Parents.......do you make your child wear an undershirt???

It isn't cold enough here to warrent an undershirt. (I used to have to wear them growing up in NJ and didn't mind it).
That said, DD very often wears an undershirt (a 'wife beater' type) because she likes them. She always wears one under her basketball jersey.

No, they are very hot-natured. It's all I can do to get them to wear long-sleeved shirts in the winter. I don't understand because I am ALWAYS cold but I figure if they get cold, they'll cover up.

My DD never wore an undershirt after I stopped putting onsies on her when she turned about two years old. She hated them and it just wasn't worth arguing about.

My son wears undershirts when he wears a button up shirt or when he wears a sweater-his choice.
I had to go and buy them last year because he refused to wear either one without a shirt underneath and I thought an undershirt would be more comfortable than a regular Tshirt.
(My husband wears them, too, under button up shirts).

My DD had some a couple of years ago that she would wear when it was really cold out, or she'd wear them as a pj top, but she doesn't anymore.
Now she wants a bra, asks all the time, but she doesn't need one yet. LOL

OMG - I remember when you announced you were PREGNANT WITH HER!!! We're getting OLD!!!! :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

Listen - when I started asking for a bra, I didnt need one either BUT all the other girls had one, and you could tell I (and a few other girls) did not have one on.

The ones WITH bras, made fun of the bra-less ---even though we did NOT need them!

Go get her a sports-bra-esque one. Just my 2 - cents. :)

DS5 wears undershirts with his white uniform polos for school. He doesn't wear them when not in uniform unless he is dressing up in a nice shirt/polo (which doesn't happen often). DD7 wears under-tanks under certain shirts that are slightly see but not on a daily basis. She actually likes them so sometimes she'll put one on under her uniform blouse though it isn't necessary since she wears a jumper.

Girl! I know!! :sad2: :rotfl:

I remember the same stuff happening-3rd grade Trisha Conville came in with a leopard print training bra and we allll wanted one.:lmao:
No one else has one yet in her grade, I told her we would discuss again in 3rd grade(she's in 2nd) and like you said it will be a sports bra type.

Ill tell you my opinion.... Grandma? Are you listening???

I hated undershirts! Why did I have to wear one?!?!? WHY? Every day - layer me up! I hated them!!! And an undershirt and a snow suit, just to go to school??? I only had to walk from the car to the door! It was like 50 feet!!! :confused3

IM ANTI UNDERSHIRTS!

And because of this, I dont even tell the kids to zip up. In fact the 16 year old doesnt even wear a coat. Not even a hoodie. He recently got his drivers license, and he said any sort of coat interferes with his driving - and considering it makes me nervous to begin with - go coatless, my good man, go coatless!

They dont wear hats, they dont wear gloves. I figure if theyre cold - they'll put something on. :thumbsup2

ETA - Joey (16) DOES wear undershirts.... as his only shirt. LOLOLOL!
My oldest DS13, at least wears a hoodie, so I guess I should be happy about that. Hardly any of the kids at the Jr High wear coats, and the high school is even worse. The younger two have lost so many pairs of gloves that they don't have them either. (now, they do not go out for recess, otherwise I probably would buy them more)

Slo ~ as to your original question, no we don't make any of them wear undershirts. DD5 has a few that came with the underwear we bought. (they are too small, but I digress) She loves to wear them, they are more like a cami then anything, so I will buy her more for that reason alone.

no, never.

I honestly didn't think girls did. I have noticed some boys wearing undershirts, but not girls. DD10 did start wearing a bra over a year ago and I make her wear camis under certain things.......

plus her school is VERY warm - I don't worry about her chest showing - she went to school with 2 layered short sleeved shirts today (it is 6 degrees out!). I have to make sure she is dressed very warm for outside, but have to dress her not too warm for inside - it can be a pain. I would like to dress her in turtlenecks, etc for winter, but her school is just too warm for that.

:)

The first couple of kids wore them as babies, but I didn't even have any with the youngest ones - I can't stand them! It drove my mom nuts that I didn't use them, though.

Sounds like SHE wants to be the Trisha Conville. :lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

I never even bought undershirts for my DS and DD when they were little, much less made them wear them.

Now, my DH on the other hand wears them. Sometimes white ones under his button down shirts, but most of the time he wears the same color undershirt with the same color button-down shirt. The only time he doesn't wear an undershirt is when he's wearing a printed T-shirt, or one that has words on it, or a sweatshirt.

Would one of you who MAKES your children wear undershirts please explain the importance to me? Why would a child need to wear an undershirt? It might be the same reason that my grandmother scrubbed the bark on her trees and on hands and knees, the sidewalk.

My son only wears one with a dress shirt or sweater.

DH wears long underwear under his work clothes but he has to be outside a lot on the job. He has many layers on so I have lots of laundry in the winter. :headache:

Wow, this thread really took off :teeth:
It's very interesting reading all your responses, and I've come to the conclusion, that I"m in the minority  But that's okay, because I thought I would be ::yes::

I had to wear them as a kid and hated them. My children have never worn undershirts. They often want to go to school with t-shirts on in the winter and I make them at least take a hoodie or something in their bag in case they get cold, but that's it.

Why do you make your 4 yr old wear an undershirt? Do you keep your house really cold or something?

To answer this question........
It's been so ingrained in my head from my childhood, and from all the grandmas, that little children MUST be in undershirts. It's just become a way of life, and I can't imagine not putting my 4yr old in one - I would feel like she's going to be cold w/o one :cold:

I stopped enforcing the undershirt with my 9yr old when she was old enough to care about fashion. She would get upset if the undershirt was sticking out from the bottom of her shirt, or if you could see it if the neck of her shirt was a little wider. I didn't blame her for that:sad2: I didn't want her getting teased at school.

The kids in my 4yr old's daycare don't care about those sort of things, and that's why it's easy to still have her wear them. I'm sure when she starts going to elementary school, the undershirts will stop with her too ::yes::

I used to. My Grandma would never let us out in the winter without an undershirt and I did that with my oldest. My DD9 however has refused to wear them since she was 2. I'm talking screaming fits. I decided it was not a battle I wanted to fight.

nope, my kids stoped wearing them when they got out of onsies.
