Pacemaker ?

My mom already has a cardiac defibrillator but her regular m.d. is now telling her he thinks she needs a pacemaker. My question is can she have both a pacemaker and a defibrillator? She talked with her m.d. today and he told her what he thought was going on, of course she has no idea what he said, but the best she could understand is her atria and ventricles are not in sync. She already has so many health problems as well as heart problems and still smoking 2 packs of cigs a day.
