Also back in June 2001, my Uncle at 58 years old who ran marathons, always eat healthy & was not overweight dies of a heart attack, so I think it's unfair that these people who are overweight can keep living like this when a healthy person dies.

You had made a few valid points (though none of your business either way), but when you made the last statement it proved what an idiot you are.

Maybe karma killed him, yours probably gets all over the people you're closest to. :sad2:

I'm not going to read every post in this thread to see if something like this has already been said, but I'm going to put my two cents in for the original poster.

I work in a cardiology office and I can tell you lifestyle probably has less of an impact than you think. The number one cause of heart disease is related to family history and good or bad genes. I've had 300lb people with perfect arteries and people of normal weight and healthy lifestyles need emergency catherization. You never know, but I will tell you this. People who tend to be marathon runners and have done it for a while tend to have enlarged hearts with poor function. They wear their hearts out over time.

I'm done.

Cstraub,
Yes, most overweight and obese people do choose to be fat. Studies have shown that. Not all, but the majority. There are very few "illnesses" that cause people to be fat. That is fact. Travel to Europe sometime and view our distant relatives to see if they are fat. Very few are. Because they walk more and eat less.
Sorry, just fact.

Just spent 6 weeks this summer in Europe and saw plenty of overweight people. If I recall, I saw quite a few paintings in the Lourve of "overweight"
women and kings and they weren't recent!

I agree that a lifestyle that forces a person to eat less and excercise more does produce a skinnier person. Don't give people food and have them work their butts off they get skinny- prison and concentration camps come to mind. However in our society here in America we have fast food and are able to lead more sedentary lives. For a person who has a stronger desire to overeat and not a lot of energy the battle is hard to win in this country.

What studies? Why is the FDA working to approve the drug Acomplia for weight loss?
"The drug has generated unusual excitement because it attacks obesity and possibly other addictive behavior in a novel way -- by blocking a pleasure center in the brain. People on the drug eat less."

You may want to read further and get educated on what obesity really is here... Weight-Loss Drug Closer to Winning Approval in Europe

another article

one more! must read

Notice the article is from Europe where all the skinny people are according to you. Have a great day and I hope you never choose to be overweight! :sad2:

All I can say is, every time I see M. Eisner post and his title is 'Earning My Ears' I have to laugh. :teeth:

Keep it civil, folks. I'm not going to close the thread (*yet*) because sometimes debate leads to better understanding. However, let's refrain from personal attacks, shall we?

And if you can't say something even remotely profound, please do us all a favor and hit the Back button. Even better, if you see a thread title such as this one, that you KNOW is going to be 'negative' or upsetting to you, DON'T OPEN IT! Once you open it and read it, you have agreed to being subjected to something you may not like. Don't blame the poster for upsetting you...you have the choice not to open it and you have the choice not to reply once you have opened it. :thumbsup2

OP, I hope your next trip to WDW is better. Obviously you are a very observant young person from all your posts since that last trip - you wonder about lots of things.

If your post is to garner attention, like a troll, you got it! Your fellow Dis'er's, just like me, have been trying to enlighten you....

If you are seriously saying that these observations about overweight people and overeating confuse you and make you angry, then you need a broader, more mature perspective, lots of education and a good dose of manners. Come back and tell us what you think on this topic in a few years.

Also, it seems that you are still very mad that your uncle passed. I am sorry for that loss. Eliminating all the larger people in the world will never bring him back. Just as your comments and conclusions are overly simplistic and child like, so is your outrage that you had someone taken from you who "seemed" so healthy, and if only.....:sad1:

Not being sarcastic or anything, but I would REALLY like to see these studies that show most or the majority of people choose to be fat.

And while there may only be a few illnesses that cause people to be fat,Depression effects 1,000's+++++ people every year and can cause dramatic weight gain just from the meds. You also need to consider weight gained because of injuries.

I realize some people may flame me for this & I am not posting this to start trouble, I am posting this because it has been on my mind. When I was at WDW last month my family & I saw a lot of what we call overweight people using an ECV. I do realize there are some people that really need it because they can not walk, so I understand that part. What I have a problem is seeing these people at a buffet like the Golden Coral stuffing themselves with Fried Chicken, Pizza, bread dipped in oil, Meat Loaf, Ice Cream & etc. So my family & I said no wonder these people we were so overweight, it's because they eat so much which makes them to tired to walk.
Hey, when did WDW get a Golden Corral???

