Looks like my wide angle 2.8 and fisheye (thanks to Groucho's great pics) will need to be on my wish list a bit longer.

Well....this might be a silly question for you photo guru's and one I never thought of, nor had a problem with, when I got my D-80.

Background:
I wanted a pocket compact digital camera to schlep around town since there have been shots I missed by not having a camera with me, candid home shots of the labs and imprompto family pics. Also wanted the option (for travel) for my worst nightmare...having my DSLR stolen.(:headache: )

Rather than taking my D-80 gear everywhere, I've been looking for a decent pocket size that's more flexibe/creative and with the ability to shoot P, M, S, A with optical VR...etc. Found and received yesterday a Nikon Coolpix S710, apparently newly released, uses my existing sd cards & nikon software and $100. discount.:goodvibes

Question:

I started to set up the camera. I personally hate the date/time imprinted on pictures.
Can someone tell me why I would need to set date/time upon start up?? Why is this done? Can I bypass this step??

Thanks in advance!!:flower3:

date and time are included in the exif data, and can be used to sort photos based on that info, I highly recommend setting it

I agree, you should set it. If it is showing on every shot, that is an option and can be turned off. I have the S210 and it does not do that automatically, but I think it is possible to do it.

:lmao: Thanks and keep looking forward, you'll get a fisheye one of these days. :)

Like the other said, I'm sure it's something you can configure in the camera. As for why... it's definitely for those stuck in the film days when you needed to do that in order to have any idea of when the photo was taken. Certainly unnecessary in the digital era - even if you did want it on a print, something like IrfanView can easily add the text after the fact. Even without exif data, you can just look at the timestamp of the original picture to see when it was taken.

I'm surprised that any digital camera would have it on by default... that would drive me bonkers.

ALL.........
Thanks for the comments/answers to my question.;)
I'll give it a shot and set it later today.
