Panning for Gold in TN

We are thinking about making a stop in TN on our way down to Florida this spring. I thought some other DISer's had previously posted about panning for gold in TN. I can't seem to find those posts anywhere, so I was hoping someone could suggest the best (most fun) place for our dd's (10 and 8) to try this.

There are a couple of places in cherokee north Carolina that you can pan for gold. Also lots of different gems mines in the same area.

I know there are lots of locations in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg ... but as far as the "fun factor" goes for them ... not so much. DD and my DMom did this a couple of years ago. It was nothing to write home about. I think you may have a better experience in NC. However, it could have been the location in PF that DMom chose that was ... bland. (DD enjoyed her bag of rocks, but said she'd rather have been swimming.)
