Is this the final chapter?
Probably.
I never know for sure until I'm done typing.
But I know there won't be any pictures this chapter.
Crap.
I am not busting the trip home into two different chapters. Well, I hope I don't have to, we'll see.
Ok, let's get started.
(Sigh)
Remember the Beast?
Doesn't matter if you do or not, he remembers us.
And he's still not done with us!
Wednsday morning arrived and we were playing it by ear for a change,, no set time to leave, we got up, finished packing and then called for the hellbop,,, bellhop,,the guy that takes your stuff down.
They said he'd be up in about 15 minutes, so even though it was a bit too soon, I told Smidgy I'm going to get the car and bring it around front.
I wanted a few minutes I guess to walk through the lobby again, and just look around, which I did.
I couldn't believe how many different display there were to look at, artifacts under glass, pictures, murals, sculptors,
tapestries,,,,I've been here for 6 nights,, why haven't I looked at this stuff before?
I started to mist up, and I was going to go and look at the pool one more time,,, but I knew that would be a bad idea, so I walked through the "Lobby of Darkness" one more time and made it without hurting myself.
The old Santa Fe hadn't been touched in a few days now,, hmm, more than a few, but it started right up. Oh, and how quiet it is,, it sounds just like when we left the house!
Took a good look at the tires, especially the front right one that likes to "hiss", but all seems well there.
I pulled around to the front.
We ended up pulling out around 8 o'clock.
Funny thing, ok, not funny, strange.
For the very first morning out of the 15 we have stayed here, it is completely overcast,,, not a sign of blue anywhere.
A lot of you may look at this as a good omen, being that
we are leaving right before crappy weather is setting in,,,
um,,, no,,, we look at it as "we are leaving just as
crappy weather is setting in."
We've had our fill of that shi,,, stuff, when driving.
The hard part was having to head back into deeper Disney territory to the Hess station to fill up, then we reversed and headed on out using the Western Way route to 429 that takes you to the Florida Turnpike.
Strange thing though on the Western Way bypass, you will be driving for ten minutes,,,, nothing Disney- like will look familiar and finally you get to a road that I believe says
Bear Stearns Road,,and not far after that,,, the huge Disney sign saying "Come Back Soon!"
I guess this is still a part of Disney? Maybe it's just where they placed their sign, it didn't have to be on property, I guess. But it has a bad effect on you, you had already thought you were off property miles ago, and on your way home, but now there's Mickey saying "Come Back Soon!"
It's brutal.
We are rolling along pretty much in silence, but my mind is firing, and not blanks.
Not much at all went right this trip,, and when we get back and it's all straightened out, I'm all for turning right around and heading on back here.
This was the trip that was going to make right the frigid Nov/Dec trip where my back went out when the nasty pool cleaner guy cursed me, and well, that didn't work out that way.
I knew this was probably the last thing she wanted to talk about now, but my brain would not be denied.
I also had a feeling that once we hit the interstate she would give me the, " would you mind if I tried to take a nap?" routine,,,, so I couldn't put it off, my head would explode if we didn't talk at least a little about it.
We considered a trip only 6 weeks from now in November, or maybe if she can't get off of work a February trip at the latest, that was the best I could come up with, and it would have to do, for now.
It wasn't until we got back that we finally found out that our son told his son they were going to Disney around next August, as you have heard.
Well, we never did hit bad weather, might have out run it but being late September, and the late hour that we left the resort,,, we only made it,,,, once again,,,, as far as,,,,,
Murfreesboro again, that night.
We had driven down 13 times before, and Murfreesboro was just something you passed through.
Now we can't stay away from it.
Yep, we pulled right back into the Knight's Inn that we stayed at on the way down. (gee, I think it was the Knight's Inn)
Didn't get the Pakistani guy behind the counter this time, got a girl instead,, and we also didn't have to spend the extra two bucks over the coupon price to get a king bed, she had a room with two doubles.
Staying here almost made things worse for me,,,, "Wait, two weeks ago we were heading south, not north!"
You have to understand, I really, really really want to live in Florida, but,,,,,,,who knows if that will happen.
That night in the room we played Gin Rummy, or maybe it was just Gin, I don't know, but after some early arguments on the rules we got into it,,, and I made an incredible comeback at the end where we each had half the deck of cards spread out in front of us.
