It's a bulletin board of people posting things specific to this flu. There is a lot of information there, but I would hesitiate to spend too much time there. One might be inclined to panic, as my DH is, if one spends too much time there.

I'm curious, do the other forms of flu (Swine and Avian) die out with the warm weather like our regular flu? If they do, then this new blend may by affected by the coming warmth that may slow it down, and the southern hemisphere will have a chance to arm itself before winter is fully amped up over there. Common sense wise I would think it's a no because if it's flourishing in Mexico, which is a warmer climate, maybe weather isn't as important to the new strain. But I am hopeful. I really wish the scientists had more to tell us but I am sure they are working furiously to do just that.

The 1918 pandemic started on a military base in Kansas as a moderate febrile illness,and from March until May in spread across the US. It was given a French name, called "the grippe". It faded away in the US but during the summer, it emerged in Europe. By August it showed up in the US among a group of sailors in Boston, spread to Ft. Devins, was very serious with a mortality rate of 4%, spreading across the world.

Been watching this story develop today with interest from the UK, and there's now a suspected case over here from a BA cabin crew member returning on a flight from Mexico City to Heathrow.

Hopefully it'll turn out to be nothing, and it is from the Daily Mail who's aim is probably to spread.Nothing on BBC or more reliable sources yet on the case.

I think the incubation period is 7-14 days.

I'm going to assume since you are not here you just don't know what's going on in the states. At the moment, many American's are out of work and just scraping by or on public assistance so I think the expectation that everyone can do as you do isn't exactly fair.

I swear I was going to go back to lurking, but I had to laugh hysterically at this assumption and make a quick reply. I happen to live in Michigan, a state with one of the highest unemployment rates in the U.S. right now, I'm a professional who's been pinkslipped twice in the past few years, and my DH is on "part-time layoff", working only the first two weeks of the month ever since the new year. I'm not going to get into a "my poor are poorer than yours" argument, but I can tell you that many people in my state, both on public assistance, and the so-called "working poor", still have common sense when it comes to buying basic extras like a bag of beans or rice, raising a few vegetables (even if it's just in a container garden), and, yes, hunting. Extra scrips aren't possible, I'll agree, but most of the rest is do-able. The churches and schools here are doing a great job of helping out, as well. I'm proud of the citizens of my state, my country, and my world, and hope that this is just a temporary worry for all of them.

They are saying that NO this flu is just heating up and won't be affected by the warm weather, that's one of the things that makes it so worrisome. Whether or not that is common with the swine flu I don't know.

The incubation period is 2 to 5 days. There is more diarrhea with this flu, otherwise it is similar.
Going from level 3 to level 4: It has little meaning for the public but it has meaning for public healthcare, hospitals and businesses. They need to start looking at their pandemic flu plans and organizing the elements that they may need to put into effect.

Emphasis mine. Looks like this one will show up quicker than the normal 7-14 days for the flu.

Actually your hospital has a plan that they can put in place in a very short time, and you can believe that they are closely monitoring the situation.

I don't even know where to start right now. DH is about 90% sure my girls won't be going to school any time soon, because if we wait until it gets here it'll be too late. He has gone as far as to nearly threaten me if I try to stand in the way of his pandemic plan (no, he's never threatened me before. He's a very easygoing, reasonable person 98% of the time, and we've been married for 21 years). We've gotten into a couple of yelling matches over this idiocy. I know this sounds completely crazy to most people, but on the other hand, he is VERY well educated on the bird flu, pandemics in general, the pandemic of 1918, and how flus evolve. Truly, he absolutely is trying to protect his family. I'm not convinced that he's doing the right thing at the right time, though.

Between fear of the unknown and all this sudden change, and feeling out of control, I just don't know what the hell to think.

What sort of things would be good to stock up on? It is tornado season here so I should really have stuff anyway in case we are without power for a few days.

some foods for flu symptoms like jello, crackers, ginger ale
Tylenol, pepto,
essentials that could run out like paper products
important essentials like chocolate, movies, diet soda
What else?
