I dont usually post on any of the uk forums (im usually on the teen board) but i thought that you lot would have more information for me.

Its no big deal and some of you are probably rolling your eyes and thinking how pointless my post is.. anyway Im 16 and my aunti has managed to get me a part time job at tesco, i was excited at first but know its starting to worry me!! (yes silly i know!) :goodvibes

Its my first proper job and im nervous.im going for an informal interview tomorrow (but they have told my aunti i already have the job) so im not worrying about that.. i know some of you must have some sort of experience working at a supermarket and i was wondering how hard/easy it is...is there anything i need to know, how long would i take to get used to it etc.

Anything really! thanks! :)

i can't offer any advice but i wanted to say well done !! a part-time job is a great idea you should be very proud of yourself :)

I'm sure you'll settle in really easy, every job seems weird at first even if you're experienced in that particular area, you will have to get used to where things are etc.
Don't be afraid to ask questions! theres nothing worse for someone who's training you to think you've got a particular thing sussed, and if you don't understand it, ask again, they'd sooner you did rather than struggle through and make a mess of a job.
Well done too on earning your own money, very responsible, I'm sure you'll have a great time, supermarket jobs are very sociable and you'll meet loads of new friends :goodvibes

Well done on your first job. I work for sainsburys and my advice is that you will have some nice customers and then you will get the ignorant and rude customers, unfortunately there isn't much you can do about that. Also you will have to learn to be patient and tolerant. Really just be yourself & you will be fine. You will pick it up fairly quickly, if you are on the tills remember to ask for ID on anyone looking under 21 for age related products as they always have test purchases going in to stores to see how well they do. It will be you that gets the fine if you serve someone underage & get caught. You will be trained for this so don't worry, just be alert:goodvibes

I sometimes help to train people and I always say to them that don't be afraid of asking something you don't understand, people are there to help you the same as what Carol mention before.

I personally hate my job but that is due to management, they expect me to do a different job but don't train me for it and the fact they are using me for there advantage, which will be sorted as soon as one of my managers come back from holiday.

Good luck:thumbsup2

Thanks everyone, everything you've said has helped.

Just one question i think nikki might be able to help me out with, if i do work on the tills how hard are they to work? i dont know if any of you have seen the advert recently, i cant remember what supermarket it was, (i think it was asda) :confused3 but when that women was confused working on the tills and messed it up totally! i know it wont be as bad as that, but is it really confusing? :lmao:

Good luck.. I got my first P/T job last summer (at Dunlem Mill) I was really nervous about it but within a couple of weeks I'd settled down and the people were really nice and I was gradually getting used to everything..

You will most probably encounter some mardy customers at some point, just stay relaxed with them and call a manager if you feel nervous... Good luck with your new job!!

I got till trained it wasn't too hard to grasp, and the change comes up on the till so no dodgy maths skills! At the beginning you will have someone with you when you're being trained, they shouldn't just stick you on and decide you should know, and they'll expect you to make some mistakes try not to worry :)

DH used to be a manager at Tesco and he would be the first to say that if you get a horrible customer just be super nice to them and that soon sorts them out - you can think what you like behind the scenes but if you are really polite and friendly then it tends to wind them up more! ;)

Good luck with your job, I am sure you will love it!

Good luck for tomorrow & well done for getting a job. Every job interview can be a little scary weather it's your first or not & the same with a job but at the end of the day it's what you make so i hope all goes well as i'm sure it will.
I used to work for Tesco as a home shopper which i loved .
I love to talk to poeple & most of the customers were lovely people, & you get to know the regulars & they will start to get to know you.
Till work is very easy as it's really all done for you, & you will get training for any thing you do.
Do you know what you will be doing yet ? Are you having the induction tomorrow as well as that can take up to 2hrs.
Remember to take national insurance number and your bank details for you pay ?;)

I just found out i will be working on the tills and i have to stay for a few hours tomorrow for the training. Im so glad to hear the tills are easy to work, after tommorow I wont be starting for two weeks because I'm going on holiday, but they already knew that before so everythings sorted :goodvibes .

I'm so nervous now about everything this and the fact that im having my gcse results on the 23rd, i worry about everything i think i need to calm down a little.

thanks everyone!! :thumbsup2

I worked at Tesco's once for a short time and I was also on the tills, they were very straight forward to use and like you said you will have training first, I loved being on the tills, talking to all the customers and all the fruit and veg that did'nt have bar codes had a code number on that you looked up on your list. The only thing I kept forgetting to do was removing the security tag form bottles of alcohol that was inside box's, such as expensive and boxed Whisky and Brandy, but I soon learnt.:goodvibes

My daughter who is 16 has just started working at a new fashion store in town on a part time basis while she is in college and she was very nervous when she first started but now loves it. So much so she is doing extra hours all the time.

Good luck to you and well done on starting your job:thumbsup2 :thumbsup2

:goodvibes Good Luck and congratulations. I used to work on the tills in Boots and looking back it was one of my fave jobs as i got to indulge in my fave past time which is TALKING!!!! i am sure you will learn some great skills that will help you when you get a full time job or carry on studying. Congratulations again and enjoy it! :goodvibes

I would imagine Tescos are like Sainsburys in which you will be till trained before they let you loose on the customers, after a while you will then be put on the shop floor but should have someone watch you for a while. Don't be afraid to make mistakes ( I still do sometimes after 7 years!) as long as you know where you have gone wrong and learn from it.

Just relax and don't panic.

I grew up living in London and got myself a Saturday job working in BHS in Wembley when I was 15 - and I loved every minute of it.

When my DH and I were struggling many years ago with an horrendous mortgage and sky high interest rates, we took other jobs to supplement our income and mine was an evening and Saturday job working in M&S - loved it again. I loved working on the tills, meeting people and all that.

You'll do fine, enjoy going in for the training and good luck for your first full day:thumbsup2

Working on the tills is the best bit of shop work, you'll be fine, have a fab holiday.

I spent many summer and Christmas holidays working in one supemarket or another. And my one bit of advice would be to try to keep smiling,:) , even when dealng with an unpleasant customer. If you are polite, pleasant and cheerful even the most difficult of customers can usually be won round.

But as many other people have said, don't be afraid to ask if you need help or are a little unsure. From training many people I would prefer to explain a process two or three times and it be done correctly than to explain it once and it then be done wrong. Also if you do do something wrong (we all do at one time another) tell someone as soon as possible. Mistakes can usually be put right quite quickly and you are more likely to get into trouble for not reporting an error than for doing it in the first place.

But Good Luck and enjoy spending your first wages.......

Congrats, and good luck with your results, I know how you feel about those, I get my AS results on the 16th! You'll be glad you have the extra money you make from working!
