I remember my grandma getting mad at my mother for not making us wear undershirts. So, when we went to see grandma and only when we went to see grandma, we had to endure the undershirts. Grandma wanted them worn from October 'til May-- that was her rule. My kids will sometimes wear underarmour, but that's as close as it gets.

My child is smart enough to know when he's cold and tell me so, and there is always an extra layer or blanket available in the car or on outings. At home, obviously, we would just go get something warmer out of his bureau. I will fully admit I'm a laissez-faire mom when it comes to this sort of thing. It's his body, and as long as he is not in any physical danger or inappropriate for public viewing due to his attire, what's the big deal?
As for the comfort issue, I don't buy uncomfortable clothing for my son at all (his wardrobe is 99% cotton).
