I'm going to be painting and wanted some opinions. I've used Sherwin-Williams paint for years. Never been disappointed coverage etc have been fine.

Consumer Reports just rated house paint and Sherwin-Williams rates at the bottom. Wondering if I should switch brands but it's hard to change habits.

Behr from Home Depot is the top rated and it is much cheaper than Sherwin-Williams. I don't buy paint unless it is on sale so the price difference isn't huge but it is there.

Any insight from painters? Anyone use both brands and like one over the other and why?

The guy who has painted rooms in our house does it for a living and he will ONLY paint with Benjamin Moore. (They call it Benny..)

We have used Behr for all of our painting in recent years and have been VERY happy with it! ::yes::

We use Richard's, I've been real happy with it. If you're painting indoors be sure to use the eggshell texture - cleans so easy.:thumbsup2

There will be lots of opinions on the different brands of paint with lots of different opinions as well. So waht the heck, I will jump in too.

Behr is the ONLY paint on the market that does not have clay in it, making for a nice even finish. Always use a primer that you ask the paint clerk to tint the same color that the finish paint is tinted. This will make your job so much easier and faster too.

Go up to the store and get a BUNCH of paint sample cards with the colors that you think you like. If there is a color that you REALLY like, take a couple extra of that color sample. Go home and tape the samples to the walls. Look at the sample on the wall in the morning light, the afternoon light and then the evening light to see what that color will look like in your house, as the lighting in your home is not the same as the lighting at the Home Depot will be.

I am a big fan of Behr.

Sherwin Williams offers a "kickback" if you will to Professional painters. So that is why the painter will push it hard to his customers.
Glidden paint is garbage-nuff said. You will have to use twice as much paint to paint your room using this.
No comment on Benjamin Moore or Dutch Boy.
America's Finest from Lowes is chalky in my opinion and uneven coverage is common.

(And any paint that can be bought at WalMart or Kmart/Sears is going to be cheap paint-----you get what you pay for)

I have tinted primer before, last time I just put some of the paint in the primer and stirred it in worked fine. I'd told my sis that it helps especially with deep colors and she had 2 paint clerks at Walmart tell her it couldn't be done. They finally did do it for her when she insisted.

Walmart brand is rated #2 by Consumer reports.

I really like Ralph Lauren paint. But I don't usually pick by the brand, I look for a color I like & Ralph Lauren usually has what I want.

The clerks will occasionally say that the primer doesn't need to be tinted. They are just lazy. Insist on having it tinted, and there is no additional charge for that either (in case someone tells you differently in and effort to change your mind)
If you add the already mixed paint to the primer, the color will be lighter than if you had it tinted at the store. The color will be closer to the real paint color by having the primer tinted, especially with a dark color.

Sorry, but I think WalMart paint is no comparision to Behr.

We only use Benjamin Moore. I tried Behr in one room and it took THREE coats to get it to look good. Behr is like water when you pour it out, Benjamin Moore is nice and thick and covers in one coat. I don't care who says what about Behr, I think that is the worst paint on the market.

wal marts color place is made by sherwin williams,, they are the biggest buyer of sw paint now,, and its the exact same paint as a 100

i'm former pro painter, and hgave used colorplace/kilz paints for years with no problems and a lot of happy customers based on hte much lower price. i also like valspar its always been better than sherwin williams in my book, but when price is an issue, we will go with the lesser paint and btw,, no sherwin williams does not give discounts to contractors any longer. we now pay same price or more based on hte account we use as the customer. some store owners will still discount to contractors off thier mark up, but as a whole they do not.

As someone that buys well over 200 gallons of Behr paint a year, I think you may have gotten a faulty gallon. The paint should have a consistancy that is slightly thinner than cake batter (and with no lumps!)
In all the years that I have purchased Behr, I have never gotten one that is thin like what you described.

Our pro-painter friend likes Benjamin Moore. Looks great in the house!

We've done a lot of painting lately and the two brands we have used are Behr and Glidden. Hands down Behr is it for us, it went on nicer and just seems to be a better paint in my opinion.

I used Behr in my first house - loved the finish and it wore well.

I used Sherwin-Williams in my second home - loved the finish and it wore very well.

I used Frazee in my current home - like the finish, and it's wearing well.

So I guess I'm not really helping, am I? :) I really think how your paint holds ups depends on how much abuse it gets. My kids are always putting their dirty hands all over the walls, and each paint brand I've used has been easy to clean, with no rub-off. I use the satin or low luster finish on my walls, except for the kitchen and baths. I think flat or eggshell looks the best, but it doesn't hold up well when you wash it.

Wow, I think you may have gotten a bad batch of paint. We've used Behr many times and never had a watery paint problem. I was able to paint my kitchen dark red using only 2 coats of paint with Behr (dark reds on stark white walls tend to take several coats).

My neighbor used Benjamin Moore in her home. It looks nice, but honestly, I can't see any difference in quality between the stuff I've used in my home (Frazee) or hers. I know Pottery Barn uses Benjamin Moore paint, and that might be one the reasons it's so popular. I've taken Benjamin Moore paint chips and had it color matched to Behr paint, since that brand is less expensive. I guess it's just personal preference.

Benjamin Moore? Here we have Kelly Moore. I wonder if they are the same :confused3. The painter doing all the painting at our new house uses Kelly Moore.

I had a painter reccomend Muralo to me years ago and I have not had anything behr or benjamin moore hold up near as well
