the cards so it would depend where you are going. You should speak to someone in the passport office what is the best thing for you. The new rules confuse me.

Passport cards are for land/sea entries into the U.S. Closed-loop cruises (to/from the SAME U.S. port) do not require passports at this time. That said, I highly recommend getting the U.S. passport book. It's accepted as proof of U.S. citizenship by land, sea or air entry and while you may not think you need it, if you're on one of those closed-loop cruises and need to get off the ship for some emergency, the passport book is your best bet to get back into the U.S. easily.

Plus, what if the trip of a lifetime opportunity presents itself and you have to let it pass you by because you don't have the appropriate passport? :headache:

We carry our passport books as identification for all domestic and international travel. It *seems* to be easier and we're ready for anything!

The kids' passports had expired so we did those today. Plus my dh's. Grand total savings by renewing before July 13th: $130. Extra benefit: my oldest ds turned 16 in March so now his passport is good for 10 years. Yay!

Many places have restrictions on traveling with a passport that expires within 6 months. So it was probably good that you renewed anyway.

The reason to have a passport when you cruise (even though it isn't required for a closed loop cruise) is so that you are able to fly home (or fly to the next port if you miss the ship). The passport CARD would not allow you to do that. You need the passport BOOK to do that. So you might as well get the book.

Wow! I visited the Budget Board for the very first time today and I have already saved $35! My August calendar "to do" list includes renewal for my husband's passport. Will start the process for it this weekend. Thanks for sharing this tip with everyone.
