Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

Got some great news yesterday!

The school that my daughter really liked sent her a letter yesterday saying that they reviewed her admissions file and due to her ACT score increase in October, they are now giving her automatic (merit-based) scholarships worth enough to cover full out of state tuition!

Plus, they told her that she is still eligible for the competitive scholarships that will be awarded in the Spring that if she wins, can be used towards her room and board.

So she's still got some work to do as far as applying for scholarships, but this is a HUGE relief for us to know that a school that she likes is now a very real possibility!

Just got word. I am so happy for my baby. Florida State University Chemical Engineering entering 2014. She is so happy. All she wanted.

That's wonderful!! Congrats to your DD, whose hard work is now paying off!

My DS18 has finally done his college applications, sent the SAT scores, the high school transcripts and just today got letters from 2 of his 3 colleges that he needs to send proof of Georgia residency before they will process his applications.

I would've thought they'd just process the applications and deal with residency stuff after being accepted.

At least he has a full drivers license so he can scan that in and send it off. I think the colleges will accept that although I guess he needs to double check it by looking at the websites.

In the meantime, I'll set about getting a few more certified birth certificates for him. We only have one right now.

This is all taking way too long - it's annoying me greatly and reminds me of all the hoops I had to jump through to get all the paperwork together just to renew my drivers license. Ugh.

Why do you need certified copies of birth certificates? That wouldn't prove residency...just where he was born.

DD received another acceptance letter and was admitted to the Honor's College where she plans to attend. She also had her two interviews last week for the BA/MD program. She said the first interview (with a doctor) went very well and that the doctor was somewhat laid back. That made her less nervous going into the 2nd interview later that day. However, the 2nd interview was way more formal and was quite an intense hour. It was like interviewing for med school at the ripe age of 17! It's her dream to become a doctor, so by getting in, she would have a guaranteed seat in the med school after she finishes her undergrad pre-med, which would be so nice, but we are also not trying to be too hopeful because the competition is fierce and there are only 28 spots with more than two-thirds of those spots going to students who live in rural communities. She won't find out until early April.

I haven't had time to read every post here, but I noticed some of you mentioning Honors College. My dd received her first acceptance letter yesterday. In it was a packet suggesting she apply to the Honors College. Now this is my dd's 3rd choice for college and really has no plans to go there. She is using it as last resort, but I don't think she will need it. She said she wouldn't apply for honors even if she were going.

So is honors college packages something they send to all they accept or it is a special thing? Just trying to figure out if college she wants to go through also sends her an application for Honors, if I should really encourage her to apply. Also, what happens if she applies, gets in, and then decides it's too much? Will that hurt her more in long run than just not applying and staying regular? All of this college stuff is still overwhelming me. I know I need to fill out that FFSAF (or whatever it is) form soon after first of year. I've heard it is a bugger to fill out.

The way it works for DD's chosen school is that not all college applicants automatically get an invitation to apply. The letter is generated based on the applicant's ACT scores and HS transcript/GPA. A rep from the Honor's College here told DD that if she received a letter, then she would get in because only the ones who exceed the requirements get a letter. Other students can still apply and may still get in. If DD decides before school starts that she doesn't want to be in the Honor's College, she is not bound by anything and doesn't have to take any of the classes. One class per year, and two classes either junior or senior year should not be overwhelming. The classes are small, seminar style with papers and discussions being the basis for the grade. No exams. The classes replace core required courses, so it's not like the students have to take an extra class.

Congrats to your DD, IDoDis!! Quite an accoomplishment!

Sorry to all that I haven't been here much... just nothing new to report! We're all signed up for the new student conference in June, and that's a pretty cool thing. It's a two-day event for students and parents, with lots of activities and seminars for everyone together, and the students/parents apart. We go for Sea Aggie Preview on Valentine's Day, which we've already been to twice, but this time we want to measure the dorm room and stuff -- and he'll have a chance to possibly meet other incoming Freshmen.

Other than that, I'm just waiting for the end of the year when I can hit the "submit" button on the FAFSA and get some of the finaid stuff going!

The 2 day event sounds like fun and nice for the both of you to meet other people!

DD is six for six, and it looks like a yes will be coming from number seven soon.

I am extremely happy for her, but am still hesitant because she has yet to start auditioning (these are all academic acceptances). First audition is Saturday. Here's hoping that the schools feel that her talent is as good as her academics.:thumbsup2

She applied early action to almost all of them, so she should be hearing news from the rest within the next two weeks. Then the auditioning kicks in hard and heavy.

How did the audition go? Best of luck to your DD with all of her upcoming auditions. Sounds like it's going to be a busy winter!

Good luck to all!

DD, rightfully so, called an end to college admissions. She had an early acceptance in August to a state school and applied to the one she really wanted and was accepted. However, she knew going in, that financially we weren't able to make that happen. I was going to have to apply to a few more but she looked at me and said "Mom, really, enough. We both know I'm going to Stockton. There's no need to apply to others." And she was right. Her grades are good but not enough that someone was going to hand her $20k a year.

So she applied to Stockton's Honors Program. We're waiting to hear from them. They were going to begin reviewing those apps on December 10. We will have an answer by the end of January, if not sooner.

And after all the years of worrying and stressing and freaking out, it was simple, painless and easy. And it's all behind us.

The good thing is I made her call (where helicopter mom would have done it in the past) and confirm with Stockton that since her SATs went up, she will be receiving additional scholarships monies than what they offered up in August. We're just waiting for the confirming letter.

More money is always good! :thumbsup2

Beats me. It's on the list of acceptable proof of residency items the colleges sent.

I have decided to hold off on getting another couple since I'd have to pay for them.

I'm going to wait and see if the drivers license is good enough first.

Proving lawful residency just annoys the heck out of me even if I understand the reason why. LOL

I wonder if they are trying to prove citizenship as opposed to residency. The birth certificate would prove US citizenship. Residency to get in-state tuition could be proven by stuff like, driver's license, utility bills, mortgage or lease etc. We've lived our current state for the last 15 years, but the kids weren't born here. They were born in another state. We haven't been asked for proof like this yet, so I guess it will be interesting to see what they ask for. I'm sure they'll ask for proof of residency at some point.

Was he home schooled? If not, his high school transcripts should prove his in-state residency. Seems like the colleges all have high school records as far as enrollment dates, etc. Schools are allowed to let colleges access that info as per FERPA guidellines unless you opt-out.

When we did instant decision day in August we were required to bring a copy of DD's birth certificate

I suppose that schools want proof of residency at the time of application because they may form their prospective freshmen class based on instate and out of state percentages. Some schools will favor instate applicants over out of state ones if they have already admitted a large percentage of out of state students (so if everything else is equal, they may choose a GA resident over a VA one).

My D applied to two instate publics, but only one asked for proof of residency so far.

And on a different note, DD has received two more acceptances, one with scholarship money, and has had her first audition. Things are moving along.

one of the state schools DS applied to through the Common App had several questions that I assume were to establish residency ... when we registered to vote, when we got our driver's license, where our car is registered, where we paid our property taxes, had we served jury duty ... along with the general questions. The school's application did not require near as much information. It was weird.

DS was accepted ED into the University of Pennsylvania (U of Penn)! Got the decision today......He is one happy and relieved child.....

Thanks, Everyone! We have some great kids here, don't we? It is fun to pop over to this thread during the day to see how well everyone is doing.....:cool1:
