Pacific Gas & Electric planned shutdown today

The latest round has started. Not quite as big as announced over the weekend.

In related news, one couple made a claim of a lost 500 pound block of rocks with emeralds (claimed to be worth $280 million) lost in the Camp Fire. PG&E seems to be skeptical. As much as I don’t necessarily have the greatest feelings towards PG&E these days, I would be skeptical too that someone living in a small town like Paradise would have a record sized gemstone worth a thousand times the average price of an area house, on display in their home. Reports are that the same unnamed couple filed 4 separate $4.5 million claims regarding the same home. Also some really odd claims such as a $1.3 million value for a mobile home.

With the wind we had yesterday & last night I am really surprised it didn't expand in scope (instead of reduced) or have them move it up to yesterday in my area. Luckily most of my area is not expected to lose power (this time).

That emerald claim seems more than a little suspicious. WTH keeps 280 million in gems in your HOUSE? At the very least, you'd have it in a fire proof safe. They need to be able to show they even bought such a gem. 500 carets? LOL. Me thinks they may have omitted a decimal point or two or three in there somewhere.

If someone had that type of expensive jewelry wouldn't they also have an insurance policy covering theft & loss for that expensive jewelry?

Awesome. Insurance companies suck.

Power did NOT go out!!!! :cool1: It was really windy here, so I was very surprised.

It got really windy overnight here, but PG&E didn't have any shutdowns anywhere near me. I did see some nearby areas with planned shutdowns on a map last weekend, but that didn't materialize.

Are folks starting to buy generators for their homes? This is getting out of control.
They are buying them up as fast as the stores can stock them.

They are supposed to be scaling back the power shut offs and being more selective about when/where they are doing them. So we'll see over the next year what actually happens.

In my area a lot of us already have generators because it does snow from time to time. A lot of people are looking into house generators that power pretty much your entire house. Most of us out of city limits are on a well system and when the power is out, no water.

I think a lot of people don't necessarily think of "California" and "snow" outside of maybe Lake Tahoe. But yeah - PG&E has a massive service area with the largest customer base of any American electric utility, even though the majority of customers are in the Bay Area. However, that's a lot of infrastructure going to remote areas where there's a huge risk for fires and less likelihood that someone will notice as quickly. And going through a lot of forests with the possibility of starting a wildfire.
