Parents.......do you make your child wear an undershirt???

I remember my grandma getting mad at my mother for not making us wear undershirts. So, when we went to see grandma and only when we went to see grandma, we had to endure the undershirts. Grandma wanted them worn from October 'til May-- that was her rule. My kids will sometimes wear underarmour, but that's as close as it gets.

No undershirts here.......although DD11 does wear a training bra everyday. I teach preschool, and can say that most of the kids do not wear undershirts.

I'm planning on doing the same with my kids. If they put on something that's wildly inappropriate for the temperature I'll suggest that they change or add something, but other than that, they're free to make fools of themselves.

finally another mom like me!!! i let my kids make fools of themselves, they make their own decisions, and if their cold, they can put on a sweatshirt if they feel like it. i think kids shouldnt waste a second being "forced" to do something that isnt really nessecary. they should be happy wearing 400 barrettes, a sweater, shorts and mickey crocs if they want. as long as their happy, the little weirdos, im happy.

oh yeah, weve never done undershirts. we wear one when we go to grandmas, to make us seem "normal" in little old grammys eyes.

This thread just blows my mind - I have never heard of children wearing undershirts, nor have I had my MIL ever ask or comment about it. And, no we don't live in warm weather.... it is actually sleeting as I am writing this. I don't think I have ever worn an undershirt my entire life and I'm 44 (female). I could understand it perhaps for those that live in Arctic regions, but that certainly wouldn't be the vast majority. :confused3

I'm folding laundry this morning, and as I was folding my 4yr old undershirts, I was wondering if anyone else makes their child wear an undershirt. Now when I say "makes" I do mean "makes". My 4yr old DD doesn't have a choice, she has to wear one (she doesn't argue though, she knows she has to wear it).

I also have a 9yr old DD, and I have undershirts for her, but I don't make her wear them. I figure, at this age, their available, and if she's cold, she'll wear one:)

What's your opinion on undershirts?

Frankly, I had no idea children still wore undershirts at all. I've never known of any child wearing them, much less being REQUIRED to wear them. :confused3 And I have known a lot of children and families over the years. Needless to say, my son has never worn undershirts and probably never will! My child is smart enough to know when he's cold and tell me so, and there is always an extra layer or blanket available in the car or on outings. At home, obviously, we would just go get something warmer out of his bureau. I will fully admit I'm a laissez-faire mom when it comes to this sort of thing. It's his body, and as long as he is not in any physical danger or inappropriate for public viewing due to his attire, what's the big deal?

I am all for letting children make as many decisions for themselves as is practical. At 3 years, 3 months, he is definitely capable of deciding whether he's cold or not! :yay: As for the comfort issue, I don't buy uncomfortable clothing for my son at all (his wardrobe is 99% cotton).

DS has had a large collection since he started potty training, but he doesn't wear them out of the house unless he is going out to play in the snow. They are for sleeping in, just like his dad. He wears them to bed every night, along with a pr. of knit or flannel lounge pants.

Same here - I buy the softest clothes I can find for dd. Why would anyone buy anything scratchy? :confused3

I don't think I have ever thought to have my DD's wear an undershirt. In fact I know we do not own one. Now if they wear a sweatshirt they will put on a T-shirt under it but a lot of times my DD5 will take the T-shirt off at school and shove it in her bookbag.

To each his own though.

Actually, my 17 year old son was just standing next to me wearing an undershirt. He wore a button down shirt to school today and wore one underneath.

We have a bunch floating around. My teens like to wear them under polo shirts too.

My daughter, 14, wears a cami style one a lot. She usually doesn't wear a bra - really doesn't need one (REALLY!) - but sometimes needs that extra layer under a thinner shirt. Also, she likes one if she has to change her shirt for gym.

A lot of times they'll through one under a hoodie too, if they intend to wear their hoodie as their shirt.

My stepgrandaughter's mom insists she wears onesie underwear underneath everything. Makes for a lengthy diaper changing session.;)

I know this is veering from the topic, but I let my kids pick their own clothes, too. My oldest is never cold. Her kindergarten teacher used to say that she knew it was cold if my dd was wearing a coat.

Now that they're older I miss the crazy oufits...red tights, plaid skirt, purple shirt and mismatched glitter shoes.

Also, when I previously posted about the "nerdy" kids, that was my jr high self and I guess I really meant the kids who HAD to wear them seemed like they were babied. Now as an adult, I see the point and have no judgement on those who wear them.

DH & DS wear dress shirts and ties every day, and neither one owns an undershirt.

In Florida, no one wears undershirts. Unless that is all they are wearing in the 99 degree heat.

Actually, I've found it a good idea to wear a t-shirt underneath my golf shirt when golfing in Florida (we're usually there around the 4th of July). It helps absorb most of the sweat so that my golf shirt itself stays pretty dry. I know it sounds backwards -- to wear an extra layer when it's in the 90's with ungodly humidity, but it really helps. :)

My daughter hasn't worn one since she was an infant wearing a onesie. I don't think I have ever even seen undershirts for sale in the stores we shop at for kids- I didn't think anyone wore them anymore.

I watch my grandkids every Tuesday evening so my oldest DS and DDIL can have a 'date night". I always give the grandkids their baths and get them in their PJs so they're ready for bed when their mom and dad come to pick them up. In the winter I always put undershirts on them. I just think that the soft material of the undershirts protects their skin against the sometimes scratchy material inside of the blanket sleepers. Oh, and because I always hated the tags that are inside the shirts, I always cut the labels off of the grandkids shirts. Paul, (age 4) says, "Thanks, grandma"! when I cut the labels off of his shirts!;)

Never. The closest thing would be the men's white tee-shirts that he wore as night shirts for bed.
