How Long Will it Take to Process a Passport Application?

February-April is the busiest time of year for Passport Services, with Americans planning spring break and summer trips. The best advice is, Apply Early! Or even now if you might be checking out deals on airfare or hotels outside the U.S.
If you are traveling or need your passport in order to get a visa within the next 10 days, please call us at the National Passport Information Center or use the link below to check the status of your application online.

If you have already applied but will not need your passport within the next two weeks:
Don't worry, please!!! There should be no need to contact us at this time. Our goal is to make sure that no one misses a trip. We have added staff and are working overtime across the country.
Checking the status of your application: You can check the status of your application online.
Currently, it is taking up to 7 days for Expedited Applications and up to 3 weeks for Routine Applications to be tracked online. Please allow that much time before contacting us to check on your application.

Normally Routine Service passports are received within 6 weeks. Currently, it is taking up to 10 weeks. If you are not traveling within the next 10 days, please check the status of your application online, keeping in mind that it is taking approximately 3 weeks for our system to start tracking your application. If you are traveling within the next 10 days, please call or email the National Passport Information Center.

Normally, Expedite Service takes 2 weeks to receive your passport from the date you applied. Because of unusually high demand, it is now taking 3-4 weeks and possibly longer if you renewed by mail and did not mark Expedite on the mailing envelope. If you havent received your passport and are traveling within the next 10 days , please call or email the National Passport Information Center .
