I am booked for this for my December trip (thanks, Kathy) I am wondering about my camera. I would hate to not have my NEW Canon D60. My camera strap is long enough to comfortably cross body it and still be able to shoot. Should I just leave my 70-300 lens on it? Would the smaller one 18-150 (I think) be OK? I love my long lens for the part on the savannah. I have a photo vest with big pockets. Could I wear that to have both with me?

What do you think?

Kim

You will have a vest to wear that they give you. They want you to attach your camera to this small string in the pockets. I didn't want to take my DSLR on the trek.

There was a gentleman that wore his DSLR but they strongly urged him to leave the other lens in the locker.

If I was to do it again I might take the camera but found my small camera worked for what I needed it to do. I had visions of the camera falling off as I walked the rope bridge.

Kathy, does the vest pocket have enough room for a point-and-shoot camera?

I did the Trek in April of this year. I used a Nikon Coolpix P7000 with the strap. My friend used her DLSR. At that time, as long as the camera had a strap it did not have to be secured to the vest.

It must have changed then. I would still have second thoughts about taking my DSLR on the trek.

We did the Trek in February, and I took my Nikon D5000 with an 18-250mm lens on it. I used my regular camera neck strap and felt secure with my camera. I wouldn't feel comfortable changing lenses or bringing a second lens on the Trek. The multi-pocket vest probably won't help you, because their vest is the outer layer - the safety harness clips are on the vest, and there's no way to wear a jacket or vest of your own outside it. Since their vest is securely fastened all over any vest or jacket you're wearing, you won't have access to your own pockets and their vest has fairly small pockets. Small point and shoot cameras will fit, but a DSLR lens probably would not.

Unfortunately, on our tour it rained fairly hard much of the time we were on the walking portion. I didn't realize that my raincoat would be completely covered by their vest, so I wasn't able to protect my camera with my raincoat at all. One man on our tour brought two DSLRs (yes, TWO) so he could use two different lenses the whole time. He brought plastic bags to cover each camera, and they allowed him to bring the bags attached to his vest (to make sure they didn't end up at the bottom of an animal area). I was lucky that my camera dried off and suffered no damage from the rain, but if I get to go on the Trek again, I will definitely be bringing a bag to cover my camera in the event of any rain in the forecast.

Yes there is enough room in the vest pocket for a point and shoot.
Thanks, Kathy!

Thanks for the suggestion about the plastic bag! That would never have occurred to me!

What time of day did you guys go? Were the animals active?

The plastic bag never occurred to me either - that's why I was panicked about my camera. :scared1:

We went at 8 or 8:30 am and we had fairly good luck with most of the animals. I don't think the lions were moving around much, but we saw a lot of other animals and the vehicle (for the vehicle portion) stops in a lot of places for an extended viewing/photo taking time. :)

I always carry a ziploc bag when I am out with the camera. I use the gallon size bags.

I did the Trek in June and took my Nikon D90 with me. As long as it is on a strap that can go around your neck, there is no problem with taking it. I used an 18-270 zoom lens and found that it worked well. You definately don't want to be switching lenses. I felt perfectly secure with my camera, even going over the bridges. You don't need to rush while crossing and our guides even encouraged us to stop on the bridges and take as many pictures as we wanted from there. Since you are going during a "dry" month hopefully rain won't be an issue for you. Have fun on the Trek. I got some wonderful pictures, some even better than our guides got! We were fortunate enough to have the lion awake and while we were some distance from him, I got some great shots because of my lens length.

The main reason I wanted the bigger lens is when we ate on the savannah. I love taking close ups of the animals. Once we are moved to the vehicles. I presume we will not be wearing the Disney vest at this point. Am I right?

I believe so - I think the rain soaked vests came off just before we got into the jeeps, and the meal is definitely after that.

I also carry one of those rubber wristbands( promoting a cause). It's a great way to keep the bag around the lens.

I have gotten some great shots of the animals from the safari so close ups weren't a priority but I can see where that would be important.

Just don't forget to put the camera down from time to time and enjoy the experience.

We did the Trek in September and used a Canon G12. It was fine with a neck strap, no need for a clip.

I also had a Kodak flip video, which they attached to a clip using the wrist strap.

I know a Photopass cd is included in this package. Is it possible to add photos from the remainder of my trip to this cd?

They ship the photo cd to you directly, so you cannot add pictures. The first one we received was blank, so I had to call and have them resend it. They do take great pictures during the entire tour though.

That's really good to know. Thanks! :thumbsup2

What time of day did you do the Trek? I'm still trying to figure out what time is best.
