Parents of the High School Class of 2017/College 2021

Just heard from Brown about their scholarship-
"Congratulations once again on your admission to Brown University's Summer Program.

In recognition of your outstanding academic achievement and potential for success in our program, we are pleased to offer you a Dean's Scholarship. Your award letter is attached in PDF form."

OMG so excited because that is about 60-70% of the cost! Now just waiting to hear from her 1st choice for the summer but unless they offer than much money she will be going to Brown!

Congratulations to your DD :). That sounds like a wonderful opportunity.

My DD will be swimming all summer, just like the previous 10 summers LOL. Oh, and working as a lifeguard when she's not swimming :).

Yes, the old scale - it was her first time and she has had no prep.
She will be taking the new one as well and also the ACT.
I was talking to a friend of mine who is the head of admissions at a University, she said they are all interested to see how the new SAT will present.

Wow, your son's scores are excellent! Good for him
My sons hasn't taken the SAT at all yet. My fingers are crossed. He refused to do any prep classes, so I imagine he will take the test 2-3 times. He did ok on the ACT but will need a couple more points to be on par with Berkeley his top school.

DS took the last of the old SAT's. His score was 2020. He was disappointed, but it sounded good to me. He didn't do any prep; he just figured he'd do it since it was the last one of that format. He also took the February ACT. I'll let him know that scores are ready.
He spends most of the summer working at a Boy Scout camp. He did it last summer and liked it so much that he wanted to do it again this year. It is paid, though the wages are pretty low. Room and board is included though. 3 meals a day, 7 days a week for 7 weeks for a teenage boy..... well that's a financial gain in and of itself not having to feed him, lol. We all really missed him when he was gone, though. I am going to be a mess when he leaves for college!

Ooops, quoted you and forgot to quote the second post with the top notch scores!

DD is going to go tour Berkley this summer - her former 5th grade teacher whom we are good friends with has a son who is a Freshman at Berkley, so she has been hearing all kinds of things about the Univ. I grew up in N. Calif. My Dad returned to school when I was 5, he went to San Jose State, his dream school was Berkley but he didn't have the math to get in, this was back in the early 70's. He's now rooting for his Granddaughter :)
We shall see, she is waffling back and forth between fuzzy warm feeling small liberal art schools and big Univ's with strong STEM. She recently toured a college in Massachusetts that I have begun to refer to as the Montesorri College due to its lack of structure and support of students making their own way and doing their own thing.

Wow, he has taken it three times already? My kid is taking it for the first time soon.
He took it early just to get a baseline on how he would do. He did not want to be in a situation where he had to take the newly designed test-didn't want to be a guinea pig for that test while they work out the errors. Plus, you can't superscore the old and the new tests. He did a few practice tests on his own to prepare.

Lots of his friends haven't taken the test yet-no biggie. We knew he would do very well and wanted him to have enough time to improve his score before the new test came out.

We've been trying to brainstorm what to do for summer income. She does NOT want to babysit again this summer. It's 11 miles to any town with jobs, so it has to be worth the drive. And they are small towns, so the opportunities are few. We had thought of having both girls work at a grocery store- if both can work it makes the drive more worthwhile, and then DD14 isn't home alone all the time. But their cousins that work there don't think they hire 14 year olds, so DD14 is probably out of luck. My sister said the McDonalds and Burger King in her town send you home if they're not busy, so you could end up with a short shift that isn't worth it. The movie theater only does 3 hour shifts. Subway might hire summer help.

What would be great is if DD could make money with art at home somehow, but that would be difficult. Plus she shouldn't sell Disney art for money, which is the bulk of her work :) I told the girls they should start a line of greeting cards because DD17 can draw and DD14 has a way with words!

Niece is signed up to be the guinea pig for the first testing of the new test. She's trying it with no prep. I hope she does well. She has a few "hooks" for admission, but high test scores would be nice.

Our Jan SAT was snowed out so the make up is Feb 27th and then the first new one is the week after that so in the matter of one week my daughter will be taking 2 SAT's! She wanted to get in one more old one before they changed it to the new one.

With gas prices so low now, even a short shift would be worth it. If she drove 22 miles a day, that would still be less than $2 in gas...

True. DH is kind of hung up about it though. When I suggested she work at the store where her cousins work he thought it was too far, even though it's only about 1-2 miles farther than the town we are usually in. I'll probably have her look into it if we don't find something else. She'd rather work at that store with her cousins than at the one in her school's town where practically everyone from middle and high school works.

What does SuperScore mean?

What does SuperScore mean?
Taking the best section from each test taken and combining for a new total of "bests". For example, my son's first SAT he scored very high on reading, third SAT he scored very high on writing and math. We combine those three scores, leaving out all the lowest scores, and get a superscore. I believe most colleges will superscore SAT's.

Does the school automatically calculate that from the scores you send?

The college board will only send the top scores from each section. Now if you take advantage of the 4 free scores when you register for the test the 1st time all sections will be sent. If you take it again only section scores higher than the 1st time will be sent.

Will super score still apply to the new format SAT?

Anyone take the new SAT yesterday? My daughter took the old one last Saturday and the new one this Saturday- she said she didn't see much difference in either one.

My DD said some of the math questions were not multiple choice. You actually had to write in an answer. She felt pretty good about the Reading sections, but she is concerned about her Math scores. She now knows there are certain things she really needs to brush up on. We didn't send the score for this test to anyone, thank goodness!
