overlaping photos

Hi,
I've seen many Layouts were photographs are overlaped. I was wondering if you all are actually "overlaping" these photos, or are cutting them so they look like they are overlaping but part of the "underneath" picture is cut off?
Does this make sence?

Merandab4, I do this quite often and do overlap my photos. I do thos quite often to fit several pictures on a page.

I usually don't cut them .... just overlap them.