What we had for dinner that night I have no clue in the slightest, gee, I hope it wasn't liver sausage again, that stuff should have been thrown out by now!
______________________________________________
Thursday morning
We are up around six, but it's still dark out and I don't want to leave until dawn. Did I ever tell you the true definition of dawn? Never mind, just kidding.
Smidgy puts the weather channel on while we are getting dressed,,,,of course she did, and they are talking about heavy fog in the Nashville area up ahead.
Great, wonderful!
It's barely six o'clock, only been awake for 15 minutes and I almost lost it permanently!
I started laughing and I was afraid I wouldn't be able to stop.
That's something we haven't had to deal with yet this trip,
all that's missing now is locusts!
The biggest problem on the way down was not being able to see, and now, "here we go again?"
I pulled the car around to the lobby and we went in for coffee, tea, and these tasteless little plain donuts in this huge plastic cannister.
And they had a tv on in there tuned to the news, which is also talking about the fog.
Only now it's gotten sinister, lot's of wrecks on highways 24, (ours), and route 65, (considering).
As Diane is starting the hand wringing already, I went and stood outside as it was starting to get light out.
No sign of fog at all here, Nashville is about 35 miles away, how bad could it be? And the sky looks pretty clear,
by the time we get there the sun should burn it off, right?
Sticking my head back inside I loudly said, "Let's go", and we went and go'ed.
She was already nervous, so with the cruise control set I started talking about how I'd like to stay at Coronado next time, we can't be constantly trying to bug our friends to give us points. Talking loosened her up, and then ten miles out of Nashville I literally had to just about slam on the brakes, all traffic ahead had stopped.
From 75 miles per hour to 0 just like that!
We then proceeded to crawl the rest of the way to the Briley Parkway which we always take now around Nashville.
Those 8 miles to get there took us over an hour!
I was going nuts; "Why?" There was just a hint of fog,
my back was already hurting and we AREN"T MOVING,,,,
spittle was forming at the corners of my mouth to add to the crazed look.
When we finally made it to the Briley Parkway, I couldn't believe more people weren't getting off there also.
so to speak
About half way around, the world disappeared.
Then it would re-appear only to disappear again.
The fog seemed to be operated by the moon, just like tides, or waves,,, that's better it kept washing over us like waves, and I say the moon because the fog totally obliterated the sun, the sun just made it "whiter", like going through the clouds in the aluminum tube of death.
Although I can't say I've felt too friggin safe in the "air conditioned coffin on wheels" lately.
But at least I can play my own CD's in my coffin.
We take the Briley Parkway because it's like our own personal highway,,, nobody is ever on it except us, and right now, that's the problem:
I would have given anything for a traffic jam up like on 24 where you can only crawl along, in this fog.
Suddenly, we'd come out of the fog, and we'd both breathe a sigh of relief only to have it wash over us one more time. Then, once again we are back on route 24, the traffic has thinned out greatly,,, and the fog is thinning out too.
We still held our breaths for awhile though.
Ten miles down the road I engage the cruise again at 75, got a lot of time to make up for, but I was happy that was over with, it's back to business as usual.
But more importantly, I wanted to keep the upbeat mood, and I started singing an old song we both use to sing in our partying boating days:
"Oh I'm on the drinking man' diet
it came from a book I was loaned,
It's really terrific and quite scientific
and i'm, half, stoned.
For breakfast some Corn Flakes and vodka
but Corn Flakes have carbohydrates,
so I don't eat those fattening Corn, Flakes
I eat, the vodka straight."
She joined in:
"So drink, drink, everyone drink
it's not as bad as we used to think,
With every manhattan
your stomach will flatten
So drink, drink, drink."
("Drinking Man's Diet", Alan Sherman, if the name sounds familiar, he did "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh")
I was still happy about getting through Nashville dent free, injury free, death free.
"Hey Honey," I said when we were done singing, " We beat him this time quickly and with no damage, the Beast has lost his power over us!"
She just gave a half smile and that was all,
meanwhile, the Beast just laughed, he had already gone ahead to southern Illinois to meet us there later, and he really wants to say howdy one more time.
Ok, sorry, this is a two parter after all, what can I say, happy Marita and Buzz?
