.. has anyone suffered from pancreatitis?

Need to call my doc - having left side pain for a month or more now --- usually after eating, radiates thru the left back, up the left shoulder and into my neck.
I'm on GERD Meds, had my gallbladder removed a few years ago and now this has started.

I'm sure my fatty diet doesn't help that poor pancreas.
I have been very stressed and eating horribly....
I've been drinking more diet soda than ever, unsure, why, I know that has it's own issues on the body and makes you crave things more and more...
leading to weight gain.
I'm not a huge coffee drinker, 1 iced coffee per day, fat free milk 1 sugar, not the fake sugar.
I tend to doubt that's the culprit.

Anyone suffer..
It was so bad tonight, the left side, under the rib pain, that i was going to drive myself to the ER, but it has subsided ...

I'm definitely calling the doc tomorrow, I don't particularly care for my regular doc, but i've been seeing him for years maybe I need to change to a new guy :)

I did. They never figured out why, but I do know that fatty diets can cause it. I was pregnant when mine started, so I was eating healthy and not drinking alcohol (which can also cause it). The first couple of times I got it, it was a really bad pain, similar to kidney stone pain. It went away both times after a few hours. Then after my son was born, it came back and severly. I was very, very sick in the hospital. It's nothing to mess around with.

My dog was just diagnosed with pancreatitis. The one main treatment is a low fat diet.

Yes, I have had it several times.

I just went through a 3 days bout with it 2 weeks ago. It's so terrible how it comes and goes in waves. Getting through the peeks of the attacks are tough.

It's very painful and I feel for you.

I too had my gallbladder removed. My pancrease was infected so bad I was in the ICU for 5 days before they could take my gallbladder, and then stayed in ICU for 3 days after.

My doctors told me that once you have 1 infection, you are prone to having them the rest of your life. They also said at the state my pancrease was in and having my gallbladder removed was a sure-fire method of having repeat infections.

Since having my gallbladder out, I've become fully lactose intolerant. Which is fine by me, I was slightly intolerant before, but now there's no denying it.

I have pancreatic cancer and was told that any of the 'fake' sugars can cause pancreatitis too as well as the high fats, feel better and try to eat better you will feel a lot better

Thanks. Now I am no doctor, but I have a feeling that its my diet right now. With the gallbladder gone, I know I was supposed to watch...and I don't, we'll not lately anyways!

Very odd how it goes around the side and too the back.

I have to find a good diet. I'm assuming low fat low carb?!?

Atkins won't do it I don't believe. That's high protein and bacon lol

I think chocolate triggers it along with high sugars in my food.

Great, going on a cruise in less than two weeks lol

Salads n chicken for me!!!

I was told using digestive enzymes might help.. Yes?!?

Funny thing (well not that funny, i feel for you) about your dog story is my 1yr old lab has it. Skin and bones she is. And is on enzymes with every meal.

Sorry to hear..

I'm sure fake sugars cause a lot of things. I'm a diet coke a holic

My FIL almost died from it. He was sick for a very long time. He ended up dying 13 years later of pancreatic cancer.

Weren't you complaining of similiar pain several months ago (I might be thinking of another poster)? If it was you what did the doctors say about those issues? They might be related.

Hmm nope. Had shoulder pain way back when.

Turned out to be a pulled muscle, or so they said, maybe it wasn't, cause here it is again.

What type of diet do you follow with pancreatitis?

The doctor told me less than 30 grams of fat a day. That seemed high to me and I was so terrified I'd get this again, that I went to practically zero grams a day.

That was 20 years ago and I haven't got in again (knock wood).

Okay - thanks! I'll have to do more research plus get some blood work done.. could be way off base, but I don't think so.

I'm going to lay off the soda, maybe start little bit, by drinking seltzer, etc.

No alcohol either, i'm reading, but i'm not a big drinker anyways -- maybe a beer here and there during the summer time.

Not to be TMI, but did your bowels change too? or just pain?

I'm thinking maybe going back to my GI guy instead of a regular doc.

Weight Watchers might work, otherwise, have to look up less than 30g of fat per day diets :D :D

I honestly don't remember. The first couple of times there was severe pain and vomiting. The last time when I was hospitalized, it was excruciating pain, passing out, vomiting. I truly thought I was going to die. And, boy, you should have seen them when I told them that. As soon as I said that, they all sprang into action. I had a nurse on each side of me holding my hands because I thought that may somehow "keep me here." It was truly terrifying.

I've had kidney stones and given birth and this was much worse.

I was a Hugh Chocolate fan, didn't think I'd every get away from it. I tried the South Beach diet. I had excellent results because it helps to eliminate cravings.

Yrs later I applied same for Cola, had same great results.

Today I can enjoy a "taste" of either or pass on it!

Just a side note of humor. I was born in St. Stephen NB. Canada the Chocolate capital of Canada. My Mother said she ate a LOT of chocolate while pregnant with me! Her only craving. . .

Thanks will look into that. Is it lowfat?
Im in the waiting room in the ER.

Weird that even on an empty stomach i have pain.

Wife has had several bouts with it. Each time she has been admitted to hospital, given morphine and hooked up to an IV, since you are not allowed to eat. They pull blood every day to check the levels. I cant remember what it is that they check. It can take anywhere from 3 to 5 days for those levels to come down to an acceptable level. Then they will start you back on a clear diet. In one of the cases they have thought it may have been also caused by some of her medication (metformin maybe)She is also a diabetic and has had her gall bladder removed. Non drinker and Non smoker.
And really didnt think we ate a high fat diet either. :confused3
