Overweight people using ECV's

Oh.

I was me.

Sorry.

In the Washington Post recently, there was an article about how some people are so lazy that they will rent ECV's at malls rather than walk around. These are not all obese people, and not all people with disabilities - they interviewed a woman who said when she went to Mall of America, she just didn't want to walk all around it, so she rented a scooter.
My uncle has disabilities and needs a scooter if he is going to walk for more than 5 or 10 minutes. Yes, he is obese, but he is also inujured. My aunt, onthe other hand, is just lazy, and has no physical problems other than being fat. She borrows his back-up scooter on an almost daily basis simply b/c she is too lazy to walk.
So, as much as we want to think *all* people in scooters cannot help it, there are exceptions to that rule, and the exceptions are what sour a lot of people to the scooter users. I am not defending what the OP said about people eating junk and making themselves fat or whatever it was he said, but having actually witness the "dark side of scooter abuse" I do know it exisits. I don't make judgements about the strangers I see using scooters, but I do think very poorly of my aunt and that lazy woman at Mall of America, as I am sure most legitimate scooter users would.

I'm almost sure THAT post wasn't me this time.

Stop posting this minute, or I'll turn this computer right around and we just won't have any ice cream!

Shush!

Hah! I was right, wasn't me.

oops

Yes there are many fat people who just use the ECV to get around because they are lazy. A friend of mine works at a large "mart" store and often comments on obese people walking in (not limping) and asking to use the complimentary EVC. That certainly doesn't mean everyone using an EVC is lazy. But nearly everyone I see using one, whether it's Disney or somewhere else, is overweight or obese.

To OP:
You really need to mind your own business. It is obvious from the tone of your post that you have some prejudice against overweight people. I think possibly you may be well served to concentrate on improving your use of grammar and spelling instead of spending time wondering how people who look physically different from you got to be that way.

There are adults and children that visit WDW everyday that have terrible illnesses such as cancer. When you see a person who lost their hair to chemo do you sit around and wonder what they must have done to themselves to get cancer? :furious:

I'll get around to passing judgment on the faults of others and to telling them the 'right way' to live their lives the minute I get my life completely on track, which is to say, never.

OP, plain and simple, In my world you are just pickin a fight. Period. none of these nice people need to defend themselves to your skinny butt nor anyone else. We all have issues of some sort MENTAL (some people actually have a phobia of larger people :scared: or are prejudiced against them .... HMMM....), physical, sexual, whatever and unless you are incarcerated in the prison I work in...I DON'T CARE. Let it go.

What makes you thinking being lazy and overeating aren't disablities? Some have to really struggle to supress their appetite and get motivated. Some people struggle with depression and syptoms that are not ackowleged as physical.
Do you think people choose to be "fat and lazy"? They may be working much harder just to get through the day than a skinny person who eats all they want and are a size 2 and have so much energy they can't sit down.
People need to wake up and stop judging. Some things about us our out of our control. Even our energy levels differ which is NOT a choice.

Talking to myself here people...

Stop this post.

Work with me.

No more posts.

I'm counting to three...

Let's move one. We all know there are fat people who abuse the system and there are people with a disability who need the scooter. There are obese people who pig out at the buffet and there are healthy people who eat too much. It may be hard to see these overwieght and obese people ruin their lives, but its their life if they want to be fat. So let's move on and discuss helpful issues.

This is just my opinion here but maybe your energy would be better served worrying about stuff that concerns you. I have someone in my family who uses an ECV who is what you and your family may call overweight. Their disabililty may not be overly obvious to you and you know what...that's just fine with us. We don't really worry about wether or not you can tell what the disability is, we worry about wehter or not she will see tomorrow. Has it ever occured to you that some disabilites and the meds to treat them cause unbelievable amounts of weight gain? No, more than likely not and that's okay. That means you are lucky enough not to understand the ravages illness can wreak on the human body. Be grateful for that.

