Annie, my standard poodle injured her shoulder almost a month ago. She had a bout of severe gastritis as a result of the Prevacox. (Cox 2 inhibitor) and went from 64 pounds to 53 pounds. She is so sad and depressed. She is not eating much despite the boiled chicken, boiled hamburger and rice, doggie Tagament. She doesn't like yogurt. She went to the hospital tonight for her shoulder surgery tomorrow. Please wish her a speedy recovery. I took her food with her. Hopefully they will have gotton a couple of bites in tonight. My wish is that she feels better following the surgery and is 'Annie' again.

Sending good thoughts to your Annie for a successful surgery. :wizard:

Hope she's feeling much better soon!

Prayers and Pixie dust for Annie. :grouphug: :grouphug: I hope she is doing better real soon.

Hoping your baby Annie is doing better real soon! :wizard: :wizard: :grouphug: :grouphug:

Here's hoping Annie gets well soon. Poodles are plucky fighters. I'm sure she'll be back to her own self after she heals. paw:

Thanks everyone. She is 9 and a half but she was like a puppy until this happened. She looks so sad. I am hoping that when she is out of pain she will feel like eating. I even took her to my BIL's cookout to cheer her up. They don't particularly like her but it made her happy just to be out with people. She sat in the grass on Monday and just smiled. DH and I have been carrying her to the car to take her for rides to cheer her up and get her to eat. She eats less than Chelsea, my 5 pound toy who can't see.

Hope you doggy is feeling better soon. :wizard:

Do they have her on Carafate (sucralfate) before she takes her Previcox? It's known as the 'ulcer bandaid' and is used in people with stomach ulcers/IBD/Chrones' disease. Maybe another NSAID would be better? My German Shepherd could take Deramaxx, but not Rimadyl. Any of them would give him a bleeding ulcer, but Deramaxx did actually provide some relief for him before it upset his stomach.
You can also get lactobacillus in tablet/capsule form. It doesn't have to be in the yogurt. Tagamet also seems to help dogs with sensitivity to NSAIDS.

You know, she did quite well on the Duramax when she hurt herself 2 years ago. I am hoping the surgery resolves it because I will be so scared to try her on another thing. There is an animal rehab. facility with a physical therapist, hydrotherapy and underwater treadmill. I am going to ask if that would be useful post op.

Lucky you to have a rehab facility like that nearby!
Seriously, ask your vet about Sucralfate (generic: carafate). If he/she doesn't carry it, you can get a script and fill it at your family pharmacy. We used tons of it in vet school, but some of the older DVM's may not be as familiar with it.

The Dr. just called. Annie's surgery was cancelled. He is very concerned about the effect that the pre op medication had on her and the fact that she has lost so much weight in such a short time with no improvement in her appetite. He is doing an ultrasound of her abdomen today and is evaluating her for cancer. I am so heartbroken. I just want my Annie back.

Oh, Dawn, I am so sorry to hear this. I know how hard it is to see a furbaby not doing well.

Sending more pixie dust and prayers for Annie and lots of hugs for you. :wizard:  :grouphug: :grouphug:

I hope everything turns out okay and you get to take Annie home soon. Did he rule out pancreatitis? My friend's Standard had it and lost a lot of weight before it was finally diagnosed (a bit of a effort to treat at first but quite managable). Good luck and I hope you recieve good news from the vet.
