I was always told it was to be valid for the length of your stay so you should be fine. REMEMBER to get your ESTA :thumbsup2

Hi, I always thought that for the US you have to have at least 6 months left on your passport :confused3

I would check with the passport agency or US immigration just to be sure.

Good Luck

Claire :)

You should be fine It only has to be valid for you stay for US immigration My sister traveled last year and had less than a month left on hers had no problems at all :)

Although US immigration only require you to have it valid for the length of your stay, some airlines require that you have 6 months valid on it. Check with whoever you are flying with

Edited to add, You do have 6 months left though so you will be fine

There was another thread on this a little while ago (sorry, I couldn't find the link). Most countries with visa waiver status have a grace 6 months on an expired passport as long as the passport is valid until the completion of the trip. Check the US immigration website as it is on there somewhere.
I only wish I had known this information before I spent a day queuing (with the associated cost) to renew my dd's passport in 1 day for a last minute trip at Christmas!!

Doesn't affect you Les as you have more than 6 months anyway but it is all down to your airline if under 6 months remaining.

US immigration only require passports to be vailid for length of stay. They would not issue ESTA's if the passports were not valid for your travel dates.

Airlines: Virgin, BA and all US carriers stick to the US immigration guidelines, any other airlines need to be checked only problem is if you ring and ask they will probably tell you 6 months as it is easier to tell you that than find the correct information. If you ring Virgin or BA the chances are they will tell you 6 months, some have no idea of their own airlines policy.

Many people just renew anyway as you can transfer upto 9 months of an old passport onto a new one, making the new one valid upto 10 years and 9 months but the correct info is the 6 month rule is waived for UK travellers under the visa waiver program.

I have a problem with my passport and our trip in October....Virgin holiday website states passport has to have 6 months after date of arriving back in UK....we arrive back in UK on 20th October and passport runs out 25th April...therefore i only have 5 days!!! What does everyone think?

Where are you seeing 6 months for passport?

Info for holidays outside USA state 6 months
Q. What should I check with regards to my passport?Q. What should I check with regards to my passport?
A. You must have a FULL and VALID passport to visit the destinations we feature on this website. It needs to be valid for at least 6 months from the date of return. Also, please ensure that the names and initials on your flight tickets are the same as your passport.

Holidays within USA

Q. What documents are required for entry into the U.S.?Q. What documents are required for entry into the U.S.?
A. Following a review of security procedures at all airports in the USA, the US Immigration Department has updated its policy on passengers entering the United States using the current Visa Waiver Programme, of which the UK is a participant.

All British passport holders will only be permitted to enter the United States if they hold a machine readable passport. The majority of 'new style' red British passports are machine readable, although those issued outside the UK or those not in the new style may not be. Should your passport not be machine readable it will be necessary to either obtain a new passport or to obtain a US visa

If you are seeing 6 months required the info is wrong and needs changing, VA(who you fly with, not VH) do not require 6 months validity.

Just FYI...

I had to get a new passport because of a trip I went on - I needed a visa for it, and they would only issue it with 6+ months left on my passport.

I renewed my passport with 5 months left and they automatically extended my passport to last for 10 years from the time my old one would have expired (i.e. it was a new passport valid for 10 years and 5 months). So if you need a new one anyway, it might be worth giving the passport office a ring to see how far they will extend yours to if you renew.

Sorry - didn't make myself very clear....we get back on 20th October and your passport must have 6 months left at least to run from the date of departure from the USA. Mine runs out on 25th April so therefore i have 6 months and 5 days left on my passport. x

your passport must have 6 months left at least to run from the date of departure from the USA.

This is what I am not understanding, where you got this info from?
If your passport expires the day after you return to UK you are still allowed to travel with Virgin. The 6 month rule is waived for UK(and some other countries;) ) travellers. The rules are same for both US immigration and Virgin, your passport only needs to be valid for your travel dates, no longer.

In my defence your honour, i am blonde, nearer 50 than 40 and am frantically trying to pack a suitcase for a trip on Wednesday to Cape Verde!!!!.....ok i "thought" it said that on the Virgin Holiday website!!!:rotfl2:

So in summing up......i travel on 4th October 2011 and return 20th October 2011, passport runs out 25th April 2012....so they will let me in and out of the country;)