Interesting thoughts-- mine originally as well (I am overweight, but I eat well, run marathons, and am starting to lose the weight). But then I thought more about it. The thing is that it DOES affect all of us. I believe the OP is from Canada, where it would affect them even MORE then in the US. I will not say much about the Canadian system (just because I don't know all that much about it), but in the US, our healthcare system is HMO driven. The fact is, the more unhealthy people need "extra" medical care, the more the costs will go up. Those costs will be spread across everyone who pays healthcare premiums. I've heard the argument made for people with diseases like cancer, but THAT IS DIFFERENT. Cancer is not preventable. However, people who continue to make bad decisions (continually eating bad; never getting any physical exercise; doing drugs; smoking; drunk driving, etc.) on their health DO affect us. That is why you hear that obesity is having a huge impact on our health system-- because the less you take care of yourself, the more healthcare you need. And that is spread among everyone who pays premiums.

This is a *huge* problem in every country where obesity is becoming a larger problem. Unfortunately, if we want to live in a free country, we very well can't take a hamburger out of someone's mouth and stuff in some celery (nor would I want that... there would be lots of mickey bars coming out of my mouth ;) )

A good solution would be education about healthy eating, which is a bigger problem with those of low-income. Unfortunately, though, I think a huge number of people who may be contributing to this problem would NOT fall into this group, and fully understand what they are doing.

As to Canada, as I understand it, Canada has managed healthcare. I would imagine the same effect happens. If the cost of healthcare goes up, everyone would still have to pay, so that would mean higher taxes?

Cstraub,
Yes, most overweight and obese people do choose to be fat. Studies have shown that. Not all, but the majority. There are very few "illnesses" that cause people to be fat. That is fact. Travel to Europe sometime and view our distant relatives to see if they are fat. Very few are. Because they walk more and eat less.
Sorry, just fact.

Who made YOU the boss?

If we want to talk about these things we should be allowed to.

I'm just...

oh yeah

sorry.

I'm so tired of you coming on this board to start fights. It ranges across the board-starting fights about parking at the resorts, issues with restaurants, who can use the fitness centers, etc. You are 21 years old- you really should find something more productive to do with your time and gain some maturity.

Seriously?!?

Do you have so little going on in your life that you actually have the time to notice what others are eating in detail, and are still dwelling on it a month later?

I would say that is true. This poster has a history of posts like this both under his current screen name and another one he started with.

I was just thinking that I drive my car to the drug store which is only about 2 blocks away, and that's pretty darn lazy. Then again I also do 3 mile walks, and run on my treadmill a few times a week. For the life of me though, I can't understand people DEMANDING my store provide them with an ECV, snubbing our regular wheelchairs. There is no law stating you have a right to a motorized shopping experience. :rotfl:

I realize some people may flame me for this & I am not posting this to start trouble, I am posting this because it has been on my mind. When I was at WDW last month my family & I saw a lot of what we call overweight people using an ECV. I do realize there are some people that really need it because they can not walk, so I understand that part. What I have a problem is seeing these people at a buffet like the Golden Coral stuffing themselves with Fried Chicken, Pizza, bread dipped in oil, Meat Loaf, Ice Cream & etc. So my family & I said no wonder these people we were so overweight, it's because they eat so much which makes them to tired to walk. Here is another example I saw at the Food & Fun Center. We saw a family where the Mother & Grandmother who were both overweight & were in ECV's. Well they were eating Cheeseburgers with French Fries, Nacho's with Cheese, Chips & for desert Mickey Mouse Cup Cakes. Once again I say no wonder they are overweight & can't walk far. I guess I feel this way because when seeing overweight people in ECV's, stuffing themselves with junk food you don't know who has a real disability caused by an injury, because I have seen posts where people say they got dirty looks because they don't look handicaped. Also back in June 2001, my Uncle at 58 years old who ran marathons, always eat healthy & was not overweight dies of a heart attack, so I think it's unfair that these people who are overweight can keep living like this when a healthy person dies.

So if you want to all flame me go ahead, but this is how I feel.

OP, without a doubt obesity is plaguing the nation. For many obesity is not just because of overindulgence. Diseases, medication, and other underlying conditions can cause weight gain or even increased appetite. I'd be willing to bet the lazy using ECV's are in the minority.
