Parking with ECV but no Handicap tag

My adult son will be using an ECV next week on his doctor's advice due to heart problems, but we won't have a Handicap parking tag (just received this recommendation yesterday and are leaving Saturday). We're staying offsite so will be driving to the parks each day. I read the FAQs re parking with an ECV and know that the ECV can't go on the parking tram. So, it sounds like we have two alternatives:

1) Drop our son and the ECV at the guest drop-off location, park the car in the regular lot and then ride the tram to the entrance as usual. My question re that process is, is there an easy way to get from the guest drop-off at each park to the regular lot, or should we expect to have to exit the parking area and re-enter at the end of the line?

2) Or would it make sense for us to park as usual, unload the ECV in the parking lot, and have our son drive it to the park entrance while we take the tram?

:thanks:

I believe they will allow you to utilize handicap parking , or closer parking under that circumstance, but I would advise you to arrive early to your park of choice. There have been many occasions when I am hauling my ECV AND have a handicap placard but all of the accessible spaces are taken and they are using overflow parking where it is not possible to park and drop the ramp to unload my ECV. I need to unload it in the driving lane and put the ramp back up before pulling into the parking space. It is inconvenient and blocks the travel lane for a few minutes but there isn't much of an alternative.

I disagree - no handicap tag - no handicap parking...

As you arrive, tell the CMs assisting with parking what you need: they will direct you accordingly. Do not park in a disabled space (usually marked in blue in Disney lots) without a plate or hang tag.

No, no, we wouldn't park in a handicap space without a tag! Thanks all for your suggestions though. I think we'll just park as usual and let our son ride the ECV to the park entrance while the rest of us ride the tram - or walk with him.

I go with a friend that uses an ECV and has no handycap parking tage

we try to get there at RD and have done this two ways

first time we parked normally we were in the 2 row ( after preferred) and got out set her ECV up and was on our way ( one of the CM put a coin behind our car so that we had room to put the ECV back in when we got back very nice.

second time we told the toll both we had an ECV they told us to let the next CM know we did he looked at use kind of weird and said well I guess you can park over there but make sure you do not park in a HC spot we parked on the other side of the HC spots and had to walk 3x firther to get to the TTC. we have never done this gain oh an d someone parked behind us living us no room to put the ECV back in we were the first car in the first row and really could not pull out much with out blocking the road not too much fun.

This is what I always did and it worked just fine

You should be able to get a Disabled Parking Permit, not sure of the regulations in your state, but here in WA you simply need a prescription from your doctor, you go into your local DMV or DOL and ask for a temporary permit. it is given to you right away. If you leave on Sat, you should be able to get one in time depending on the protocols and requirements.

DS is not disabled; using an ECV is just a precaution to prevent him from overexerting himself. So we'll be fine with regular parking and having him ride the ECV while we walk or ride the tram.

Thanks everyone!

I would tell ask your doctor for a prescription for a permit, they can do them for short periods of time.

I would have son drive ECV to the entrance and meet him there if you get the tram if the parking is quite far. Or depending on budget you could pay for preferred parking but I think it's a $40 a day.

No one was suggesting that they are disabled in a generic punitive term, however, by sheer definition of being suggested by your doctor due to a heart condition, your DS would qualify for a temporary permit with a doctors prescription. If you don't wish to get one that's obviously your prerogative, but this is exactly what the temporary placards were designed for, Temporary disability over a short period of time so it certainly is not abusing the system. But good luck with whatever you choose to do and have a great time!

Friend started out with hang tag, then segued into a permanent license plate. she was told it's one or the other, both came with an accompanying wallet sized ID card.

She's going to WDW this summer, but her hang tag is now expired. She's worried re using it and getting her rental towed.

What do others do in this situation?

In our state you just have to take the expired one to the DMV without having to get a new note from the doctor. I got a new one when my old one expired and took it in and the DMV gave me a non expiration one and said to just bring the old one in and they will replace it.

This is why I don't get the license plate - S.C. only allows one as well and the placard I can at least take with me.

If her state only allows one or the other and she has a license plate, she is kind of stuck.
If she uses the expired hang tag, she could possibly get ticketed.

She might want to check with her state to see if anything has changed and she could have both. Or, she might want to check if she could switch from a license plate to a hangtag.

The way I understand it's it's either one or the other - hang tag or plate. If she wants to change has to have dr fill out the form and surrender her plate. Crazy procedure IMO but I'm Guessing the intent is to keep things on the up & up.

If she does get ticketed, Would think she could plead her case afterwards by showing proof she was eligible (copy of her ID card or registration/plate) and get a pass on it.

Not sure how long you have in FL to appeal a ticket/if you have to pay it first, then appeal (how it is in PA)/nor how the rental car company would feel about it. Just seems a shame to be afraid to park in a spot she's entitled to use.

If it's expired, I would not use it. A) I don't believe that's ethical and B) you could be ticketed/towed. She could try checking with her Dr to see if can be re-newed.

Oh, I think I mis-understood...ignore my last post.

So, if I understand, because she has a hard plate, the hang tag is no longer useful (one or the other). You could call rental car company and see if they have provisions for this. You could also call Disney and see what they say. Using an expired hang tag, unless you've gotten some type of approval ahead of time, is risky. You could also contact your state DMV and explain you'll be getting a rental car and see if they can offer anything.