Its only until the end of the 50th Celebration.

Then they'll take off the "gold leaf" and it will return to its original name,

"Turkey Legs, Churros and Fried Lard."

Sorry but I have have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome) which causes excessive weight gain in the stomach among a host of other lovely issues. This syndrome often goes undiagnosed in millions of women who don't know it exists. This has nothing to do with food, it doesn't help but sometimes and more often then people think, being overwieght is not something some people can control or our illneses make it very difficult to lose weight such as my case. Thank goodness I didn't have the infertility, but I have many of the the other issues.

I did not take the time to read all the posts on this thread but wanted to add my 2 cents.

Without a doubt, there are lazy people out there who are going to abuse privileges designated for individuals who actually need them. However, I do not feel that it is your or anyone else's responsibilty to identify them. Disney is a happy place, try to concentrate on having fun!

I believe in karma.

If you make fun of someone, it will come back to you. I hope that you don't have to know what it is like to be overweight, because it isn't fun. You have no idea WHY someone is overweight.

A family friend broke her back and was not able to exercise the same way she did previously. She did gain weight. However, looking at her, you couldn't tell what was wrong with her.

A cousin has to take steriods. He has gained a lot of weight due to that.

My great uncle was always skinny. That is, until he was diagnosed with cancer. The medications he was on caused him to balloon. He wasn't eating much at all, but still gained weight.

Then their are people that do just like to eat. I love eating salads, but I am still overweight. I exercise, but losing the weight takes a while. However, when I am at WDW I don't think about it. I eat the great food that is available and still exercise when I get back to my resort. So, you may see me eating ice cream and a cookie, but I could care less. You don't know what is going on in my life.

(oh, I don't use an ECV, but if I wanted to and paid for it, then I have every right to).

You should stop and examine yourself, because I am sure that you are far from perfect.

Since I can pretty much imagine what the previous posts will be like, I am not taking the time to read them all. Just going to hop in with my perspective.
There are many reasons someone could be overweight....it is NOT all about overeating. I'm sure there are some overweight people using the ECVs that are heavy due to overeating. However, there are also plenty of folks in the ECVs that are skinny, more obviously challenged, and not so obviously challenged.
I am trying to not take offense to this type of post, but come on....it might be time to spend less time watching what others are eating and how they get around the parks. I have also lost friends, family members who seemed healthy...but I don't take it out on those who are overweight and using ECVs to get around. If they wish to overeat, it's up to them. I don't think they are intentionally eating a ton of food without understanding the repercussions. They get it!! My way of thinking?....There but for the grace of God go I!!!

I tend to be on the pooh side. I do weight watchers and have lost 80
pounds. The way I figure it, the more I walk, the more I can eat at WDW!

The biggest problem I see with folks using the ECV's that don't medically
need them, is that they might not be available for the folks who really do
need them.

For the record this post was not about trying to :stir:, you may not believe that but it's the truth. It's something I had on my mind & wanted to get it off my chest.
I say you got it off your chest to the wrong people. Some people are heavy for many different reasons, not just because they over eat. We find our time better spent in Disney just enjoying the magic. That's why we are there. Not to judge other people for the way they are or why they are using an ECV.

To the OP, they're your feelings, rational or not, you've got to deal with them. However, when you post them here, be prepared to take the heat from those who aren't like-minded.

Think everyone realizes (especially those who need to lose the pounds) that being overweight can be a detriment and health risk. I do not feel they should skip enjoying life, whether they need to take things slower or use a wc.

Youngest DS developed a rather rare disease after a suffering a foot fracture during practice for a football team. Currently, 2 years later, still restricted as to how far he can walk & hopefully avoiding surgery. He had to use a wc for WDW trip in 12/06 & we experienced the negative issues of using one...not all fun & games! Especially, the rude remarks from folks when he'd get out of his chair @ an attraction along the lines of: "...there's nothing wrong with you...". Couple comments came from very overweight adults in electric carts.:confused3

Leave them folks alone. Let's celebrate the new restriction as to smaller strollers in the parks...can't count how many times we've been run over w/a very large stroller (hooray - for the end of the cow-catchers).;)

I am posting this because it has been on my mind

Some things are better kept in our minds, and not on our lips - or fingers, so to speak.
