outrageously priced garage sale items.

I am one of those people who would rather throw my stuff away than deal with the people who want to haggle over a nickel. By the time you price everything, set up, spend time at the sale, tear down and haul the remaining stuff away.... IMO it's just not worth the hassle!!

When I did do sales, my prices were firm and if a $5 item went in the dumpster because I would not take a quarter for it, then so be it. Amazingly, I usually sold the vast majority of my stuff! :rotfl2: :thumbsup2

I think having a yard sale very year is fun. Get rid of some things, make a little extra cash and I usually meet some neighbors that way. I normally only make around $100 at very most.

I do tend to price things to go.

For baby things I normally go around 1/4 of the price new, depending on the conditions. If it is like new I will go for 1/3 of the price, maybe half depending on the need.

I do have some gymbo outfits I kept instead of selling for $1 each. I don't sell on ebay, but if I wanted to I could make a lot more off them.

I am always bugged by moms to moms sale prices. They are always higher because of having the right audience. I normally skip them for that reason.

I was bummed I didn't sell the exersauser. I think I was asking too much, but they don't sell it anymore and I know many people are looking for it. It is a really cute barn themed one. It had all the piece and was in great shape. I was going to Craig's list it, but a friend is coming over who just had a baby and I am going to give it to her. I would rather give it to a friend then sell it really cheap just to move it at a sale. Of course part of me just doesn't want to part with it so I won't mark it super cheap for that reason.

I do tend to buy a lot of toys for my kids at GS and then turn around in a few years and sell them for the same or close to what I bought them for (a few $.)

This year I bought my DD a better bike for $5, then sold her old not as good one for $5. It all works out. :yay:

I went to a town sale last week and clothes were 2$. :lmao: I walked away . I am not trying to pay that much for any garge sale clothes unless it still had the tags on it and it was name brand.

True, but in that sense, garage sale buyers need to also adjust their expectations in an eBay world.

I disagree. If you want ebay priced then take the time & hassel and sell it on ebay.

There are very few things anymore that I feel are worth the hassel of ebay. It costs a lot to sell on ebay and once you take out all the fees, time answering questions, going to the post office, etc, it makes garage sale prices sound reasonable!:rotfl2:

Oh, I so agree with you on this!! It gets to be more hassle than it's worth sometimes!

I agree. I hate cheap people:mad: The one and only time I had a sale, I had a ton of like new kids boards games for ages 8+ (battleship type etc) anyways, they were priced @ 1.00 each. I was getting not takers so I put FREE on the box. One woman came and took the entire lot of them:rolleyes: then wanted to buy a 1.00 item and offered me 75 cents. I accepted and she gave me dollar. I didn't have a quarter on me so I told that and she said she would wait. :rolleyes1 WEll after abiut 15 mins she asked if I could go in the house and gert her change as she hasd to leave. I was fuming so I went in and got 24 pennies and told her I owed her a penny and she could come back later :lmao:

Never again will I have a sale, I think I made about 200 but it was so much work, not even worth it.

We do a yard sale every year - we are having ours next weekend.

The best is when someone haggles you on every little thing and then they want to pay with a $50 bill. We try not to take anything bigger then a $20.

It is alot of work, but we have alot of fun!

I don't think I will ever HAVE a yard sale. I sure do like going to them though!

I get great deals many times. Last year most of my kids' Christmas came from yard sales.

I got really nice, complete Lego sets! Several star wars and Harry Potter ones.

Another thought about the nice glider rocker---what about listing on ebay but have it "local pickup" meaning you don't ship it? We sold my granddaughter's loft bed that way. Worked very nicely.

The consignment store idea is great too; I never thought of that because I absolutely HATE the consignment stores around here. They're run by very snobby people & the kid clothes they have are, IMO, garage sale items! Pilly, pieces missing (no panties for baby dresses when you know there was supposed to be some), old-fashioned, you get the idea...

As for garage sales, my daughter likes to have them. She prices things at a cost she'd pay for similar items. Now her children are older, we don't have as many kid clothes. More are getting worn out; boys jeans for one. I just wish we were in a better area &/or the neighbors would join us.

My portion of our garage sale funds from this year will be my WDW spending money. We'll be there in 3 weeks & can't wait!

This thread made me laugh because it reminded me of the first time my older dd put some of her stuff in our sale. I told her she could keep the money for anything she sold. She was 7 at the time (two years ago) and had several pretty dresses I had gotten her at consignment sales before I realized it was a waste of money to buy her a dress she didn't pick out herself. They were very nice, girly dresses and I told her to price them herself. She came down with them all tagged, the prices were like $8.17, $5.54, $6.43. It was hilarious! :rotfl: I told her I thought her prices were a bit high for the garage sale crowd and that I usually tried to price to the nearest dollar! She ended up repricing and made about $40! I think all her sales were to kids who had their own money to spend. She has since learned to price a little lower and was helping her little sister with pricing for our last sale!

I have a similar beef with some consignment prices. I see stuff at sales priced for more than I could buy it new on clearance (Gymboree, Children's Place, etc.)! Some people are just delusional when it comes to pricing I guess!

I had a garage sale a few weeks ago, and as I was packing up, I found that I was missing many things that I knew I hadn't sold. Makes me shake my head.
My items were priced to clear them out of my house. I only brought in $90, but my highest priced item was $4.
THe hagglers really got on my nerves. Some things I wouldn't decrease the price, so I had women trying to pay the price they wanted, not the one I was insisting upon. Individuals with perfectly understandable English and an obvious wonderful understanding of my speaking, all of a sudden couldn't speak English well enough to understand "No, the price isn't changing".
Okay, I will stop venting!

Regarding the glider and the consignment store - I should have specified that I brought my glider to a consignment store that only deals with furniture. There is no clothing in the store I used. They are known for furniture and assorted household knick-knack type items (occassionally dinnerware and the like as well). This may have been why it sold so quickly - the clientelle go there specifically for furniture. I'm not sure how a glider would do in a consignment store that sold clothing.
