Packing food in checked baggage?

Is it legal to pack food in a checked baggage? I was thinking of bringing snack bars and munchies in a seprate suitcase and checking it. I have searched the TSA site and it only says to avoid it. It didn't say I couldn't. And when I looked at the list of Illegal items it wasn't on there. So do you think this would be ok? I could then use the extra suit case for souvinears when I come home.
What do you think? Have you done this before?

That is what I plan on too..cuz I bought individual cereal bowls
snack, etc, then, as you said, perfect for packing souveniers.
Here's my thought...DH and I will use one fullsize
suitcase each, for clothing, etc. then, as a third piece of
checked luggage, I will pack in a smaller "carry on" type, only the
misc food items. that way, if they do open it, it won't disrupt
my clothing, etc. this would free up our regular carry on cases,
1 each, for change of clothes, swimsuit, fragile items, like perfume
bottles. How does this sound to you guys???

I don't care if my food bag gets searched. That doesn't bother me. Now if they took some goddies that might be a problem!!! lol

I don't care if they search that bag either...but I'll tell you what..
I have been dieting for the last 10 months..and I know EXACTLY
how many mini nutterbutters I have.....
