Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

But 1520 is the max on this test. So why wouldn't it translate to a 240 index? And why don't they just change it for example to say, the cutoff is 1480- 1500? Thank you though, I will have to go log into his account and read more. He only sent me a screen shot of the score. He's not in the NMSQT range anyway, I was just curious. :)

The old test didn't have an index. It was scored at a max of 240. It basically mirrored the SAT which was on a 2400 point scale. I don't know why the PSAT isn't scored on a 160 scale to match up with the new SAT 1600 point scale. I don't know why an index is assigned rather than just using the actual score.

Prom......oh I remember DS's prom days. DD is not in the least bit interested. *sigh*
Currently, DD is busy packing - she is departing for Boston in a little over a week where she and her BFF accompanied by Grandma will be touring Harvard, MIT, U-Mass Amherst, Hampshire, Amherst and Boston College.
Whew, it makes me tired just thinking about it!

PSAT - well, I know she got her scores, honestly, I don't pay much attention, this is her gig, she tells me about them, I have no doubt she did just fine but I don't stress over the tests.
I know she is scheduled for the ACT in April I think it is and I believe she has scheduled a SAT but I'm not really sure. She says she wants to take them at least twice, ok.

She has been all over the map in regards to college styles - Liberal arts to major universities. Currently, she has decided that small liberal arts really is not going to suit her interests of Physics, Astro Physics and Chemistry.
She has decided she will apply to UT (Univ TX, Austin) and McGill (Montreal, Canada)
Berkley is also on her radar as is UCLA - we are encouraging she look at Texas schools, she insists she wants to go somewhere cold, she was born in snow country and misses it. I am hoping Boston is bitter cold during her visit and she is reminded that the cold is really not all that desirable.

Anybody thinking about prom yet? We stopped at a shop to look at dresses on Saturday and she tried on 13 but didn't get anything. .

Junior prom is really casual here, just a regular type party dress, nothing like the Senior Prom type dresses. Typically the Juniors ask Sophomores so they can go too. My daughter usually buys all her dresses online so its a lot less painful for me LOL. We just did the whole sweet 16 thing a month and a half ago so that meant bridesmaids type gown, catering hall etc!

Our prom is Juniors & Seniors plus anyone they may ask (including freshmen). Almost all dresses are long and fancy.

LOL for Homecoming we ordered a dress online because we couldn't find one in stores that was short, but not too short (only the Court wears long dresses). I wouldn't say it was less painful for either one of us- the armholes were too tight and grandma's adjustments didn't make it any better. It was beautiful but literally painful to her shoulders. This time around we are definitely trying on first! And it's easier since her height/long torso won't be an issue. Yay!

We finally got the PSAT scores today. She did really well in English but her Math was pretty bad. I do think she can bring it up. I just need to get her in a prep class.

Prom dress and shoes acquired today! We had ordered a dress based on what she tried on last weekend, but it came and is a no-go. So today DD and I were home alone with no plans and I set up an efficient route of mall stores and bridal shops to try. First store (Dillard's), first dress tried on was the winner. Totally different from what we thought we were looking for. I saw a girl carrying it back from the dressing room and hang it up. It was the only one of that style and it fit. It's super comfortable and not strapless, so she won't be adjusting it all the time. We were so pleased to have found one so quickly and that we could devote the rest of the day to finding the shoes. That took longer and we almost gave up but found some at JC Penney that are comfy and cute and can be used with lots of other outfits.

So the other dress is being returned on Monday. The dress we got today was $170 cheaper too! Now she can't wait to wear it and it is not till April...

Her shoes are flats and the dress just grazes the floor. She can't decide if she wants it that way (and hold it up a bit when walking outside), or if she'll want Grandma to take about an inch off. I don't know what to think about that.

Hi everyone! My oldest will graduate in 2017. Is that what this thread is?

Yes...Welcome! It's a way for us parents to cope with all the Junior year getting ready to apply to colleges stress!

DD went prom dress shopping last night, but didn't buy anything. She found a few she liked though. She's all registered for the March SAT and the April ACT. She's working through the test review books now. Once we get the scores back, we'll decided if she needs a prep class or not. I really don't want to pay for a $600 class, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to. I really wish you could wait to see your scores before you chose to send them (for free) to your colleges!

We'll be doing an admissions visit & tour at JMU next Monday. I contacted the JUM Nursing Department and set up an additional meeting with them. Virginia doesn't have that many university BSN programs. She's looking into Navy ROTC scholarships. If she decides to apply and gets one, she'll be able to consider out of state and private universities.

My niece registered for the March sat. She's going to take it cold. I figure none of the test prep places know what's on it now anyway. She doesn't want to take the act because the science section scares her.

My son is planning to major in Jazz Studies (hopefully in NY!!!). His dream schools don't require SATs, so he hasn't been in a hurry to register. It makes me really nervous! The other schools (in state!!!) require it, so he's got to get on the ball.

And prom makes me want to cry!!!
He just broke up with his girlfriend of almost 3 years, now he says he doesn't even want to go. Ugh!!!

Aww, hopefully he'll decide to go with friends or another date when the time comes.

ACT was this morning! I'm hoping she comes out a little better on the real thing than she did on the practices. She thought the math was easier but the science harder on the real test.

That's so sad. He should go with friends. What instrument does he play?

He plays saxophone - all four, but tenor is his favorite. He was first chair in our all-state jazz band last year. This year he won first chair in both alto and tenor in our region. State auditions are soon. It always makes me so nervous! He's even played with Marcus Anderson who plays saxophone for PRINCE! That was my favorite day ever!!!

Sounds fabulous. Good luck to him with auditions. They are always stressful.

Thanks! I hate them. And State is over an hour away. Thankfully his Dad took him last year when he did so well, so now he's good luck!!!
And I had to edit my count on the saxophones. I forgot he learned to play baritone! His Bari player was injured, so he played his horn. He had about 15 minutes to learn to play, and 30 minutes to arrange a tune with no music! They did a decent job. One of the moms posted it to YouTube. If you like "Santa Baby" you can check them out...

My daughter has ACT in April, there were no testing sites within an hour of us for this one. because the SAT was snowed out in Jan she now has SAT's two weeks in a row! Feb 27 is the Jan make up date and then she has March 5th. She just put in an application to Harvard for their summer college program, don't know if she will get accepted but its worth a shot. Its some kind of "extreme math" program and she does very well in math. Not how I would ever want to spend my summer but whatever floats your boat.

Haven't posted on this thread in a long time. DS is registered to take the ACT in April. What worked for DD was to just keep taking practice tests from The Real ACT prep book. DS is not motivated to do this, so I'm going to have to crack the whip to get him going. His school's winter ball is tonight. He's taking a girl and is getting ready as I'm typing this. The last time he went to a school dance was last year's homecoming. Due to an internet shooting threat that dance was cancelled (and was later rescheduled) when DS and his friends had arrived.

He made honor roll again this spring. I told him he wouldn't be able to get a car unless he did because we need It for the insurance discount. Teen boys are so expensive to insure!!!
