Parents of College Class of 2018 (A.K.A., "Is this the line to the poor house?")

Dd asked about the honors college when we toured the college she is going to. She had received an invitation to apply. It said she would have more scholarships available, but when we asked the head of her department of her major, he said they had only had one student that attended the honors college. Her major takes too much of her time and its almost impossible to do honors college or play a sport. I had assumed she would play golf, but she is now not planning on playing. All I see is more money, more money!

I think her brothers are on their way to becoming professional students, so I need someone to get more scholarship money!

December is upon us. I hope everyone is hanging in there! DD received a quite honorable award this week through our public school district. It's called a "Selfless Senior" award and is given to high school seniors who volunteer in the community outside of their schools and have not been recognized at the school level for their community service. We have 14 traditional (non-charter) high schools in the district. 27 or 28 students in the district receive the award (approx 2 per high school). It's a pretty big deal here. The students will all get their photograph taken by a well-known photographer here in the city who sponsors the program. The photos will be in the newspaper and are made into a large poster collage and displayed in each high school, at the two large shopping malls, at the airport, and at the school district's administrative office complex. There will also be a large recognition ceremony in March and recognition at a school board meeting. Needless to say, I'm a vey proud mom!

I haven't had time to read every post here, but I noticed some of you mentioning Honors College. My dd received her first acceptance letter yesterday. In it was a packet suggesting she apply to the Honors College. Now this is my dd's 3rd choice for college and really has no plans to go there. She is using it as last resort, but I don't think she will need it. She said she wouldn't apply for honors even if she were going.

So is honors college packages something they send to all they accept or it is a special thing? Just trying to figure out if college she wants to go through also sends her an application for Honors, if I should really encourage her to apply. Also, what happens if she applies, gets in, and then decides it's too much? Will that hurt her more in long run than just not applying and staying regular? All of this college stuff is still overwhelming me. I know I need to fill out that FFSAF (or whatever it is) form soon after first of year. I've heard it is a bugger to fill out.

Each college defines it's Honors Program a little differently, so you will have to research the program at the particular college. In general, it's a great opportunity that the students should consider. You might want to check into the details of the Honors College at the school where your D has been accepted, just in case.

Sorry to all that I haven't been here much... just nothing new to report! We're all signed up for the new student conference in June, and that's a pretty cool thing. It's a two-day event for students and parents, with lots of activities and seminars for everyone together, and the students/parents apart. We go for Sea Aggie Preview on Valentine's Day, which we've already been to twice, but this time we want to measure the dorm room and stuff -- and he'll have a chance to possibly meet other incoming Freshmen.

Other than that, I'm just waiting for the end of the year when I can hit the "submit" button on the FAFSA and get some of the finaid stuff going!

DD is six for six, and it looks like a yes will be coming from number seven soon.

I am extremely happy for her, but am still hesitant because she has yet to start auditioning (these are all academic acceptances). First audition is Saturday. Here's hoping that the schools feel that her talent is as good as her academics.

She applied early action to almost all of them, so she should be hearing news from the rest within the next two weeks. Then the auditioning kicks in hard and heavy.

DD, rightfully so, called an end to college admissions. She had an early acceptance in August to a state school and applied to the one she really wanted and was accepted. However, she knew going in, that financially we weren't able to make that happen. I was going to have to apply to a few more but she looked at me and said "Mom, really, enough. We both know I'm going to Stockton. There's no need to apply to others." And she was right. Her grades are good but not enough that someone was going to hand her $20k a year.

So she applied to Stockton's Honors Program. We're waiting to hear from them. They were going to begin reviewing those apps on December 10. We will have an answer by the end of January, if not sooner.

And after all the years of worrying and stressing and freaking out, it was simple, painless and easy. And it's all behind us.

The good thing is I made her call (where helicopter mom would have done it in the past) and confirm with Stockton that since her SATs went up, she will be receiving additional scholarships monies than what they offered up in August. We're just waiting for the confirming letter.

we've had a few hiccups this week ... I believe they've been smoothed over ... and I hope to be finished with the application process by the end of the weekend. then we wait & see how the competitive process plays out.

I'd like to be finished. This has been quite a process. LOL

We are done, the acceptance button has been hit and we already got a letter for a scholarship for her ACT. It will almost cover her books lol. Now we just have to get the FASA done and in by February 15th and then the scholarships start coming out around then. Whew. Oh and housing commitment is coming up...she has been networking already for roomies for a quad.

BTW heard on the news this morning that Fordham sent out acceptance letters to the wrong group of people. They should have received rejection notices. Those poor kids must be devastated.

Oh my gosh..that would be awful On an upbeat...we got another letter that DD is getting more scholarship money from OU...enough to pay for books!! Thank goodness! Now she just has to fill out the freshmen scholarships when they come up!
